Andrea Cox (andreacox) Ask away! A moderator will answer as promptly as we can.

Q: What about participants outside the U.S.?

A: Our international friends are welcome to join in the reading fun. Unfortunately, we do not currently have an international giveaway, so there will be no prize to win if you’re outside the United States.

Q: Five books? I read that much in a year...

A: Yep, this challenge is meant to push your boundaries a bit! You're welcome to enter and see how many you get. Everyone is welcome to participate in the discussion, even if you don't make it to your goal for the month.

Q: What's in the prize?

A: New or gently used paperbacks are the staple of the giveaway. Most of the books will be Christian fiction, since all the moderators are Christian and often read in the genre, but it will not necessarily be exclusively Christian fiction.

Q: What if I don't want to win a prize?

A: You're still welcome to participate in the goal and challenges and/or games. When you make your completion post, simply add a line that says, "Don't enter me for the drawing."

Q: What's the exact point of the customized ŷ shelf? Do we add the books when we've read them, or is it for books we're planning on reading for the challenge?

A: The customized shelf is so the moderators can check to see how many books you have completed for the challenge. Please only put on the shelf the books you finish for the challenge. Remember to select dates when prompted when you post your reviews so that the moderators may make sure the books were only read in January 2021.

Q: Do books we've already started in December count, as long as we finish them in January?

A: As long as there are at least 150 pages left to read when the challenge begins, starting a book in December (or any other month) is fine. Just note in your post how many pages you read, if you aren’t starting from the beginning.

Q: Does this challenge start in January 2021?

A: Yes. The challenge begins on January 1, 2021.

Q: When does this challenge end?

A: The challenge ends on January 31, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time.

Q: How would an audiobook figure in terms of pages? I usually listen to a couple of them a month. Would you figure from the pages in a different edition? if so, which edition?

A: If you listen to an audiobook, you may count the page number of the book with the same text the story was read from (for example, an unabridged audio would be the same as a regular edition of a hard copy, or an abridged would equal a condensed or edited version hard copy). In cases of books with many editions, if the most similar hard copy listed is over 150 pages, it may be counted for the challenge.

Q: Can I use books that I'm going to be reading for other challenges?

A: Yes, as long as it's 150 pages or more.

Q: Do nonfiction books longer than 150 pages count for this challenge?

A: Yes. Any book at least 150 pages counts. Fiction, nonfiction, audiobook (see previous question about audiobooks), etc. all count.

Q: How do you get a picture of the book to post on your challenge log?

A: Make sure you're on the desktop version of ŷ (this cannot be done via the app). Above the comment box, there should be a button that says "add book/author." Click that.

A box will pop up. At the bottom of it, click the circle beside "cover." Then, click in the search box near the top of the pop-up box you're in and type in whichever book you want. When a list pops up, select "add" next to whichever book cover you're searching for.

Q: May I increase my goal after the challenge begins?

A: Goals are set once they are originally posted. However, you may read as many additional books as you like.

Q: May I lower my goal? I won’t be able to reach it after all!

A: Unfortunately, no. Goals are set once they are originally posted. Even if you don’t reach your goal, you will have checked a few books off your reading list, so you may still feel a sense of accomplishment.

Q: Should we include the page count of each book in our updates of what we have completed?

A: Yes, please do. That makes it easier for the moderators to check at a glance that your books meet the page requirements.

Q: Do we have to review the books we read?

A: No, reviews are not required. Just let us know the page count, dates read (begin and end dates, please!), the title, and author of the books. The books should be placed on your designated shelf for the challenge.

Q: If I start a book for the challenge, don't like it, and want to DNF, can I still count it as long as I get past page 150?

A: Yes, we'll count that. 150 pages is the magic number, but you shouldn't have to keep reading beyond that for a book you truly don't enjoy.

Yes! Definitely. Just put whichever version your Bible is on your ReMo shelf, then let us know when you get finished with the 150+ pages in the Progress Reports thread. When you post the Bible for the challenge, be sure to note how many pages you read so I can make a note of that, because you may or may not get all 1000+ pages read in it in January. If you get over 150 pages done in it, I will definitely count that as a full book.

Note: This is an exception. All other books must be read in completion unless carried over from a previous month.

I love that you're diving into the best book ever! :)

Katja Labonté (oldfashionedbooklove) | 9 comments Andrea, can I switch books out after the challenge is begun or not? I chose Anna & the King of Siam, 250 pp or so, and then found out that version is an adaption and the real version is 420 pp, which I'm not sure I can do this month... Of course if I can't switch I totally understand, I just wanted to check!

I've been deciding on what books to read as I finish the previous ones rather than saying what I wanted to read before the challenge started and sticking to that, so I'm assuming you can...

message 6: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Yes! You don’t have to stick to any pre-set reading plans. I hardly ever do either, though my intentions are to do so. Read what you’re in the mood for, as long as it’s at least 150 pages. ☺️

Katja Labonté (oldfashionedbooklove) | 9 comments YAY! Thanks so much!! :D

Naomi Shores | 1 comments Where do I enter how many books I want to read in January?

message 9: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) The Set Goals thread is the sign-up. The Progress Reports is where you post the finished books. Welcome! You may backdate books to January 1, 2021.

message 10: by Lila (new)

Lila Diller | 11 comments I had a couple of nonfiction books that I started last fall that I technically finished in January. Do those count, or do they need to have been started in 2021?

message 11: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) If you read at least 150 pages in January, they certainly do count. Just note how many pages you read this month. Thanks!

message 12: by Lila (new)

Lila Diller | 11 comments Since both of them only have 200 or so pages, I'm sure that 150 of them weren't in January, so I won't count them.

message 13: by Lila (new)

Lila Diller | 11 comments I just finished an ebook that I can't find how many pages it counts as, because there is no print edition. Can I not count it?

message 14: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) What book is it?

message 15: by Lila (new)

Lila Diller | 11 comments Bookers on the Rocks by Chautona Havig
Bookers on the Rocks: Elnora Island

message 16: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Ah! I found the page count for that book on Amazon. It's 246 pages. We'll count it!

message 17: by Lila (new)

Lila Diller | 11 comments thank you!

message 18: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jennbehindthebooks) | 19 comments Quick question Andrea - Are we required to meet both the number of books goal and the number of pages goal? Example: I have read all 6 of the books I had set as my goal, but I set 1500 pages and have only read 1448. I'm pretty sure I will end up finishing another book or two this month, but wanted to double check just in case.

message 19: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Only one goal must be met, preferably the number of books read.

message 20: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jennbehindthebooks) | 19 comments Okay, thank you! I am hoping to meet the pages goal as well still, but January is flying by!

message 21: by E.F. (new)

E.F. Buckles | 60 comments I reached my goal of 5 books. Was there anything I had to do to make it official besides my post in the progress reports thread? I was looking around, but am not seeing anything specifically about that.

message 22: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Nope! That’s all you have to do. Great job!

message 23: by Ejayen (new)

Ejayen | 14 comments Do I need to post all 37 books to the progress reports? I can, but I promise they are all legitimate.

message 24: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Ejayen wrote: "Do I need to post all 37 books to the progress reports? I can, but I promise they are all legitimate."

If you want to. I also check each person's shelves. As long as the books have a finished date in January 2021 and are on your designated ReMo shelf, they count whether or not you post them to the Progress Reports thread.
