Kim | 154 comments As 2020 wasn't a good year for reading for me, I'm setting myself the absolute minimum-challenge of 12 books, one a month.

I do think setting goals in terms of number of books is not really representative, though. It doesn't account for those 1000-page monsters or the 120 page quickies, and did influence my choice of books earlier, which I don't particularly like.

That's why I will express my actual goal in a page count, and will strive to get to 6000 pages, which is actually a little more challenging.

Also, I'll try to be better at actually reviewing what I've read...

La_mariane | 181 comments Hi Kim! Those are great goals. I plan like you : I like to set a realistic number of pages/books, otherwise it's more discouraging than motivating. Happy reading year ! (And I'm not sure that last sentence is really English, but you get the idea...)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Actually reviewing what I read throughout the year is also a struggle for me, for whatever reason. I start out the year strong with every intention of keeping up with it, but by the 10th book it's like "oh well... "

Good luck with your reading goals in 2021, Kim! Happy reading.

Ilona | 4698 comments I am all for setting a realistic goal and counting pages rather than the number of books. Best of luck with your goals! :)

Kim | 154 comments Good start for reaching my goals:

The Rebellious Tide The Rebellious Tide by Eddy Boudel Tan

My rating and review: 3 of 5 stars

In short: enjoyable, but forgettable.

Pages: 312/6000 = 64 pages ahead of schedule

Kim | 154 comments Norse Mythology Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

My rating and review: 1 of 5 stars

I was very underwhelmed. I'm pleased to know a little more of the Norse myths now, but it wasn't a very enjoyable journey getting to know them.

Pages: 616/6000 = 74 pages ahead of schedule.
(maybe that can count as another 'positive' for this book: the writing style didn't lend itself to lingering... I almost speedread this to get it over with... )

Kim | 154 comments Savage Tongues Savage Tongues by Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi

My rating and review: 2 of 5 stars

Pages: 844/6000 : 174 pages behind schedule.

That was a struggle to get through... And a real let-down because I actually wanted to like this.

Time to get back into my comfort zone and read some fantasy to get back on the horse :)

Kim | 154 comments Sailing to Sarantium (The Sarantine Mosaic, #1) Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay

My rating and review: 4 of 5 stars

Pages: 1295/6000= 497 pages behind schedule.

I really, really liked this. Apparently not enough to keep up with the page-count-goal, but hey, I blame having to take my car to work instead of public transport...

Kim | 154 comments Seasons Between Us: Tales of Identities and Memories (Laksa Anthology Series #5) Seasons Between Us: Tales of Identities and Memories by Susan Forest

My rating and review: 3 of 5 stars

Pages: 1919/6000 = 349 behind schedule.

I'm catching up! I guess that's a good thing about short stories: knowing the story is almost done helps motivate to read on.

Kim | 154 comments Lord of Emperors (The Sarantine Mosaic, #2) Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay

My rating and review: 5 of 5 stars

Another great way to catch up on your reading goals: read an amazing book...

My rating and review: 4 of 5 stars

Then, as I was on holiday with such a bad internet connection that I didn't dare downloading a new book, I read a few more of the 20 Masterpieces of Fantasy Fiction:

The Epic of Gilgamesh by Anonymous
My rating and review: 2 of 5 stars
Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
My rating and review: 4 of 5 stars
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
My rating and review: 4 of 5 stars

Kim | 154 comments Kushiel's Dart (Phèdre's Trilogy, #1) Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Long, but really liked it.

Started Kushiel's Chosen but didn't finish it in 2021.

Stranded my 2021 challenge on 5647 pages read.
