This is the Pre-Read thread for the January 2021 Classics selection. This month we will be reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Is this your first time reading this book? What interests you about this autobiography?

Nike | 235 comments I'd love to - I've been wanting to read this book for so long but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I live in Sweden and I'd prefer reading it in Swedish although there's no problem for me reading it in English either. However neither is available which is so strange. The old edition in Swedish is not even available at the library any longer and I can't find it as an e-book. I'll keep trying and look for it at online second hand book shops but I haven't had any luck yet.

Natalie | 15 comments Hello Nike! I'm not sure if Amazon is available to you but I saw they have an ebook and audio version. You can get the actual book as well. I hope you're able to get ahold of it somehow!

Natalie | 15 comments I'm excited for this one! I read it once before for school and it has had a lasting impact on me. Ive been wanting to reread it and see what I take from it now that I've experienced more of the world.

Allyson | 11 comments I read this in high school over 20 years ago... I will be listening to the audiobook this go-round.

Jessica Myers (jexx) | 1 comments I’ll be reading along. I haven’t read it before and never realized I didn’t know what exactly it was about until I read the description. It sounds very sad but I’m glad to be reading a classic.

Kirsten | 1 comments This will be my first read for this group. I've never read this book before but it's been high on my list. This looks like a super busy group so I'm trying to remain focused and not get too overwhelmed. :)

Thank you for your support! =) I have now actually found it .... on the library of the University! They have plenty of copies but ... just before Christmas all the libraries including the ones at Universities were closed down totally. Earlier it was restricted, one could get in and borrow books but not hang around. Now the situation has gotten worse here so now I have to wait and see, new regulations will be presented on monday.
Otherwise I will look it up on Amazon (although I'd prefer to boycott Amazon). =)

Pe (pagevingthuit) | 3 comments I started reading last night and I'm loving it so far (have read the first 5 chapters). It's my first time reading it and I'm excited to finally tackle it as it'd been in my TBR list for a long, long while.

Skip Slone | 3 comments Hi there. I’m new to this group and this book is new to me. Maya Angelou has impressed me since the day I heard her recite her poem, “On the Pulse of the Morning, at President Clinton’s inauguration. I even had the opportunity to hear her speak in public one time when she came to Orlando, where I live. For some reason, though, her books always seemed to remain inexplicably just below the threshold of “currently reading for me. This challenge gives me an excuse to push one of her most well known books to the top. That said, I’m kind of maxed out on how many simultaneous books I can read, so as soon as I finish one, this one will be next. That should happen within a few days.

Skip Slone | 3 comments Typo correction... in my comment just now, I meant to say “speak in person, but posted “speak in public.

Tyler_zakiyareadsbooks_ | 3 comments I'm joining in for this read! I remember during secondary (high school) we did a few of her poems for our English Literature course and I remember just falling in love with her poetry. This will be my first time reading her autobiography.

I recently started the audiobook version that's read by the author. Enjoying it so far! I like her reading voice. As a bonus, this book is one of the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, a list that I'm very slowly chipping away at.
