Bella (Kiki) (coloraturabella) | 4619 comments I read Joel Fuhrman's books and follow many of his suggestions. I find it difficult to get some many green vegetables every day, so I have green smoothies with a lot of good things added like nuts and seeds.

message 5: by madrano (new)

madrano | 22272 comments I get that! Smoothies serve to provide greens daily, as it's a fast way that fits that necessity.

I also like Fuhrman, Greger, Ornish, Esselstyn (father & Son), Campbell, Barnard etc. All the plant based, low saturated fat dr.

I try to follow their recommendations. Though I am not a vegetarian or vegan. I try to lean that way.

message 7: by Bella (Kiki) (new)

Bella (Kiki) (coloraturabella) | 4619 comments And I like being able to add flax, chia, protein powder, any healthy thing I want to the smoothies, Madrano.

I can't follow too many, Alias, or I just give up. I do try to stick to a plant-based diet, with the exception of fish, which is no longer considered meat. Salmon is my preference.

message 8: by madrano (new)

madrano | 22272 comments Yum, salmon. My favorite, too, Kiki. When we were in the Pacific NW this autumn, we lapped it up like kittens. Several versions melted in our mouths.

I can never recall the rules of eating chia. Is it that it needs to be soaked for hours before incorporation into smoothies & other foods? Or am i mixing it up with something else?

message 9: by Bella (Kiki) (new)

Bella (Kiki) (coloraturabella) | 4619 comments You don't have to soak chia Madrano, but you get more nutrition from them if you do.

Edamame has to be blanched before eating or it's poisonous. Would make us sick. Much of the edamame we buy frozen has already been blanched, so check the bag before adding it to a salad.

message 10: by madrano (new)

madrano | 22272 comments Thank you, Kiki. The chia info is good to know. We are familiar with edamame but i had actually forgotten about the blanching, as we usually get the same frozen brand, which has been blanched. Good reminder.

I try to do a minimum of 10K steps daily. Then I lift weights at the gym.

Strength training is very important as we get older. We have to be strong to recover from sprains and strains and especially, surgery.

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 27627 comments April 5th

National Walking Day is every year on the first Wednesday in April and takes place on April 5 this year. National Walking Day is exactly as it sounds a day to celebrate the easiest way to be the healthiest version of you. Walking for thirty to sixty minutes per day may sound like it isn’t much, but studies have shown that it can drastically improve your health and even help prevent ailments such as type II diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

madrano | 22272 comments Oops! I totally missed this. Good idea for a reminder, though.

I'm going to count watching a tv program last night which featured a woman (victim, as it turns out) walking for exercise as my contribution to the day. ;-)

Very nice. It's a nice way to decompress after work, too.

message 22: by madrano (new)

madrano | 22272 comments Shomeret, that's a full day, if you ask me. And, a great time to prepare for the work day, then slowly let go of the work day at the end.

Yes, if I've had a difficult day at work, the walk back to mass transit calms me down.

National Exercise Day is celebrated on April 18 every year. It is a day to encourage everyone to participate in physical activities. Exercise enhances our general health by giving us more energy, making us feel better, and even extending our lives by years.

I mentioned Dr. Peter Attia's book in another thread. I wanted to share his latest video. He is interviewing Dr. Rhonda Patrick. As you can see he gets quite into the weeds. However, I think you can still learn a few things for those that don't want to go all in as he does. The video has time stamps so you can skip to the topics that are interest to you.

~*Kim*~ (greenclovers75) | 447 comments Anyone else struggle with anxiety? Ever since my dad passed away, mine has been through the roof. I've been chewing the inside of my lips, which works my jaws, which results in headaches. I have also started really picking at my cuticles, too. I've been on some meds for about 2 weeks, but it hasn't kicked in yet. I'm also trying some other supplements as well. Unfortunately it's not anxiety attacks, but all day anxiety, which really sucks.

message 37: by madrano (new)

madrano | 22272 comments I’m sorry to hear about this, Kim. I release my anxiety while sleeping by grinding my teeth. That produced headaches, jaw pain and tooth chipping. For me the fix was rather simple, i wear a night guard, shaped by my dentist so there is no leeway.

I mention this because i wouldn’t have realized i was anxious otherwise. While i don’t meditate per se, when i realize I am anxious, i try some deep breathing exercises, which help me reset my thinking.

Good luck in your search for relief, Kim. For my part, i have found that the death of a loved one sends me into an anxious state, so you are not alone, if that helps.

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 27627 comments Kim, perhaps grief counseling might be of help.

I love to read, listen and talk about health. Most of the podcasts I listen to are about health.

The fruit water sounds good. They sell one with a tube in the middle of the pitcher that you put the fruit in.

I love green salads, and would love to eat them every night. I can't go to the grocery every day or every other day, and salad does not keep in the refrigerator. I do eat it when I can, and I bought a green smoothie mix called Fruniti, so I have a green smoothie for lunch nearly every day. I also drink Scrubber daily for fiber, prebiotics, and probiotics.
