Vote for August BOTM CLOSED
And don't forget to make any changes to your TBR list before June 25. That will be the day we announce next TBR and no changes after that.
I have only read 16, including one from the excluded books. There are 5 currently sitting on my TBR shelf:
- Hawksmoor (Ackroyd)
- Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Adams)
- Fables (Aesop)
- The Commandant (Anderson)
- The Bells of Basel (Aragon)
Maybe it's time for some lighter reading, perhaps some Douglas Adams would be welcomed.

I could get behind Dirk Gently's HDA. I haven't read that yet. I've read 27 counting the excluded but I have a whole bunch of these on my shelf waiting to be read.

The selection this month is actually pretty good for options for me: 13 unread!
The ones I'm most interested in are ones I can get on audio which are:
-Hawksmoor
-Bosnian Chronicle
-The Green Man
-The Old Devils
-The Man with the Golden Arm
but could also easily go for:
-Fado Alexandrino
-The Bells of Basel
-The Green Hat
-The Bridge on the Drina
-Ashes and Diamonds
-Broad and Alien is the World
-Tent of Miracles
-Cause for Alarm

Fado Alexandrino
The Information
Novel with Cocaine
Cause for Alarm
Broad and Alien Is the World
I own Cause for Alarm, Fado Alexandrino, Broad and Alien, and the Information, so I would be most likely to vote for them. I am not sure I can obtain Novel with Cocaine.

But if Dirk Gently gets chosen I'll probably join in. I read that as a teenager, and couldn't make sense of the ending. Definitely time to try again. I'd actually like to read all of Douglas Adams work again. He has the ability to be absurd and hilarious simultaneously with thoroughly grim hopelessness, and that's maybe something that's needed now.

I have read 13 of these, so as usual relatively open. I just read The Green Man by Amis and would rather not read another of his right now.
Agree with Patrick’s idea to go “light for August

I am going to vote for Of Love and Shadows since it's on my bookshelf and I keep eyeballing it.

Thanks for all the thoughts, prayers. Husband has now moved to a rehab unit, long term care facility near home. Less drive time. No city traffic. He has a long way to go to get home. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

I have read 8 of the books on this list.
I am most interested in reading Blood and Guts in High School, Of Love and Shadows, Tent of Miracles, I'm Not Scared or Fado Alexandrino. It's been about 15 years since I last read the Hitchhiker's Guide so I would read this if it wins.
(I kind of want Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon to be picked so I can re-read it. I keep re-reading old favourites rather than reading new books!)

I'm glad to hear that because I couldn't either, and I was late middle-aged :)
I've read 12 of these, about my usual quarter.
I happen to have three of these in my next twenty of my to-read list! They are: The Bridge on the Drina, White Tiger, and The Twilight Years. I have some others of these farther down my list, the next being The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul.
Jamie mentioned Gabriela Clove and Cinnamon, and I would like to read that- I just bought a yard sale copy for $1 US.

Yes George, Don't know how I missed putting than in the header but will do so now. Winner announced on 24. TBR announced the 25.

Fado Alexandrino looks good but no library availability for me, at least at present, and a little pricey to buy online ($13-20 US, when there are so many other books I want to read that I don't have to pay that much for; maybe I could get by interlibrary loan though).
My thoughts as ever are with you and your family Kristel xxx
Just one excluded from the randomiser this time and that is:
The White Tiger

The White Tiger

I wondered why it was excluded- Is it because it has been a BOTM twice before? Is that the current rule on randomizer exclusion?

Yes something like that I think

I really don't know what to vote for- have already read some of other readers' choices. So will vote for Bridge on the Drina since I already have it and want to read it soon, but I have no expectation that it will "win".

I really feel like something light and definitely prefer NOT to read a book about men behaving badly (Money ; A suicide Note). I suppose we shouldn't be voting against things, but I could really stand to read something amusing or uplifting right now. ;-)
The winner for August BOTM is Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and the randomizer chose Deep Rivers by José MarÃa Arguedas.
It was a tight race between Dirk and Drina for awhile but Dirk was the winner for a light read in August. Others that got votes; I, Robot, Things Fall Apart, White Tiger, Fado, Love and Shadows.
I haven't read either books for August. I have Dirk on the shelf but not sure if Deep Rivers is available. What will you be reading?

Cool cool, they are both available to me (cause for alarm is also on open library for anyone else considering), and Cause for Alarm is also on Diane's list of 5. So I'm thinking I'll put in for a buddy read of that one if you're down :)
As main agitator for Dirk Gently, I'll definitely read this one. I'll skip Deep Rivers, as it is unavailable for me. I could probably join the buddy read for Cause for Alarm if it goes up. Otherwise, I'll keep ploughing my TBR shelf.

My libraries don't have Deep River available but (in the US) I see that Amazon has used copies for about $6 US with free shipping and betterworldbooks.com has 2 copies @ $7.50 US in English. The Spanish language copies are more readily available. So I'm thinking of getting it.

I can use "Portugal" for my World Challenge in the "Around the World in 80 Books" group.

I thought about doing a buddy read for Fado, but learned that my copy of the book is in Portuguese! I am trying to get an English language copy.

George and Amanda (and anyone else), are you still interested in doing a buddy read in August for this? If so, I will go ahead and start reading it, as it will take me a little longer to get through.

I've already started it, am at just 15% now (75 pages of 500). I'll be reading it fast enough to finish by the July 29th due date I hope; they only gave me 15 days on the ILL loan (but possibly they'll give an extension if I request it). Mine's translated by Rabassa and pub'd by Grove Press. The font is smallish but reasonable for me (w/ my "readers").

Yeah I can fit it in if you want to do it Diane.
I do need some volunteers to moderate our BOTM if anyone is interested otherwise I will continue to do it.

I am starting to post now and probably will finish up tomorrow. My husband had a second brain surgery for cancer and GammaTile Placements on 5/13/21 but had a major set back on Saturday and is back in the hospital in the cities so I have been driving back and forth.
How are books chosen? One book is by popular vote and one will be selected by randomizer. Book under 600 pages and not a previous BOTM in past two years are included. Everyone gets a free vote but you can use participation points up to 5 total votes including your freebie. Please feel free to try and persuade people to vote on books you really want to read.
Send a PM to the Reading 1001 shelf personality or to me of your choice(s) and don't forget to vote!

That's it for August. Which ones would you like to read, see directions above. Let us know, maybe someone will also want to read it too. The more votes the more likely it will get to be our BOTM in August.
