This book is quite a few years old, the premise is that someone discovers how to manipulate the base structure of the universe to create a computer that self replicates.

They are then able to upload themselves (and a group of others) into this machine and live in a fully simulated env they control.

A few people manage to tag along and are stuck in the "in between" like a virus, being only able to monitor the others.

At some point one of the world collapses (I think) and they decide to lower the simulation speed so time for them will move a millionth of the real time in the universe.
