Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments So - my update.

I killed off Walt Longmire after 17 books, 2 novellas, and several short stories. #18 will be an orphan read in September. I cannot wait to find out what is going to happen to Walt! Can he fight the wandering without and come back?

I also killed off Nora Kelly after finishing Diablo Mesa I cannot tell if there will be another one or not.

I am enjoying the books written by Robert Knott for the Virgil Cole and Everett Hicks series. My library finally bought Robert B. Parker's The Bridge. I am going to re-read the 8th book, to refresh myself before I tackle Robert B. Parker's Revelation. Only one left after that.

Janice (jamasc) | 59068 comments I think there will be more Nora Kelly, but I'm treating them as orphans.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It was difficult to tell with Nora, the way it ended. (view spoiler)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments We finished listening to Timeless tonight.
I am declaring Parasol Protectorate Series by Gail Carriger is dead.
Now, my granddaughter wants to listen to the prequel series Finishing School Series by the same author. I have the first book downloaded, but I have others to listen to first.

message 105: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59068 comments I've had the first book, Soulless, to listen to for several years and not gotten around to it. Did you like the series?

message 106: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes, Janice, it was good, if a little over the top with the clothes things. If my granddaughter had not wanted to listen to it so much, I may not have finished it, although, I still may have since my library had them all available. (There is a prequel series and a sequel series too. I don’t know if I can take any more though.) It is a different take on vampires and werewolves and English government during the Victorian era. The whole super-natural clan has quite a different slant. It is somewhat steam punk too. The author is very imaginative with the characters and the dialogue quite humorous at times.

message 107: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am all caught up with the Barker & Llewelyn series until 2023 now.
Fierce Poison was a nice read, but a little drug out. I thought the series may have been coming to an end, but there is another book due to be published and by the end of the epilog, it looked like the partnership would continue with both main characters.

message 108: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my re-listen of Robert B. Parker's Blackjack and started Robert B. Parker's Revelation late last night. One more book left for this series to be finished. I will miss Virgil and Everett and all of the "he said", "she said", etc. dialog and listening to Rex Linn.

message 109: by Cherie (last edited Jun 15, 2022 04:12PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Robert B. Parker's Revelation.

Now, I am listening to the last Robert Knott novel in the series, Robert B. Parker's Buckskin. This one will finish off this series. Rex Linn must not have been available to narrate this one so the author has taken it on. Sounds okay, so far. Doesn’t seem to be in first person, as told by Everett, like all the others. Oh, it was just the first chapter.

I haven't spent the time to listen past the first three chapters of Virgil and Everett's last book.

I have been listening to An Obvious Fact again.
I could listen over and over to this specific story. There is so much trivia and history and Sherlock Holmes quotes in this story!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My library hold on the latest Maisie Dobbs audiobook, A Sunlit Weapon (Maisie Dobbs #17) by Jacqueline Winspear has finally come through. I have downloaded it but will not start it until I have finished reading Jane Hawk #5.

message 111: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Well, that was fun - NOT!
I just accidentally deleted my message that tracked what I was currently reading, had currently downloaded but not started and what was on hold. No "undo" in this stupid tool! I am going to sit in my recliner and cry for a while.

message 112: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59068 comments Bummer! I feel for you Cherie.

Thanks, Janice. I was able to put the headings into the bottom of the previous message. Hopefully I do not hit the Delete message flag again any time soon.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just finished The Night Window and I am declaring Jane Hawk by Dean Koontz as finished. This one is off of the long list of "continuing series". Whew, Jane was INTENSE!

message 116: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am going to finish People of the Book before I start on my next series book, which will be an orphan read for the Maisie Dobbs series.

message 117: by Cherie (last edited Jun 21, 2022 10:51AM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I put Club Dead on my yearly challenge for the letters in the author's name because I own a paperback copy. I started it, and had absolutely no idea what was going on, nor any memory of the first book in the series, which I read in 2015. I did not add it to my series list, or if I did, I must have taken it off - who knows. So - now I am reading the second book, Living Dead in Dallas and actually, quite enjoying it. I could use this one for my challenge, but since I own it, and I am trying to clean off my shelves, I will add the series to my list and continue with book #3 for my challenge.

You can say that again! She ate antacids as much as we did reading the book.

message 119: by Cherie (last edited Jun 23, 2022 10:04PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Jane almost had me taking them, for sure.
I am not sure that I ever read a series quite like that one.

