I trust your recommendation. Thanks.
Audio performance by Paul Boehmer
3.5 stars
I’m not sure how I’ve missed this fantasy series. I did read more fantasy before the turn of the century. This is the first book, published in 1995. ( I was busy having my second child. Not much reading happened for several years after his birth.)
I had the beautifully illustrated 25th anniversary edition on my kindle and also a borrowed audiobook. I enjoyed Paul Boehmer’s performance, but as I felt the plot was moving slowly, I spent more time with the text. I’m afraid I skimmed sections that were repetitive. While I enjoyed the young Fritz, I was annoyed with the endless nature of the neglect and abuse heaped on his struggle for recognition. (Just another example of my distaste for the coming of age story.)
I was somewhat bored with the predictable plot. The evil, scheming, antagonists were obvious. There was no surprise in the violent outcome. On the other hand, I enjoyed the elaborate setting. There was immersive world building. The illustrated edition has a lovely map. The paranormal/magical attributes of the heroes and the villains added complexity to the large cast of characters. It made me feel that this popular series may improve as it goes on. I will probably read the next one when I want an escape from the real world.
