The 2023 Translated Classics Challenge has two simple rules:

1. The book needs to have been originally published before 1973 (1983 for Children's Books).
2. Please state the original language the book was written in. You can also add the language it was translated into if you wish.

There are four stages in your reading journey:

1. Relaxed Reader-5 books
2. Expanding Horizons- 10 books
3. Advancing in the Journey-15 books
4. Dedicated Explorer-20 books

Happy book travels and good luck on your challenges everyone!

The Bibliophile Doctor | 117 comments This is cool. I will try and read as much as possible, will be aiming for dedicated explorer but I think I will be happy with whatever I can manage.

Can we also share the books which we are planning to read? Also is it okay if books we read are short stories? Just asking questions to plan which books I can add for this challenge.

message 23: by Rosemarie, Northern Roaming Scholar (last edited Dec 19, 2022 06:01AM) (new)

Rosemarie | 14820 comments Mod
Whichever way works best for you, Bibliophile! Each member can choose whether to plan in advance or not.
And sharing books you plan to read or have read is always welcome!

Short stories are fine if they're a certain length, that is not too short.
If you're not sure that the story is long enough, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi, everyone. I read We by Yevgeny Zamyatin years ago in the Thai translated version and I loved it so much. I want to read it again and wonder which translation to go to in English. Maybe the one by Mirra Ginsburg? or the Penguin classics? There are so many 😂

I should say Penguin for any classic. But that's my personal preference. :) I do have one Mirra Ginsburg translation of a Russian classic, and I thought it was pretty good.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you, Piyangie! I'll give the one by Ginsburg a try first then. I think I saw it on Kindle for 0.99$

The Bibliophile Doctor wrote: "I have a query. Can a short story be considered for this challenge? A translated one of course."

It can count if it's a certain length-at least 25 pages in length if it's a stand alone.
If it's in a collection of stories that is under 250 pages long, then the whole book needs to be read to count.

On my list for this year (which is not a strict list) are such titles as the following:

2. As many of the Greek Tragedies (and comedies) that I still have not read.

3. Dante's Paradiso

You have a good variety there, Dylan. I read the Canterbury Tales many years ago in Middle English. It was very time-consuming. Some of the tales are very dry-others not at all.
