I definitely will! I am thoroughly enjoying those discussions.

Traveller wrote: "So, since you guys are also busy, how about we sit tight until February?"

That definitely sounds best to me. Still happy to set up threads for anyone who wants them of course.

Jennifer | 20 comments So, I was just kinda wondering if the group is really going to read The Book of the New Sun ?

Jennifer, you wouldn't have to invite me twice to re-read this underappreciated classic. Could we make this a November/December/January project, perhaps spread out over a book per month, or a book every 2 or 3 weeks - do you think that would work?

I would also like an excuse to reread the series, and would definitely join in. I broke it out when I got the announcement of the upcoming read, then, like Jennifer, wasn't sure if the reading schedule was still a thing.

Jennifer | 20 comments I admit I am disappointed it couldn't be read sooner. But if we could push it to October ? One book a month? I have been wanting to re-read this for a long time, when I saw that it was posted, I was so excited.
Could we make a beginning thread to make it official ?

Ookaaayy then. 😉 Sincere apologies about the false announcements, I suppose I should try to find a way to stop them. How about we compromise and make it start Friday, October 7?

Ok, you guys are on. Very busy at the moment, but I will slowly work my way towards working out the logistics and making the announcement in the next few days or so. Watch this space! 🌞

Sweet!

Also, if you want to announcements to stop, go into the group library and change all the books marked "to-read" that have dates in the future.

Cordelia (anne21) I'd be happy to read these Gene Wolfe books too. Been meaning to read them for some time now.

message 111: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 20 comments I have pulled out my copies of the books. I may have to go purchase them again...in a larger print format...ha ha ha !

Jennifer, you could always get reading glasses like I did. ;)
Whitney, I did fiddle with the to-read list, but being an optimist, I left all the books that I would still hope us to read - but maybe I should just set them all at the farthest-away date as possible for now - as in two years time.
Cordelia, yaye!

There has been a lot of criticism against The Book of the New Sun cycle of books, (I read them long ago and loved them) so I would LOVE to read them in a group where we can each pose our own arguments - these books go much deeper than is obvious at the outset, and a lot has actually been written about them if you know where to look. Cryptic, I know, but I'm hoping we will all learn out of the experience, as well as motivate me to dig deeper as I've always wanted to do regarding this cycle of books. Maybe I'm expecting too much and will come out disappointed, but somehow I have a feeling that won't be the case.

Or just set them for today or earlier. That way you can change the date when you actually have a group read planned, and people won't get mass mailings announcing upcoming reads that aren't really happening.

Looking forward to Wolfe, and glad we have a fourth!

Sorry to hear about the cataracts, Jennifer. That's a worrying thing to have... 😥

I read that they are being diagnosed earlier and earlier and that many people are getting surgery done much sooner, rather than waiting. I have had them for some years. My doctor has told me every year. He is of the mind that you want to to as less surgery to your eyes as you can so only when necessary, so far glasses have been the solution. This maybe the year. Its going to depend on how it goes as it gets darker.

message 118: by Nilanjana (new)

Nilanjana Haldar Jennifer, I am sorry to hear about your cataracts.

Please don’t worry.

If you get operated by a good wye surgeon, you should see fine in a few weeks after that!

I know from experience since I am an wye surgeon myself : )

Nilanjana Haldar Hi Traveller, I got caught up with a lot of work and couldn’t get to “Chess Story

I just resumed today.

Can I please join the discussion on it once I am done ?

message 120: by Nilanjana (new)

Nilanjana Haldar I recall that you had recommended the Chess Story long back and that there were a lot many discussions on it. Sadly I had to separate back then because of a lot of work in daily life. So.. 🙂

it just says I need to Reload and .... doesn't go anywhere for me! :(
is there any other method of getting back on track and into the discussion?. I remember the Zweig piece very well and enjoyed the follow up discussions. Thanks Traveller

Hey, guys, as you know, we discuss fiction from all over the world, but events in Africa have given some of us a desire to explore the continent via fiction and non-fiction avenues. I will therefore create a folder for "Africa". If having only one folder available proves too constricting, one could always think of creating an "Africa" group or a group that specializes in geographically focused history and literature, which would then explore various countries and regions. ..but let's start the experiment here and see how it goes, since I already have a few takers.
