Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Well, seeing as I can't stop buying books anymore, I really should think of a better title! I am pretty much going to stick with last year, the slight change is 10 themed months, 1 wild card and 1 reading free books (which slightly goes against my theme, but hey ho, need to tackle those thousands of books, I lost the ability to stop getting free books this year too!). Another difference is that I'm going to fix a couple of the months, I know that June/July are my best reading months, so will do the series challenge then as they are doorstops. And Dec will prob be free books.

Pam Baddeley | 3328 comments Wow I'm impressed! Couldn't possibly be that organised Desley!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Thanks - I have no idea how I'd be able to pick what to read from hundreds of books otherwise! This is quite relaxed structure actually

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments First book of the year read, an enjoyable read. So looking forward to book 2, I only held back so I could tell the hairdresser tomorrow that I'm reading it!

I just sort of dip into things. And sometimes read something I've only just got as I'm interested to tackle it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments I finished my second book The Shadow Sister this has been my favourite of the series, I was so impressed with both the strong, independent animal loving women from the past, and the quirky bookshop that allowed you to sit in front of a fire, reading and being given coffee from the current time, I could just read it all over again. 5*

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments 3rd book finished White Nights, really motoring this month. A 3.5* read

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments 3 books finished since my last update, 2 were yesterday to make it a clean end to the month! So 6 in total this month, with 2,671 pages - if I can keep that up, I'll smash both my book and page targets! February is Male Authors, between my 12+4, PIFM and Standalone authors, I have 4 target books, although colour challenge is tricky this month. Also going to pick something like James Patterson for my bathroom book, so that makes 5. Do have holidays that need using by the end of March, so could use some of that as reading time. My eye condition has decided to flare up in my 'good' eye, fortunately not affecting my vision much, so will have some apps that I might be able to get some reading done.

message 26: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3328 comments Well done Desley. I suppose you are reading books from the charity shop? Otherwise the Kindles are handy with their ability to make the print bigger when anyone has eye issues.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments No, I only read one paperback last month, I have made the font on my kindle a bit bigger than I normally have it, although I just have slightly blurry vision at present

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Another book finished, Home: Myron Bolitar Series, Book 11 - quite enjoyed it, the first Harlen Coben book I read was a Myron Bolitar book and didn't enjoy it, so I didn't read another for a long time, then I got a standalone and enjoyed it. Not quite sure how I ended up buying this as I've stuck to his standalones since then, but it wasn't as bad as I remembered, although I didn't enjoy the twist at the end. 3* read

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Another book finished The Last Queen of England, I maybe should have put it down and tried again at a different time, as I really struggled to focus on it, even though I quite like genealogical mysteries, and I like the author.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Well, after my good start in Jan, Feb was a rubbish month, and only read 3 - it was quite a rubbish month in general with loads of stormy weather, ironically staying at home more didn't help me read more, not helped by the fact I struggled with one of the books.

March is non fiction month, am hoping that as they are mainly short and some are light hearted books, that I'll be able to get through quite a few.

message 31: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3328 comments Let's hope so Desley. I'm now 3 behind even though I posted a review the other day. Not sure what the problem is as I'm still reading steadily!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments I'm only 1 ahead now after my good start. Hope you catch up

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments First non fiction book read, I did enjoy it Come, Tell Me How You Live don't seem to be getting as much reading time as expected on my days off, but I have had some fun day trips.

message 34: by Desley (Cat fosterer) (last edited Mar 20, 2022 09:34AM) (new)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments 2 more books finished Behind the Horror: True Stories That Inspired Horror Movies - I enjoyed some of these, and it did make me want to watch Jaws (which I bought during lockdown but not watched yet) and maybe re-watch a couple of films. I could have read my second in one day as it was only 187 pages, but I made it last over 2 - I think the version has been edited though, one of the short stories got very negative comments, but I don't remember reading it! Marrying Off Mother: And Other Stories. Now going to finish one of last month's books before continuing with my non fiction books. Just a shame I've again bought more books than I've read - wandered past the bookshop in the village yesterday, they have a stand outside with 3 books for 50p, so I just picked up 2 Harlen Coben (turned out one was 2 in 1) and a John Grisham, didn't care if I had already read them, turns out I've read 2 of the Harlen Coben books, but 2 for 50p isn't bad, and he seemed very grateful for the sale.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments End of March update, quite pleased with myself. 5.75 non fiction books, and about 3/4 of a Feb book. 4 books ahead

