Deadline in Athens is an intricate and entertaining noir mystery set in 1990s Athens. Petros Markaris has created a not altogether likeable homicide detective in Inspector Costas Haritos. He is grumpy, not always inclined to take orders, often fights with his wife, but he is inclined to reason, clearly loves his daughter and spends free time reading dictionaries.

While my first suspect turned out to be correct, Markaris had successfully diverted me away from it that I had a "go figure" moment.
