I'm intrigued by Challenge # 9
Working on the parings, and hoping to use some books on my shelf.

I looked at #9 and #11 and thought those will be difficult, but I now find myself looking at a book and wondering if I can make a pairing of it based on something else in the pile!

I think Challenge #9 is one that might come up naturally as one reads. Same with the Bingo square about music. I have a feeling that as I read connections will appear that I had not anticipated when I first picked up a book. How many times do we read a novel and then go on to investigate some aspect of it in a non fiction source? It happens quite a lot to me. I also suspect some book will have a music connection that I had not realized until I was actually reading it.

I've got only a couple of days left to reconsider my Old & New challenge. I have never completed this challenge, so I'm really wanting to choose books that I have a good chance to read, and not just a real challenge for me to read.

message 21: by Lori (new)

Lori Keeton | 1451 comments Looks great, Katy! My Brilliant Friend is a favorite of mine. I also would love to read Anna Karenina. Isn't it supposed to be one of the best novels ever written? I hope you enjoy your challenge! I didn't finish the old and new last year either but think I chose better like you said. Have fun!

message 22: by Angie (new)

Angie | 496 comments Lincoln is am amazing book. Hope you enjoy it.

I have also never finished the Old and New Challenge. I still haven't made my final choices.

You ended up with some fantastic choices, Katy. I didn't finish the Old & New this year, so I was very careful in choosing my entries there this year. I will also be reading My Brilliant Friend. I'm hoping I like it enough to do the whole series. Will be interested in seeing what you think of it.

It is time to start reading for the New Year - dinner preparations are started and now to choose my first book to start in 2022. I do have some I didn't finish in 2021 that I am still reading, but a new book is called for today.

First two books entered - so nice to have blank spaces everywhere so that they can contribute to several challenges.

I've started filling in blanks; the nice thing about challenges in January is that there are always blanks to fill.

message 27: by Lori (new)

Lori Keeton | 1451 comments Looks like great choices, Katy! I am also planning to read Testament of Youth thanks to member Jillian who loves it so much. I want to read the Poldark series but didn’t think about adding them to my challenges. They do fit nicely though! Have you started them yet?

And I saw Hawaii by Michener s as md I have that planned too.

LOL. Too often I get to December and still have those blanks staring at me, Katy. Off to a nice start.

I finished the first three books in the Poldark series. They are perfect winter reading.

And I do need to read more Michener. His books that I have read so far have been really great reads for me.

Well, yes... Seems there are always plenty of blanks left in December. I don't think I completed any challenges last year.

I also really liked Ross Poldark and read the first three books in quick succession. I may have to return to that series soon. My Libby/Overdrive library only had the first three ebooks.

I really liked your 1959 list. I thought A Canticle for Leibowitz and My Side of the Mountain/On the Far Side of the Mountain were both excellent.

I was in the same boat with many empty blanks last December. The only thing I finished was short stories, which gave me enough new authors.

I'm just happy that I decided to try a small challenge (only 6 books) and that there are always plenty of authors new to me to read.

I always fail that one too. And yet I keep filling it with books that I want to have read but are never in the mood to actually read! So silly and overly optimistic of me.

Well done on the new authors! Great start!
