Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Dead Spy's Guide to Espionage on Jan 4th. This is the last published book in the Eva Destruction series so I am declaring my first kill of the year!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My library purchased the Max Tudor audiobook, A Demon Summer, per my request, so I get to be the first to listen to it. I have the 7th book, In Prior's Wood, on my yearly challenge spread sheet, so I need to get cracking. ;o)

message 6: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am also listening to the 3rd Dragonslayer book, Servant of the Crown, narrated by my favorite guy, Simon Vance. This book is for my yearly challenge.

message 7: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11303 comments Cherie, I admired your organization of your series goals.

If I don't remember to order the next in the series immediately after I finish one of the books, the rest get forgotten.

Simon Vance is also my favorite narrator. While planning my 2023 books, I decided to read as many of his narrations as possible, no matter the subject.

message 8: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4470 comments Again an incredible list. As I look through it I can see several series I’ve started but I guess I’m like Almeta, if I don’t get to the next in the series I forget about it, sometimes for a long time. I’m going to have to make a more comprehensive list of ones I’ve started just to see how many there are. I liked that site some of us used a couple or 3 or more years ago that tracked books in series, but it shut down. I don’t remember the name of it but I think it started with an F.

Too funny, Almeta, but I did the same thing. I ran a library search and added all of the audiobooks that he had narrated (that I had not already listened to) to my wish list. I found many good stories that way. I really only found one that I did not care for. It is amazing how many books and series he has narrated!

You may want to check out Michael Page. He has become another favorite.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Roz wrote: "The site was FictFact but it closed down in 2019."

Yeah, it was too bad that they could not keep it up. It took a l-o-n-g time to find and update all of the series I had up until then.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished A Demon Summer this morning and discovered it fit the "pregnant person" task for my crossword challenge. I suspect that the next book would have become the "new-born baby" part of it, but I will have to wait and see, when I can get the next book.

I got an email from FictFact, or one of the owners. It was a Christmas greeting. I've been meaning to check if it's back up. The email is on my work computer, so I'll check it out in the morning.

message 14: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4470 comments i recently started looking for a site that would be similar to FictFact and found Books On Track.
Otherwise, I'm going to be spending a lot of time working on my series spreadsheets.

message 15: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I got the next Max Tudor book, The Haunted Season, and already finished it. Yes, I could have used it for the new born baby (pregnant woman) task. Owen is the baby’s name.

message 16: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Max Tudor #6 is called Devil’s Breath. I have downloaded it from (or on) Libby - I haven’t figured that out yet. I will listen to it after I finish the Dragonslayer book that I am listening to.

message 17: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Servant of the Crown for my yearly challenge. This is the third book in the Dragonslayer trilogy, narrated by Simon Vance.
I really liked the third story and how the trilogy ended. I am actually doing a re-listen to the first and second book in the trilogy - just as a re-fresher and because I love listening to Simon so much.
Dragonslayer killed Jan 18th .

Two down and I haven't started a new series yet.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Three Locks for my yearly challenge task and now, I can read the fifth book in the series for the next task and the series kill. Moving on to What Child is This?.

If you are into Sherlock Holmes and admire the Doyle cannon, then you should love Bonnie MacBird's stories. She has a great sense of humor and good grasp of the characters. She does her research on the locations and history of the time. She writes a pretty good story with good plots, IMO.
Baird has a link in all of her ebooks to her website, where she does a chapter by chapter info like BookDrum for locations, names, products, music, etc. Good stuff! She intimated that Mrs. Hudson may be the one who irons for Holmes. Note: Her author's page info is not up to date here in GR.

message 19: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished What Child is This? - for Sherlock Holmes Adventure and I added this series to my kill list.

message 20: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am currently reading Murder at the Mena House for my crossword challenge and the author now has three more books in her Jane Wunderly Series. I am thinking of reading the second book for the Feb monthly challenge, so I guess Jane is going on my Add list.

message 21: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished reading Murder at the Mena House for my crossword challenge and started the second book Murder at Wedgefield Manor on Feb 1st for the monthly challenge. I finished it this evening and I have added A Jane Wunderly Mystery series as my first series add for the year.
There are currently four books in the series and a fifth to be released in September.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I will start The Cabinet of Dr. Leng, Pendergast #21 tomorrow for my first toppler read. It will be my first second orphan read for the year.

message 23: by Cherie (last edited Feb 07, 2023 11:53PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Cabinet of Dr. Leng. Boy, can those guys write a story! I do not even care that it ended in a cliffhanger - they even apologized.

