Oh boyohboyohboy - I have found an entire site dedicated to liszstss, but something tells me if I show it to Amy, were not gonna see her again for a very long time... :P

Btw, I'm really rather liking the Le Monde list. I suppose all lists will have entries you dont like, unless it's your own list. ;)

You are sooo right. Do NOT show me that site!

The whole purpose of other people's lists is to refine my own into shining perfection, I say.

Methinks the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge looks worthy. Shall we add a group challenge for that one?

/topic/show/...

message 406: by Saski (new)

Saski (sissah) | 420 comments Looks good, but would it be over time or all in a year? No, it can't be in a year, right?

Traveller (moontravlr) | 2761 comments Mod
No, not in a year. So, which ones, Le Monde, maybe, and Gilmore?
..and maybe NYT because thegift has read 35 of those. :D

Derek (derek_broughton) Traveller wrote: "Shall we just go nuts and post a bunch of them? "

Duh? Being at least slightly OCD (my opinion, my wife might suggest "slightly" is a major understatement), LISTZS!!! is good.

message 409: by Derek (new)

Derek (derek_broughton) I'd like to ask that anybody who adds to the LISTZS please say where they came from? What's a Rory Gilmore challenge? Radcliffe's rivals?

As for the 1001 books I must read before I die, I'm stopping at 1000. Take that, man with the scythe!

Okay, let's decide on 3. I vote for the David Bowie, Le Monde and Gilmore. Anybody second me on that?

Very clever ruse, to leave one out, BUT WHICH ONE???? :o

We might have added them in the meantime. Get an overview here: /topic/group...

Traveller's clearly making up for lost time. I added the Bowie list less than an hour before you asked this question!

I don't know, yet. I checked, but Ayn Rand wasn't on the list ;-)

I am SO evil. I just couldn't resist - would you have been able to?
*whistles innocently*
Seriously, though, it's a nicely put together list the way it's done by author. A nice resource - if you have the time - for just dipping into or for checking out what each author had written and also as a reminder of what's out there.

Maybe not. (As long as I don't have to go through the tedium of adding them all to a shelf. I still haven't fixed my 1001 shelf because I can't bear the thought of doing it over.)

message 424: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 2761 comments Mod
Yes, the shelf-adding is a bit painful if you have many challenges going, unfortunately. Unless you do it piecemeal, gradually.

message 425: by Amy (Other Amy) (new)

Amy (Other Amy) | 720 comments Mod
I tend to be worse even then that. If I am working a list (1001 or say, Bowie's list), I like to put them all on my shelves, and if I'm not going to read them I just mark them not my cup of tea. That way I have the whole list accounted for. I don't think I could do 2465.

message 426: by Yolande (new)

Yolande (sirus) | 246 comments I have to confess, I found out about "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" by Edward Gibbon while watching Gilmore Girls. It was only much later that I started reading it but the show alerted me about it's existence :p The Gilmore Girls was one of my favourite shows.

No, I don't hate myself... you on the other hand...

but really, there should be an easier way to create book lists. Looking at the API, it would be possible to create something to take a list of books and create a personal shelf, but not a listopia or group shelf.

I meant that to say that you will all hate me too. But through the hatred, you all love me because I'm the pot-stirrer.

To create a shelf from a list - that would be extremely useful yes. Suggest it to GR?
Btw, I STILL have not heard back from GR, and I had reported my problem via 3 separate channels.

Ok, listen up everybody, there have been requests to change our schedule a bit - remember that I said the schedule is not set in stone - our "forthcoming attractions" calendar was just laid out ahead of time so that we can get a rough idea.

In the meantime 3 issues have arisen:
1) People have asked that we postpone The Chimes, because they have problems getting hold of a copy. Is everybody okay with that?

2) Apparently some people have asked that we read the rest of the Area X: The Southern Reach Trilogy sooner, because they've really been liking Annihilation.
I was thinking that we can perhaps then replace The Chimes with Authority. What say you?
...and if people then still want to do the last in the Southern reach, we could try and fit that in a bit farther up the line. I'll set up a poll around this, I think.

3) A core group of us have realized that we're brave enough to want to discuss T.S. Eliot. We want to start with The Hollow Men followed later on by The Waste Land.

Since The Hollow Men is a short-ish poem, I was thinking that we could perhaps fit that in next to Authority, or somewhere around there, because soon after that we're going to become pretty busy for those more interested in the classics, with our twin-read of Hamlet the play by William Shakespeare together with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead a play by Tom Stoppard which adds commentary to Hamlet; which will be followed quite shortly by various literatures around Charles Dickens and his friend/rival Wilkie Collins.

Are you guys ready for The Hollow Men so soon?

message 432: by Derek (new)

Derek (derek_broughton) I'd be happy to do Authority. Even though I skipped the read of Annihilation, Authority is one of those books that's on my to-read list, but can't seem to make it to the top.

And I'd definitely like to do the Eliot.

message 433: by Amy (Other Amy) (new)

Amy (Other Amy) | 720 comments Mod
That sounds good to me. My copy of The Chimes is apparently on a slow boat from, well, the UK actually, and that would give it time to arrive. (Anyone in the US who is wanting to read that one may wish to start locating a copy now.) I'm ready to go on Authority and Eliot.

message 434: by Traveller (new)

Traveller (moontravlr) | 2761 comments Mod
All right, let's just get the green light from the group in general, and then, since you're rearing to go on Authority and I'm not close to ready for it, would you mind leading Authority for us as well, please Amy? I'll take care of the other discussions.

Btw, is there anybody who would like to volunteer to lead any discussions for us? A work that you love and cherish, perhaps?

Ah! White Noise! Funny, I actually made contact with it obliquely via my studies and know about a lot of the themes touched on in the novel, without having read the novel itself. I must remedy that soon...

I read an excerpt from White Noise in our American literature anthology in college, loved it, and have never gotten back to it. I am a terrible reader :) It's on my list sometime this year, assuming I actually get anything on my list done.

Derek (derek_broughton) Yeah, there was no Amazon when I read the first one. I'm not sure there was even a WWW.