There is a husband/wife team that wrote a series that I really liked a couple of years ago. The series is called Frieda Klein and Blue Monday is the first book. Frieda is the MC. She was fascinating! It was creepy and nail-biting for me at the time.

message 120: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Living Dead in Dallas and did a quick re-read of Dead Until Dark. I am starting Club Dead now. I think I enjoyed meeting Sookie better the second time, than I did the first time around in 2015.

message 121: by Cherie (last edited Jun 29, 2022 06:36PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Darn! All of the sudden I have too many library books to wade through. I started listening to the latest Maisie Dobbs book this morning while I waited for a meeting to start. Then I got two library notifications of books available. I picked up my hc of Robert B. Parker’s Buckskin and downloaded another audiobook. Too funny. I recommend my library to purchase the audiobook for the first Kinsey and Generro series book A Drink Before the War, and they just bought it. I have no idea how long ago it was, but I know that I finished the series at least three years ago. It will be fun to listen to, I hope. I have no idea who the narrator is yet.

message 122: by Cherie (last edited Jun 29, 2022 06:38PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Uhh, that is A Drink Before the War, Kenzie & Genarro #1, narrated by Jonathon Davis. I read it in 2019. It was a 10 star read for me. 😎

message 123: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4471 comments Thank you. I'm adding Jane Hawks and Freida Klein to my series list.
All of the books in both series are available for Kindle from my library. 👍

message 124: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Any time, Roz! I hope you enjoy them both when you can get to them. 😊

message 125: by Cherie (last edited Jun 29, 2022 06:38PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Club Dead last night before I went to bed. I feel vested in Sookie now, just to see what happens next in her life. I need to check on the availability of the next book from my library. I hope she can find a little peace and some relief from the physical battering she has taken over the last three stories. Now that she has uninvited Bill and Eric from her house, can she find some TLC and companionship away from the Vampires?

message 126: by Cherie (last edited Jun 29, 2022 06:39PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too hot here in Oregon today at almost 100F to go outside to work in the yard. I have been listening to Maisie Dobbs and playing at doing anything like house work. I just finished listening to my orphan read of A Sunlit Weapon.
Another wonderful story with Maisie, her family, her friends and the people she works with to solve a case she has been hired for and other cases she comes across along the way.

message 127: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4471 comments We've had temperatures of over 100 for over 2 weeks now and no rain. A cool day is in the 90s. Even with watering almost every day, my garden is a mess. All that work I did planting. And it's only July! Any work is done by 8 am, walks in the neighborhood are over by 9 am. Normally I walk to the gym (it's only 5 minutes away) but in this heat, if I go after 10, I drive because when I'm done at 11, it's awful walking home.
I have to get back into reading Maisie Dobbs. I put her aside for a while. Actually, I've put all my series books aside for a bit.

message 128: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to A Drink Before the War and the audio performance by the narrator was a 10! I wish my library would purchase the series in audiobook format. I haven’t looked, but they may have them on CD. It was a nice visit with Patrick and his partner!

I have no audiobooks on hand to listen to now.

I started reading A Gathering of Shadows. I still need to finish reading Buckskin

I’m waiting for the third Penn Cage ebook to be available.

message 129: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too hot, Roz! Sorry about your garden.
We are finally back into some cooler weather here. I can get some yard work done now without getting up at the crack of morning. Too bad I am a night owl. I just can’t seem to reset my inner clock to be an early bird.

message 130: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I pawed my way through my series lists for a book to listen to that was available from my library last night and found the second book in The Great Library series. Slow day for work with many people having taking today off as vacation to have a four day weekend, so I finished Paper and Fire. It took me a chapter or two to come back into the story but eventually my memory dragged up the story line. (view spoiler)
Fortunately, Ash and Quill is available so I will downloaded it next!

message 131: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59068 comments Oh no! It has a cliffhanger. Ugh. One of the things I disliked about the 1st book was that it was "to be continued".

message 132: by Cherie (last edited Nov 28, 2023 03:19PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yeah, “to be continued is a lot different than a cliffhanger though. So - if you want to find out what happens in the next ‘right after you have to go right into the next book following a cliffhanger. With a “to be continued you can decide when to pursue the next story - at least that is how I look at them, especially if you care about the characters or their status. I have listened to not quite 70% of Ash and Quill, the third book in The Great Library. I have the next two books on hold. Don’t read unless you are going to read the 3 book. (view spoiler)

message 133: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59068 comments I'm not sure if I'll read the 3rd book and I'm not sure when I'll read the 2nd. Maybe when I read it, I will be in a different frame of mind and enjoy it more. Who knows.