I am starting an old Tarzan story for the toppler. I do not have the PelLucidar series on my list. I know that I read it years and years ago, so I will not even count it at an orphan. Tarzan at the Earth's Core.

I discovered The Beasts of Tarzan in my grandmother's piano cabinet when I was visiting her one summer. I think I was 11 yo. I bought the whole series in paperback over a couple of years in the 80's. I have no idea where they are today though.

message 24: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Still lost in the land of Pellucidar.

I am just starting on the last book of the Pellucidar series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, although technically I just finished the last real “book of the series, written by him. The 7th book is a collection of short stories published 12 years after he passed. It was published in 1966. I am looking forward to the cover story, Savage Pellucidar. Burroughs had a great sense of humor and a fantastic imagination.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It has been a long time since I added a Poirot book to my tasks, but my library picked up the second book in the series and I listened to the audiobook last night and today, while I was working.
I finished The Murder on the Links and have updated my Poirot list by one more book.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I scored a Nero Wolfe story that I had not read yet too. UP Next:
The Rubber Band. I wish it was an audiobook, but ebook will do.

Jannene | 3124 comments What's happening Cherie?

message 29: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments HEY Jannene! Not much happening with me.
Still working from home, still reading and listening to a lot of audiobooks books.
Haven't gone anywhere except to my back yard to do yard work.
Was sick for a couple of weeks but I am well now. Finally getting my energy back to do more than sit in my chair reading.

I keep thinking that I need to come here and post some of my books, but it seems to get put off every day. I DO read the threads, I just don't get on to post much.

I discovered some new(old) Nero Wolfe series books from my library and finished the one above. I have re-listened to a couple of audio books. One I am re-listening to right now is Some Buried Caesar. Michael Pritchard is such a great voice for Archie Goodwin and Wolfe. I am reading Archie Meets Nero Wolfe.

I am currently reading A Tempest at Sea- the latest Lady Sherlock series book.

message 30: by Cherie (last edited Apr 26, 2023 03:20PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I cannot seem to catch up with what I have been reading.
I finished A Tempest at Sea - Lady Sherlock for an orphan read and my first book for Badge 2 for my yearly challenge.

I really enjoyed the Robert Goldsborough story of when Archie met Nero Wolf. I read the first book in the series at least two years ago, but was not sure I was going to continue. I have added his series to my list.

Believe it or not, I think I listened to the first two of Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider series books from my library.
The first was Stormbreaker , #2 Point Blank, I have #3 Skeleton Key on hold.
I will add these to my list when I finish #3. I think there are 12 but there are a slew of in-between stories so it is confusing.

message 31: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished A Spark of White Fire for the Aug 24 hr toppler. Another new series added. It was not great, but I am willing to read to see what happens next. Interesting world building.

I have to catch up on posting the Comisario Brunetti series books by
Donna Leon. I have listened to way more than I have posted.

message 34: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 268 comments I love the idea of "killing" series and might go and open a similar thread.
What are "orphans", though?

message 35: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Kabrada,
What we call "orphans" are books that are published after one declares a series killed - when you have read all of the currently published volumes. Okay?

Example: I declared the Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon killed in April of 2020. Since then, book #9 Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone was published in Nov of 2021. This one will be an orphan for me when I read it.

message 36: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 268 comments Ah, thanks.
I am looking forward to three such orphans being released in September. ;)

message 37: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 268 comments I checked your list and saw a few series I recognized.

