This is a place where we can share what we're reading with everyone. And it'll allow us to, hopefully, interact more with each other.

I'm currently reading The Rage of Dragons. It was a bit confusing in the beginning with all the unique terms but it's a really interesting read.

I read it last year and it was so good. How do you like it so far?

message 8: by Shawna (new)

Shawna Finnigan (sugoishawn) | 143 comments I'm currently reading The Golden Compass

I like it, but I'm surprised by how dark it is. I thought it was a children's book, but I feel like some parts of the book would give kids nightmares.

I like it so far. It's not my favorite but I am hopeful that the rest will be just as good

It's in my tbr and I was also under the impression that it was a children's book. That's one of the reasons why it's taking me so long to get to it.

I agree, it's a bit darker than usual for the targeted audience, plus the storyline can be a bit complicated, especially in the books that follow. That aside, the series is one of my favourites!

Kay (readinoctober) Since I've recently finished QoAD by Cassandra Clare, I needed to something non-fantasy, that's why I picked up To kill a Mockingbird and The girl on the Train.

message 17: by Lisa of Troy (new)

Lisa of Troy I am reading The Secret Commonwealth. It is Philip Pullman's second trilogy with Lyra and Pan, book #2. Yes, The Golden Compass was simply amazing but definitely not a child's book.

The Golden Compass does have a long ramp up, but it was written 25 years ago so it was before the internet. In Pullman's older works, he does take about 100 pages or so to really warm up.

If you are interested, the author wrote an article earlier this year:

I loved The Golden Compass and the rest of the trilogy and found La Belle Sauvage interesting, too, but I couldn't help but DNF TSC. Lots of people have said it was pretty depressing, due to Lyra and Pan's relationship. While I do plan on trying to read it again once the last installment in BOD comes out, I'd like to know what you think. Is it worth trying again?

message 20: by Lisa of Troy (new)

Lisa of Troy For as long as I have read Philip Pullman, he has been my favorite author, and I have openly said that I am his Number One Fan. That being said, it felt like a family member died after I finished reading The Secret Commonwealth. The book was extremely dark and way off brand. Honestly, I am worried about the author because these characters come out of his imagination, and it was just too much. He must be going through a bout of depression.
The book started off slow, but I am used to Pullman taking about 100-200 pages to warm up. However, it never turned the coroner. There never even was a showdown at the end of the book! I was honestly going to have to give The Secret Commonwealth one star but Philip Pullman is still a writing expert and incredible author so I would give it two stars.
I will say that not all hope is lost. There is another short story by Philip Pullman. It is called Serpentine. It is also about Lyra and Pan, but it goes a completely different route than The Secret Commonwealth (It's an alternate ending). It is magical. Personally, I am going to pretend that The Secret Commonwealth does not exist and instead read Serpentine again.

So sorry Mr. Pullman. Mad respect for you!

em (-emanfazyl-) | 6 comments Well, that's sad to hear. I was hoping it got better towards the end. Good to know I'm not the only one who was disappointed :)
