Don Armstrong | 2 comments Sorry- this is hard to describe in a title.

I try to not limit myself to a genre, so I use Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ to explore top rated books in different areas, because I'm not following a particular author.

Too often, when I look at a highly rated book, it is book # XX of a series dating back years, maybe even decades.

I usually either skip it and keep searching, or go back a dozen books and start with the first of that series.

Do you ever start a book in the middle of a series?

Pamela Mclaren | 293 comments I have and just continued from where I started, I also have not necessarily twisted myself into knots if I can't find the next in the series and had to skip one.

I don't think it usually matters all that much unless the book is focused on the personal story of the main character. Authors are usually pretty good filling you in with the background.

Goodness no. If it's a series, I HAVE to start at the beginning. Though, tbh, I don't prefer reading series like I used to when I was younger.

Don Armstrong | 2 comments It just seems like half the books I come across (especially crime who done it) are series. Must be a proven path of success to authors, rather than a stand alone.

Rohini Musa (goodreadscomuser_rohinimusa) I’m just the opposite! I prefer a series to a stand-alone. The stand alone would need to be exceptional for me to read it

Dee (austhokie) | 618 comments i think it depends - if i come across a book that is maybe in the middle of the series - I look to see what friends may have read it and try to find out if I can start middle of series - i.e. different characters but similar world; vs. a series where each book builds on the last
