Hannah | 3075 comments I read this book for the favourites tag last month, but didn’t get round to writing my review until now, so I’m posting it here. Whilst I can understand that lots of people would like this book, it really didn’t click with me. It felt like a rather strange book with the combination of philosophy with a novel, although rather than being a significant part of the plot, the philosophy was constantly being spelt out, and I found I didn’t really like being told what the important bits were, or how I should read. The characters felt quite distant, which was due to the detached style that Kundera had written in, and by not connecting to them, I was not interested in what happened to them.

Peacejanz | 1015 comments I agree - read it a long time ago and will never try to reread it. Good review. Thanks. peace, janz

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 10552 comments I've had this on my TBR forever, probably only because I love the title. I keep letting it sit because of reviews like this. I might still read it when I'm in the mood for something like this.

I’m starting to wonder if this belongs on a shelf with past trendy quasi-philosophical books like - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Siddhartha, The Alchemist, Celestine Prophesy, and (for boomers) Jonathon Livingston Seagull.

Peacejanz | 1015 comments NancyJ - you may be right. Maybe it just belongs on the shelf that we look at now and then and think, "I'll get to that later." A friend of mine helped me sort out those a few years ago - I do not miss them. So maybe I need to have her over again to go through my books. When we love books, we just hang on to those that someone, maybe only one, told us it was good. peace, janz

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8222 comments @NancyJ ... I think you may be right about the "fad" of quasi-philosophical books. I read this for one of my F2F book groups a couple of years ago. I often like philosophical books but this one ... not so much.

I agree with this, Nancy. I'd also add Life of Pi to this list, and I liked that one even less.