April is new authors month, looking forward to it and hoping some will be good enough for me to buy more of (and that the one I do own more of is good!)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments New authors is going well, have enjoyed the 3 I've read so far and nearly half into the 4th - we've had good weather this weekend so I've taken advantage - read a whole 460 page book in an afternoon yesterday, hoping for more days like that. I would read more Harry Hole books, a friend then told me she read The Bat, but she was put off reading more, shame she didn't mention it first, I could have given her the warning too. Enjoyed The Schemer, shame there doesn't appear to be a sequel to it, would definitely read it and glad I have 2 more of hers. Today only managed 46% of my book as I saw both family and a friend.

message 37: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3328 comments Wow - that's amazing Desley. I used to be a quick reader but it is now taking me 4 or 5 days to get through a 600 - 700 page book.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Thanks Pam, finished the book I started yesterday pm but it was only 267 pages. I can't remember the last time I read one that long in one afternoon, but hope it isn't the last!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Keep forgetting to update this when I finish a book! 3 finished since the last update, not sure I'd read another Richard Castle book, but overall, a good month of reading and looking forward to May, which is standalone so also has some new authors. 6 books ahead, so this might be another year I get to increase my target, as long as I keep making the time to read.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments 3 books read so far this month, and 70% into a fourth, I have bought 3 today though!! I didn't enjoy A Morbid Taste for Bones all that much and wasn't sure about The Color Purple till about 3/4 the way in, then it went to a 4* read and need to watch the film. Torn about next month though, it's either serial eyes or paperback, might have to pick out of a tub to decide!

message 41: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3328 comments Good progress Desley!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Thanks, I can't believe I'm half way through and not halfway through the year yet, might have to increase it again! Enjoying my extra reading time.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments I finished my last May book, We Need to Talk About Kevin on Thu, but still not sure what to write about it, it was a hard read, definitely not a book I'd re-read, and not one I'm sure I could recommend either, so went with 3*, there was certainly a twist I didn't anticipate. June is serial eyes, so I'm seeing if I can finish the Clifton Chronicles, I started book 3 on Fri and I'm 52% in, so looking promising.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments I'm going to come back and fill in my stats, but I finished the final in the Clifton Chronicles a couple of hours ago, I was in tears at the end, but really enjoyed it, didn't actually think I'd do 5 in a month, but was then left with the dilemma of what to read for the end of the month! House is a mess though! I think reading them back to back helped, I did skip over the prologues of every book.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments I'm a bit behind on catching up, the weather has been so nice that I've either been out walking or reading and not much computer time, but I had an ingrowing toenail removed on Wed, so having to rest my foot, plus weather is a lot cooler, so thought I'd catch up. However, seem to be 9 books behind! I did a little update on Clifton Chronicles, July has been paperback month, but not that successful, have given up on 2 books, although I will try going back to the second as it's an author I like. Glad to be at home to get through the 800+ page paperback. I was struggling to get the dressing off my toe, so had a bath earlier, gave up after 1.5 hours and gave the dressing a helping hand, think it's the only time I've ever got fed up in the bath!!

message 46: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3328 comments Hope your foot is on the mend soon Desley.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Thanks Pam, luckily lying around with my foot elevated hasn't been as bad as I expected, mainly because it's been cold and wet, so not felt like I've been missing out!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments Just finished my last July book, so even though I still have reading time left, I'm going to leave it there to start August books tomorrow, when I can decide which one to start with! I'd like to say I only read 4 books in July, but the one I just finished was 881 pages, so that's at least two books to most people! Read it in 10 days as I've spent pretty much the last 10 days in my house as my toenail surgery was more painful than I expected. I have had 2 DNF's as well, was surprised by the second, Jodi Picoult, don't think I've ever stopped reading one of hers. And just realised I've achieved my tome challenge, will be interesting to see how many over I get.

message 49: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3328 comments That's good! I just finished Black House by Stephen King/Peter Straub (819 pages) - had to have two breaks to read something else because it dragged quite a bit.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12471 comments August was a good month, foot was still stopping me walking, so I read more instead, including an 898 page book in a week! So that means I've also hit my page count really early and I have to chuckle when I read back my thoughts at the back end of last year - maybe not a couple of 900+ page books, but fairly sure there has been a couple of 800+ page books! I did have another DNF, I gave up at page 50 of Fox Evil due to animal cruelty and was very tempted to throw it in the bin, but instead I've wrote a warning inside and put it on the charity pile. Enjoyed Mrs Boots so much that I bought the third book partway through reading it, so I could see how the trilogy ends (I'd already picked up the second book when it was on offer).

September is First In Series, looking forward to that as well.
