I made it. Finished The Thorn Birds last night.

This is a fascinating book, though not a cheerful read. Like you Bronwyn, I got right into the family situations. I think Helen Garner is a really important Australian writer. I have her latest, This House of Grief sitting on my bookshelf, just waiting for me to find time to devote my attention to it.

Wow. This is confusing. Anyway, to MaryG2e, Yes. I really like the Disher. It's very much different from most of the others I've read - mystery/thriller, that is. So much more realistic in that the police force is seen having to do more than one task. They're looking for criminals for several crimes at the same time so they aren't totally focused on the "major" crime. And, of course, they're getting the heat from above. I figured out the killer almost right away, but I don't know how. And it didn't matter. There were so many other interesting things going on.

Thank you! I'm really enjoying reading Aussie books. Many are quite different even in the same genre and I like the challenge so I can make reading them a challenge.
