Mormegil | 3 comments I have all (or most) of the paperback series that starts with Swords and Deviltry. But I was wondering. Is it better to start with that first book and go or look up the publishing order and read it that way?

I started it years ago and maybe finished the first book. But I don’t want to read Fafhrd’s origin story first. I feel like I need the context for the character.

The Joy of Erudition | 138 comments I started in publication order with "Two Sought Adventure" aka "Jewels in the Forest", and loved it. I continued that way until the one that introduced the thieves' guild, because the version in the Swords books included additions that started tying things into an alternate continuity, so I decided to stop there and start reading from the Swords order. However, I think the older stories were better, and I wish I'd just continued reading the original magazine versions in publication order, so that's what I'd suggest.

Steve Dilks | 26 comments I agree with The Joy of Erudition. The magazine publication order is the way to go. The early stories are the undoubtedly the best; classic Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, particularly those published in UNKNOWN. The book that contains the strangest and most overall satisfying of their adventures is SWORDS AGAINST DEATH.
