I was terribly saddened when I saw a few days ago that Barry Lopez, author of Arctic Dreams, Desert Notes, and other beautiful works on nature and man's relationship to it, had passed away. I discovered his Arctic Dreams shortly before my first trip to Alaska, and it helped me to see the wilderness in a new light. His was an authentic voice that will be sorely missed.
