Wayne and I will be spending time in the Gambia with Reading the Ceiling towards the middle of May. Everyone welcome to join us.

Wayne Jordaan | 825 comments Yes please join us, the more, the merrier. I know very little about the Gambia, so I went and reread the short section on Riaan Manser's stay in The Republic of Gambia (big name for a tiny country) in Around Africa on My Bicycle. Not much there either - a small country between two river banks, half the population of a small South African city, and main income derived from exporting peanuts.

You know more than I do!

I have finished Reading The Ceiling, and I must say my interpretation of the blurb and the title led me to a different book than the one I read. I think you made a similar comment Carolien. I must also add that my initial expectation was reinforced by the first paragraph.

I'm just over halfway and I agree that the blurb and the actual book is quite different. Based on the blurb I basically expected her to marry the 3 men. I like how there is overlap between the 3 possible timelines. Her sister's wedding for instance, but with a different focus in each story.

It's a very comfortable read.

I really liked this. I'm not sure which story I prefer, but she gets a measure of satisfaction in all of them although in circumstances not foreseen at 18.
