TerryJane | 3725 comments GUIDE TO THE 2023 YEARLY CHALLENGES

We have 15 yearly challenges to offer you in 2023 member favorites which are back by popular demand, and some new ones to try as well!

Below you’ll find a brief introduction and a link to each of the challenges, listed in alphabetical order. Links will be added as the challenges are posted.

Incidentally, we also offer shorter challenges related to our quarterly and monthly themes. If you have any suggestions for a quarterly or monthly challenge for 2023, please visit the 2023 Member Challenge Ideas thread to share your ideas.

-------------------------------------------------------------

100 YEARS OF WONDERS: Celebrate Disney’s anniversary by reading books published or set in their 100-year history timeline. Pick your favorite years, complete one or more sections, or read them all to earn Ultimate Mickey Mouse status!

A-Z CHALLENGE: LOCATIONS: This year’s A-Z challenge involves finding real and fictional locations within your books. Visit towns, cities, states, countries, planets, universes, etc. to fit each letter of the alphabet. Where will 2023 take you?

BIBLIOPOLY: Inspired by the Monopoly board game, this challenge has 40 prompts related to property colors; original game tokens; book, author and character traits; and community activities. Bibliophiles can pick a few favorites, read them all, or put a token on the GO space and roll the dice to choose!

BOOKWORMS TAKE SHELFIES: This challenge encourages you to be "shelfish" about your reading. Organize your reading around 20 virtual bookshelves. Freely fine-tune your chosen shelves to accommodate your own reading tastes and plans. Take a shelfie!

CLEAR THE SHELVES: Are your bookshelves (and ebook and audiobook devices) groaning under the weight of many unread books? This challenge will clear unread books from your physical and virtual shelves. Dust off your shelves then start clearing!

GENRE BINGO: Use the bingo card provided or create your own original Genre Bingo card using a bingo card generator. Next, read books to make as many "bingos" as possible. Set your goal to read a total number of books, achieve a number of bingos, or both!

I SPY: In this challenge, you will look for cover images or title words to fit a variety of categories. If you finish the standard list of 25, there are 5 bonus categories you can try. How many will you spy?

LET’S TURN PAGES: Rather than the number of books you finish in 2023, this challenge lets you track the pages you read, whether you read a novella or a chunkster. Audiobooks also qualify; simply use the page count for the latest hardcover edition. Choose a goal and let's turn pages!

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: This challenge speaks to your inner armchair detective. Solve cases by reading crime fiction to earn promotions through the ranks. As a bonus, join INTERPOL’s Fugitive Investigative Support team, if you dare. Grab your magnifying glass, and get your sleuth on!

PILED HIGH: Create a pile of books by carrying forward a word or cover image. You may have multiple piles of five or more books, and you may read them in any order once you have a plan. If your pile gets tall enough to topple over, you have only your shelf to blame!

POPSUGAR: We've brought over the prompt-based 2023 PopSugar Reading Challenge, so you can track your progress with fellow group members. There are 40 standard prompts and 10 bonus prompts. How many will pop up on your reading list?

SERIAL READER: This challenge is all about serial reading. Set your yearly goal to start new series, continue or finish series you’ve previously begun, or read an entire series from start to finish. Get ready to get serious about your new and unfinished series in 2023!

TBR JAR: Tackle your growing mountain of TBR (To-Be-Read) books. Use one or more fun methods to make a list, then write the titles on slips of paper, place them in a physical jar, and shake. Pull out a slip to choose which TBR to read next. Let’s get shaking!

TO BOLDLY GO: Join this challenge to boldly go around the world through books! Read up to two books per country based on the location and/or the author’s nationality. As you report the countries you visit, we will track how many countries we collectively visit as a group. Ready, set, go!

UNITED IN READING: For this challenge, you will read books related to the United Nations calendar of international recognition days, during the month that each of these recognitions occur. Let’s honor our united diversity in 2023!

Not this time Echo. That one wasn't among the 5 most active challenges, which automatically came back; and when we polled for which five of the others to bring back, color challenge finished in the bottom group.

Hope you'll find another challenge to enjoy. 😊

Echo, when I have a challenge that I really like from any group, I put it in my Members Corner as a "personal" challenge. Let's me keep on doing the ones I really enjoy.

I'm not sure what you mean, but you can create your own personal challenge for that here

Marlene, if you wish to create a Personal Challenge or Members' Corner thread within this group in order to track your reading and any challenges you've joined, you'll find instructions here:

2023 Personal Challenge

2023 Members' Corner

If you are looking for the ŷ challenge, where you can set an overall ŷ goal for 2023, it's on the ŷ home page. Look for 2023 Reading Challenge in the left column at goodreads.com.

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Brenda wrote: "How do I do the “clear your shelves challenge?!"

If you click n the link to it, the first thread is an introduction to how to participate.
The point it to read books that you've already had in your possession, prior to January 1st 2023, since that's when the challenge started from.

The description states:
"The books you read for this challenge are books that are already in your possession. Whatever you do for this challenge, you are not allowed to read a book obtained after December 31, 2022 unless you have read at least 5 books you already own."

Hi, Brenda! Here's some info that should be helpful, copied from a different challenge. I'll let the Clear the Shelves leader know that her link is just coming back to this yearly guide. Happy reading!

Darlene, I'm sorry to hear that this challenge isn't being updated. I'll check with the other mods. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Debra Diggs | 479 comments How often do the yearly challenges normally get updated? Weekly, monthly, quarterly? Is there a rule of thumb?

message 25: by Lisa (last edited Apr 12, 2023 11:00PM) (new)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Debra Diggs wrote: "How often do the yearly challenges normally get updated? Weekly, monthly, quarterly? Is there a rule of thumb?"

Update frequency depends on the challenge leader's capacity of time and the length of the challenge.
Monthly challenges are normally updated weekly, Quarterly updates happen perhaps a couple time per month. and Yearly are usually monthly (or so)

Are you referring to its suitability for a 2023 reading challenge, or are you considering it for the upcoming year?
