Andrea | 3447 comments I decided to dive into the world of Shannara, I have nearly the entire series in hardcover so I should probably find out if I even like it, after all that's a lot of shelf space to waste if I don't!

To go along with that, I figured I'd make it a "non-human humanoid year", meaning all those fantasy creatures that look human but aren't. Your faeries, dwarves, elves, giants, pixies, goblins, orcs, gnomes, trolls....well, there are lot of them. For now I'm leaving out the "non-humans that used to be human" since I own enough vampire/werewolf books to fill an entire year just on their own. Although if you wanted to recommend something like the Sookie Stackhouse series, well that may focus on vampires/weres but there's a decent amount of fairy stuff too, so that'd count.

So I'm looking for recommendations, what books and series would you recommend? I may find I even own the books but didn't know they features elves and fairies. Oh, and I love variety (have to fill a BINGO card after all), so toss out old and new, fantasy/sf, graphic novels, manga, any genre (e.g. urban fantasy, epic fantasy, romance, mystery, even horror) and any age group.

Ooh, my sister has that series. She became a big Tad Williams fan because of that. Definitely making a note of it.

And never knew Artemis Fowl had anything to do with Fairies (though reading the blurb of the first book it's kinda obvious). When my cousin was little he was really into those books so I'd always been curious about them.

*goes to make a "maybe" to-read shelf to keep track of suggestions*

Georgann | 270 comments One of my favorite series is Mercy Thompson. The MC's are shifters, but there are plenty of all sorts of other supernaturals. Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs Moon Called

Andrea | 3447 comments Well, turns out I had more than I thought I had, I put 110 books on my to-read for next year, with only about 8 I still need to acquire to complete the various series. A good chunk of this is of course Shannara that has a lot of books, and then a lot by Julie Kagawa.

I the created a "maybe" list of 37 books where I was missing at least one book in those series too. I made a list of the books I didn't have and will keep an eye out in used bookstores but they won't be priorities. Though I could also check libraries to see if I get lucky for some. And then there's the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn that my sister has.

So yeah, 140 potential books for next year! And I haven't even started looking into library books, particularly want to do that for series I have started but not finished yet, there's a handful of those based on this theme.

Well, first to finish my SF books for this year!

BTW, if anyone has any graphic novel/manga suggestions involving fairies, dwarves etc, it'd be nice to have some breaks from the big fat novels to have some quickie picture filled stories to hunt down :)

Angie | 83 comments I don't know if you've ever read Detective Strongoak and the Case of the Dead Elf or any of the other books in the series. I discovered it on Amazon a couple of years back. The first book is only 99 cents, and it's kind of a hardboiled mystery from what I can tell. I still have to read it myself.

I like this theme idea. I might adapt it a bit for my own uses.

Andrea | 3447 comments That's an excellent one for mixing genres (mystery x fantasy)

Deeptanshu | 121 comments Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance and the other D&D franchises will provide you with endless hours of content.
For something more standalone but darker, A Broken Blade is excellent. For something lighter the Artemis Fowl series is a lot of fun.
