Fiction - Sci/Fi. Looking for a book. It was based in a desert setting, where a portion of the population were hiding (potentially underground). Some of the population had a 'soul' of translucent being in them - which some were trying to remove and discect - unsuccessfuly. You could tell who had the 'soul' by looking in their eyes.

I remeber at the end point of the book - the main character 'transulcent soul' was successfuly able to be transfered into a more suitable body.

I would say I read it around 4 years ago.

Bit of a shot in the dark because I read this 10 years ago and I'm really blurry on the details, but could it have been The Host or another book from the series?