message 134: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Ash and Quill It ended with “to be continued. The next book is on hold.
I really have no idea what the plan is. I know what happened. I hope the author must have some devious plan to get to a good ending.

message 135: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am currently listening to Smoke and Bone, the fourth book in The Great Library series. This one is full of surprises!

message 136: by Cherie (last edited Nov 28, 2023 03:21PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The different colored Londons and the magic in A Gathering of Shadows is intriguing. (view spoiler)

Roz | 4471 comments Cherie wrote: "The different colored Londons and the magic is A Gathering of Shadows is intriguing. [spoilers removed]"

I totally agree. I really enjoyed the series and was sorry to have it end.

message 138: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Smoke and Iron today while I was doing some mindless database work. I will be starting Sword and Pen next for the series finish.

message 139: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I bought Murder at the Royal Botanic Gardens from Audible. This will be for a series kill also.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just finished reading A Gathering of Shadows. I am reading the author’s Acknowledgments. She says that she is always surprised to have made it this far. She said it took her years to write, edit and see it to publication. It is such an un-fathomable dedication to me, but I am totally grateful to her. I am not sure that I enjoyed this one more than the first book, but I liked the magic tournament a lot and watching Lila grow as a character. I still dislike Rhy and the King and Queen for the way they treat Kell.
I am not going to jump into the last book just yet. I need to finish other things but I will be hoping Kell can hold on in White London and I cannot wait to see what Lila is going to do next!

message 142: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4471 comments I'm sure you'll like the last in the series as much as I did.

message 143: by Cherie (last edited Jul 12, 2022 10:51AM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am finally getting to the hardcopy book I picked up at my library after giving up on the audiobook version of Robert B. Parker’s Buckskin (Virgil Cole & Everett Hitch). I read the first 105 pages and I’m going to bed now.

message 144: by Cherie (last edited Jul 12, 2022 10:59AM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Robert B. Parker's Buckskin last night.

I am declaring Robert Knott's series of Virgil Cole & Everett Hitch as killed.

I am also declaring The Great Library Series by Rachel Caine as killed.

My long list just got shorter by one and I am down to three left of the ones that I started reading this year.

message 145: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am listening to Murder at the Royal Botanic Gardens, the fifth book in Wrexford and Sloane, as an orphan.
---------------------------------
I was looking at some availability on some shorter series that I could finish and found out two more books have been added to each of the series. I downloaded one from each Lady Sherlock #3 and The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries #4

message 146: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Murder at the Royal Botanic Gardens for another orphan down.

I started listening to The Hollow of Fear but two years was a little to long ago to dredge up the story line details. I am going to keep listening and see if it will come back to me. Kate Reading is the narrator and I like how her voice brings a great atmosphere to the story. All I can remember is that Charlotte pretends to be an ill Sherlock and I liked the guy she was attracted to. Mrs. Watson is her partner.

message 147: by Cherie (last edited Jul 19, 2022 02:51PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Hollow of Fear at noon and I am now listening to #4, The Art of Theft. The Hollow of Fear was a long one! I loved the scenes between Charlotte and Ash. The story was pretty convoluted though. It was strange in several places when the story seemed to go back in time a few days to explain things.

It seems there will be 7 books in the series when A Tempest at Sea is published in 2023. I have book #5 on hold and #6 waiting to read in my Overdrive booklist. #7 will have to be an orphan.

message 148: by Cherie (last edited Jul 21, 2022 05:33PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Just as I was finishing The Art of Theft last night, I got a message that #5 was ready to be downloaded. The Art of Theft was a much shorter story than the previous one. I enjoyed it though. It was like listening to an old Mission Impossible TV episode. They got a team together, checked out the locations, tried out make-up, assigned tasks, and stormed the walls of the Villa in Paris.

I started Murder on Cold Street after my meeting this morning.

message 149: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Murder on Cold Street today and have started Miss Moriarty, I Presume?. I had a headache most of the day, and did not get far.

message 150: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Miss Moriarty, I Presume? - Lady Sherlock Series and since there is no other book published yet, I am declaring this series killed too! Another one off of my ongoing long list.
