Terry | 2254 comments How about September?

message 102: by Carolien (new)

Carolien (carolien_s) | 888 comments I trust Sara's opinion, so if we can do Cry of Angels towards September I'd be interested. I just first need to complete moving house.

September is perfect for me.

message 104: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5327 comments September for Sailor Song is okay with me too.

Sara (phantomswife) | 9011 comments Mod
I'll add Sailor Song to the schedule.

Let me know if you guys agree on September for Cry of Angels.

message 106: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2254 comments I am pretty flexible on A Cry of Angels and could even push it into October.

message 107: by Sue (last edited Jun 19, 2022 10:37AM) (new)

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3676 comments I'd love to do a Cry of Angels buddy read but what about November since we have The last of the Awakening Land in Sept (The Town) and Jile's Lighthouse Island in October? I like to keep open for group reads also. If it needs to be September or October I'll still try and do it if I can fit it in between group reads and The Town.

message 108: by Sue (last edited Jun 19, 2022 10:40AM) (new)

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3676 comments Sara, Can we put Lighthouse Island on the schedule for October? I forgot to put it here. We talked about it in the Stormy Weather thread. You, me, Savita and possibly Connie were interested so far.

message 109: by Sam (new)

Sam | 994 comments I am in for Cry of Angels.

Yes , I will be joining in for The Fields in mid August and Lighthouse Island in October .

message 111: by Terris (new)

Terris | 4220 comments I like Cry of Angels for November.

message 112: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2254 comments Okay, I would be fine with A Cry of Angels in November, if that is what works best for everyone. It will be a busy month for me, but I should have a couple of long airplane rides at the very least.

message 113: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2254 comments Sara, can you list out a schedule for the various Buddy Reads so we can keep track?

message 114: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9011 comments Mod
Terry, there is a schedule thread HERE

I set up the discussion threads shortly before the discussions begin.

message 115: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2254 comments Thanks, Sara. It looks like a great second half of the year!

message 116: by Sue (new)

message 117: by Sam (new)

Sam | 994 comments I am curious if there is any interest in a buddy read of Rachel Carson's National Book Award-winning The Sea Around Us? I was going to nominate Silent Spring in the regular nominations but wanted to read this first and thought it might make a good buddy read.

Yes, oh yes. Silent Spring hasn't done well in the polls, so I'd read it for a buddy read also.

I am pretty open. Later July/August - or if you are thinking long term, fall if fine too.

The Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil anyone interested?

The 1700+ pages include material published posthumously: drafts, reworked chapters, parts previously excluded sticking to the 'official' edition (authorised by the author) might be a valid option, if the page count seems daunting.

I read one book at a time, so one month (November? Musil was born 6 Nov 1880) should be enough. In case someone joins in, we could perhaps think of a three-month period (Oct-Dec)?

Thank you for reading!

Yes, I've wanted to read this. But I am a bit tied up trying to finish some of the group challenges. Oct-Dec might work for me. And I'm a slow reader.

I would be interested if we got a few more members to participate. I have not read Musil but am encouraged since Audible has released this unabridged edition with a narration by John Telfer. I find my interest in these longer philosophical texts is more steadfast when I have two senses assimilating the material so I read and listen at the same time.

Darren (dazburns) | 2116 comments I have a copy of Vol.1, so might be tempted to join,

Mark me down for Jan-Mar. In fact, at this point, I've mustered up sufficient enthusiasm that that will be my Long Read for 2023 (I've made a habit of tackling a 1000+ pager per year for the last several years), barring some sort of grand mal disaster (or at least one that hasn't gotten tedious over the years).

Jan-Mar would be ideal for me, because I have the group BINGO and Challenge Buffet to complete this year. But I start anew at the beginning of the year.

And TMWQ is in my Personal Challenge list. So it would be great to have the support to tackle that. I am also interested in the study guide:

Thank you for the link, Klowey; I'm interested as well. Perhaps we could gather material on the run up to our buddy read. Yesterday, I downloaded The Critical Response to Robert Musil's the Man Without Qualities (free online).

NOTE: In my previous post I'm keeping a list of potential buddy-readers.

Wonderful. Thank you.

I've read books from the period, like The World of Yesterday and studied a bit about the Weimar Republic and central Europe between the wars. Do you think a recommended reading list of other books would enhance our understanding?

I know that The Magic Mountain is an upcoming group Monthly read. My current reading list for the year is tight, but if we plan to read TMWQ I might try to squeeze in The Magic Mountain beforehand.

That's a great idea, Klowey! I wonder whether it might be possible to set up a dedicated thread for that purpose. Like yourself, I will also use these months for some related or contemporary reads.

I'd say that books like The Magic Mountain (1924) and Zeno's Conscience (1923) in both, the story ends with the beginning of WWI, the excitement of psychoanalysis in the air could motivate and enhance the reading.

You can have a page/thread for a buddy read book. This is the uberpage for that. I'm not sure if you can create the new topic or if Sara will have to do it.

I'd love a list of books our buddies recommend. I would be up for Zeno's Conscience as well, but to read next year with TMWQ. I was also wondering about books by Joseph Roth.

Any one of you can set up a buddy read thread when you know what you want or tell me what you need and I will be happy to set it up for you. I'd just ask that you coordinate so that there is only one thread and not duplicates. I'll be happy to add it to the buddy read schedule when you guys have ironed out a time frame. Sounds interesting and so ambitious!

The Man Without Qualities Thank you, Sara! So far it's four-five of us, and Jan-Mar the chosen time period let's confirm that. Perhaps I'll set up a thread in a few days time, where we can post notes about related books (fiction and nonfiction), a "recommended reading list of other books [that] would enhance our understanding", as Klowey suggested. Thank you!

Oops, I forgot to include the link to the main page for buddy reads. And you can create a topic off of that, which would be the main page for our buddy read, TMWQ.

Ah yes, bringing in The Magic Mountain. This was a good push to get me to finally read it. I've wanted to for a while. I like that the group inspires "getting moving." :-)

«I'm so glad I didn't die on the various occasions I have earnestly wished I might, for I would have missed a lot of lovely weather.»

Anyone interested in Elizabeth von Arnim (1866-1941)?

Between August and September, I'll be reading most of her novels, starting now with Vera (1921).
