If you've got a book you really want to read in 2021, but can't find a category for it, come here for help.

I've got a list of books I wanted to read in 2021, and I'm wondering if any of these fit any of my open categories:

The Elegance of the Hedgehog
The Woman Next Door
A Most Peculiar Malaysian Murder
Welcome to Lagos
The Widows of Malabar Hill
The World Without Us

Has anyone read any of these and know if they might fit in an open category I still have:
* A book with a family tree
* A book about forgetting
* A locked-room mystery
* A magical realism book
* A book set in multiple countries
* A book featuring three generations (grandparent, parent, child)
* A book about art or an artist

The Shell Collector by Anthony Doerr
Exhalation by Ted Chiang
The Farm by Joanne Ramos

I’ve read it so you could read it for a book you saw on someone’s shelf. Lisbeth goes home to see her parents and takes her children with her so could fit for features 3 generations. It’s a storyline about racism and the effects of slavery so social justice issue. Can’t think of any others.

Madeline, I'm reading Exhalation currently; I'm about halfway through. It's a collection of stories so I'm sure you can find a prompt for it easily, but off the top of my head it can fit black and white cover (at least my copy does), same title as a song (there are a couple songs on spotify with the same name), and about an art or artist, as the story i'm currently reading has a main character who is basically a graphic designer, which can be considered an art.

they definitely count for social justice.

I haven't read them, but the main character in the first are a young woman and her cousin, so it's possible that there are parents and grandparents also involved, making it three generations?

Perhaps you think your best friend would like the book?

Agreed. But I found it to be a good read. More of a character-study.

That has three generations in it. If you like audiobooks, I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook read by Lin-Manuel Miranda

The Farm fits the 'fresh starts or do-overs' prompt as most of the women who enter 'the farm' are looking to start over and create better lives for themselves.

Possibly dark academia. A couple of people have added it to the list. It’s not set in a school/college but it does have dark themes and the main characters are senior high/college age.

A book about forgetting - the MC is suffering from memory loss after a head injury.

A Book by a Blogger, Vlogger, YouTuber, or Other Online Personality - author has a blog, Instagram account, Twitter account, etc.

Features 3 generations - there is the MC, her mother and her grandfather. The interactions and history between the 3 generations are very important to the plot.

It's been years since I read the book (back in college), but I think I remember grandparents, so I think it fits the 3 generations criteria. Definitely works for social justice. It was one of my favorite books from college, I hope you enjoy!!

One edition of Nervous Conditions has a cover that looks like a torn piece of paper to me, which could be something broken.
It would fit prior year's prompts of an author in her twenties, a 2020 prompt, or a book about a family, 2019, or an author from Africa 2019.

Jenny Dahl Bakken | 34 comments I am trying to fit in «Dread nation» as I really want to read it - I already have the social justice issues covered. Does it fit any other prompt? Is a genre hybrid by any chance?

It is most definitely a genre hybrid!! it is YA historical fiction / horror / alternative history / speculative fic / steampunk-ish (there's one or two devices, not a lot of steampunk feel to it) / and maybe a few other things.

Over in the afrofuturism post, a strong argument is being made for it fitting as afrofuturism, too. I still don't see it that way, because I'm hung up on the "futurism" part of the word, but that doesn't mean I'm right :-)

message 29: by Miri (new)

Miri (miriloves2read) | 28 comments I'm planning to read the Grishaverse books next year. I'd really appreciate any suggestions for prompts that they could fit in!
Maybe you even remember a past challenge prompt that might work for one of the books.

I already read Shadow and Bone this year, so I only need suggestions for the other two books of the trilogy and the Six of Crow duology.

Thanks in advance!

message 30: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1748 comments It's been ages since I read them but I feel like the Grisha trilogy is mostly set outdoors? They are all pretty easy to find on bookstagrammers' book shelves, Leigh Bardugo is an Aries and it probably feels like everyone has read them but you. Six of Crows could work for black and white cover and some past prompts include bird on the cover and book with a map that would work.

message 31: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1223 comments okay grishaverse...
Anything by leigh bardugo always has a map
the grishaverse has been made into a series on netflix I'm not sure when it will be realeased.
In the gem, mineral, stone thread there is a debate as to whether bone counts as a mineral.
I think ruin and rising would count as mostly outdoors and in multiple countries (made up).
Crooked Kingdom would also be multiple countries.
You can use Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom for about an artist. They're con artists, the one character is a tailor.
Anyway hope this helps. I finished this series this year and used them for prompts.

Those are ATY prompts. I always get the challenges mixed up and have to double check which one I'm meant to be talking about.

It's popular enough that it could be in the "everyone's read it but me" prompt.

Edited to add: I also put it as a contender for a TBR title with a pretty cover.

There are three generations.

Protagonist is a college student so if you are a college student also, you could use it for "has same job as me" (counting "student" as "job").

It's a big stretch, but you could make an argument that it's a book about forgetting.

Maybe it seems like everyone has read it but you.

Maybe your best friend would like it.

Some past categories it could fit:
a book you chose for its cover (2015)
Clothing on the cover, if you count the dress (2019)
Noemi is in her 20s (2020)

I would really like to read Dune. Would it fit any of these promts?

- A book about do-overs or fresh starts
- A book with a family tree
- A book about forgetting
- A genre hybrid
- A book featuring three generations

Thanks in advance

That's actually really difficult to fit.

There are the "personal" categories:
author shares your zodiac sign
your best friend would like it
a place you'd like to visit
meant to read it last year
prettiest / ugliest cover

And it is a little bit about social justice, since part of the plot touches on how Europeans and Indigenous people in far eastern Russia are not treated the same way.

Fresh starts and genre hybrid are the ones that fit best to me. Paul's grandfather may be mentioned in passing, but only two generations really figure into the plot of the original Dune.

Ali | 75 comments Ariel wrote: "What prompts would work for these books?

Stay with Me
- same title as a song
- 3 generations

Clap when you land
- set in multiple countries

I haven't read the other 2, but would recommend either of these ones! There's obviously then the more personal prompts to think about eg. book your best friend would like