Killed by me:
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
44 Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

Mostly killed (cannot exactly remember as I read those in the 1980s)
Hercule Poirot by Agatha Christie
Miss Marple by Agatha Christie

Not yet started, but planning to read one fine day:
Guardians of Ga’Hoole by Kathryn Lasky
Thursday Next by Jasper Fforde
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith

Working on:
A Chet and Bernie Mystery Series by Spencer Quinn

On my “maybe list:
Dublin Murder Squad by Tana French

Abandoned:
Kurt Wallander by Henning Mankell (read two or three but did not get “hooked)
Commissario Brunetti by Donna Leon (DNF’d one book, no idea why I did not like it)
Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (I think I read the first two or three books and then did not continue when new ones came out after that)

message 38: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I put off reading the Dublin Murder squad for a long time, but I really enjoyed the first book. Unfortunately, I have not made it to the next one.

Re your abandoned list:
For some reason, I really like Kurt Wallander. He is such a sad character, but the stories are facinating to me. I usually try to listen to the audiobooks, when I can, but my library does not have them all.

My library has all of the Comisario Brunetti by Donna Leon in both audiobook and ebook. I love the characters, especially Guido's wife. The trivia about Italy and Venice are interesting and I enjoy the stories.

I fell in love with Outlander because of the audiobook narrator's voice. I could listen to the stories over and over, and have! I have been saving the last audiobook for quite a while (I have it from Audible). I have never watched the TV series.

All of us have different reasons for following series, and it is a good thing that there are so many out there!

message 39: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 268 comments I listen to loads of audio books as well. The three abandoned series above were regular books, though, read at a time when ebooks and audiobooks were not available yet - not to me, at least. (And my English at the time probably wouldn't have been good enough to follow the audiobooks.)
I think I tried the Donna Leon book in German. It was waaaay back in the 1990's, book 3 of the series, iirc.

message 40: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4256 comments Cherie - I love how you set up your series lists with author's name that links to all the books - less space. I am going to borrow that idea 😉

message 41: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks, Jayme. I hope it works for you. I do keep a text copy with titles, but not for all of them.

message 42: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too funny, but I just finished listening to book #32 of the Donna Leon series about Commissario Guido Brunetti but I cannot kill it because I need to pick up the books in-between. I started A Question of Belief, which is #19. The availability was great when I first started the series, but others have picked it up since. The middle books are harder to get than the beginning and ending ones. I just have to be patient. Good thing I love to listen to the narrator.

message 43: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished two more Brunetti stories, Uniform Justice and Doctored Evidence. I am almost finished with Suffer the Little Children. I need to update my paper list.

message 44: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Although it is not considered a series, I finished Five Weeks in a Balloon by Jules Verne, considered the first book in The Extraordinary Voyages. I only had to roll my eyes when a flock of 14 Condors attacked the Victoria and one tore the cover of the outer balloon. I do not think condors fly in flocks, and I cannot imagine them being agressive enough to attack a giant balloon. The other time, was when the explorers encountered and flew over a huge cloud (swarm) of "crickets". Either this was a translation error from locusts or grasshoppers, or it was intentional, but crickets do not fly and they are nocturnal.

message 45: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Through a Glass, Darkly, another Brunetti series book yesterday. I need to update my list again.

Roz | 4470 comments Cherie wrote: "I finished listening to Through a Glass, Darkly, another Brunetti series book yesterday. I need to update my list again."

You really like this series, Cherie. I may have to check it out soon. It looks like they're all available for Kindle through Libby. It's a long series.

message 47: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The books are great to listen to, Roz! The narrator does a great job with his voices and the plots are not so convoluted that it is hard to keep straight with what is going on. There are a few exceptions, but it was because of the similarity of the names that it got confusing. As the stories progress, the seasons change and it is fun to hear how the characters cope with the heat and cold while they are getting around Venice. The characters become like family and I love the Brunetti family interaction. Are you convinced? For me, it is easy listening while I am doing other things and even going to bed listening, with the timer set to 30 minutes.

I haven't read any of them, but maybe I should try one. I have four books left. Two are on hold. I might pick one of the last ones to read instead of listening to it. :0)
