What are you reading right now? Part 3
Finished rereading Frontier Incursion by Leonie Rogers, and about halfway through rereading Frontier Resistance. I was planning to continue to the third in that trilogy but I just noticed a new book in the series that starts with The Silver Ships by S.H. Jucha. New book is Conclave. I’m carefully not reading the description, in an attempt to not get distracted from finishing the book I’m in the midst of.

Frontlines? More like Frontpotatochips, amirite?
...ok, not my best effort. :p

LIked Leonie's series so much that I then bought the printed books as a Christmas gift for my adult science teacher daughter. Another relative read them and liked them too.
Thanks for the heads up on a new Silver Ship.

There is a companion series to it of 4 books. The series is called Pyreans, which I gave 5 stars to all four books. Eventually they intersect with the Silver Ship series, but you can read Pyreans as a stand alone set.

Silver Ship is very good, but I gave about 1/4 of those only 3 stars as in average and ok but did not impress me as extraordinary. Still over 40% of these were 5 stars for me. I think the longer the series the more hit and miss it can be, especially as readers expectations expand.
I agree - some of the books in The Silver Ships series I gave three stars to as well. I find myself rereading The Pyreans series more often, although I sometimes skip the first book as that one needs more time in between for me to forget the action.

Thanks, Lizzie, I'll keep that in mind!
I finished my marathon reread of the trilogy that starts with Frontier Incursion by Leonie Rogers.
I tried the free preview of The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers but it didn’t grab me. I liked her first two books, and never finished Record of a Spaceborn Few. I did finish To Be Taught, If Fortunate but won’t be rereading that one. I’m not sure I want to buy this newest book of hers.

I’m more than halfway through reading Conclave by S.H. Jucha, just out a few days ago and #20 in The Silver Ships series. I suspect that it’s the final book in the series. Interesting but juggles far too many different characters on different planets or ships for me to get immersed in the story.
Finished Conclave yesterday, gave it 3 stars. Yes it is the final book of that series. The author is working on a new series but no idea when the first book will be published.
Currently reading a new YA fantasy in a solid 3 star series, but the latest book in the series starting with Bob's Saucer Repair by Jerry Boyd just dropped. Name is Hoopee Do. We’ll see if I can keep from getting distracted by it, because I always enjoy books in that series.

Looking forward to reading some mysteries after this and get into A DESOLATION CALLED PEACE around my birthday at the end of May.

Started Alliance Stars, which starts off with a real bang. Total Space Opera MilSF.

I just finished it. I liked it, but did have difficulty remembering some of the characters from previous books. Considering the length of the series (24 books in total) and the amount of time from the first to the last, I am not suprised that I don't remember them all.
i liked the premises and the "lessons" in regards to "aliens" and AIs as equals, politics, greed and all the other responsies, both positive and negative. It did feel like too much was skipped over in certain parts. I actually liked the epilogue Although I would have liked to have more, it did bring the series to an "end" that felt "complete".
The opening comments by the writer indicated this is the last book in both the Silver Ships and Pyreans series. It saddens me, but I can understand the writer wanting to go on to something else. For these being Jucha's 1st two series, he did an excellent job.

For the extremely loose definition that we use in this group, it counts. He is using spaceships to get to the planets right? I don’t recall that particular book but I do recall various stories about him. The Man who Counts comes to mind (unless my decades old memory has it mixed up), where a shipwreck strands everyone and most of them get separated. A linguist in the group learns a local language quickly but doesn’t have anything to say to them. Van Rijn elsewhere does a lot of pointing and ends up with just a few words but actually gets things to happen.

Finished Hoopee Do by Jerry Boyd. Those who enjoy the series that starts with Bob's Saucer Repair will enjoy this one too. This series is one of my comfort reads.
Read a new fantasy after that, and now I’m working through my pile of free previews looking for one that can hold my attention.

Bracken, you can go to Reader Discussions and post a new topic, or ask me to do so for you.

I didn’t find any free previews that held my attention enough. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir came close but not $15 worth. Maybe in a few months when I can borrow the ebook from the public library system.
So now I’m rereading The Scent of Metal by Sabrina Chase. That was one of our group reads a while back. It has the advantage of me not feeling guilty if I do find something else interesting and switch, but also if I don’t it starts a series so I can just binge reread the series.

Same. Plus, I really loathe the tired ”woke up without a memory trope.
Finished rereading The Scent of Metal by Sabrina Chase, and decided to binge the series. Already finished One Blood and currently rereading the third Soul Code. I assume that eventually there will be a fourth book.
Finished Soul Code yesterday. Haven’t found and free previews that hold my interest so I’m rereading a fantasy series.
I finished rereading that fantasy series, and now have a book hangover.... sigh.... it will pass eventually. There are some interesting books due out in the next few weeks though.

I recently finished Mutineer, the first of Mike Shepherd's Kris Longknife series, which had been on my Maybe list for years. I don't know why it took me so long to try it, but I'm glad I finally did. It was a little bit unbelievable (she's a boot ensign for Maude's sake), but still exciting and a fun read. I'll definitely try the next one. After The Pride of Chanur and some nonfiction I've got started.

I read a couple of Kris Longknife books over the years. I have been trying to collect the series in used form so I can continue in order. It reminds me a bit of Elizabeth Moon's Vatta series.

I almost always read more than one book at a time. It does sometimes have the effect of appearing as if I read 5 books in one week, but they all go at different speeds.
For instance, it took me nearly a month to read Mike Nichols: A Life because I kept stopping to watch the movies referenced, and I keep Jade War in the car to read when I take my wife to her various doctor appointments, so I’m only getting a chapter or two per week.

B.V. Larson - Star Runner
Martha Well - Fugitive Telemetry
Lindsay Buroker - Planet Killer
Mike Resnick - The Fortress in Orion
C. Robert Cargill - Sea of Rust. I need to re listen to the last third of it, because I completely blanked on the end.
I lost my notes. So, probably 20 more I have lost track of what book or which sub series
I’ve been reading a lot of fantasy lately but now I’m back in space opera with the newest book in the series that starts with Bob's Saucer Repair by Jerry Boyd. Title is Take Me Home.
Next in line after it is Astray by Jenny Schwartz.

Take Me Home by Jerry Boyd was good. Fans of the Bob's Saucer Repair series will enjoy it.
I’m about 30% into Astray by Jenny Schwartz. It’s readable but not as much fun as Space Deputy was and my attention keeps wandering to other things. That could just be me of course, because it bounces between two storylines and that makes it harder for me to get fully engaged. I am hoping that it gets more interesting soon.

Currently rereading Space Rodeo by Jenny Schwartz, which was nominated for a July group read. I started rereading just the first chapter so I could determine whether it would work as a standalone (yes), and got sucked in.

Also reading Extinction Series by James D. Prescott. The first one was only average to me, but book 2 had me hooked. Discovery of alien spacecraft, changes to the genome, and past extinction events being aliens resettling our planet each time. It is listed as hard science fiction and technothriller, so not space opera.
