I have read 28 so far, so not much scope for choice. My TBR shelf only has:

The Collector (Fowles)
Faces in the Water (Frame)

Let's wait and see.

message 3: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1664 comments I've got 6 I haven't read which is good for me. Open to any:

-Bouvard and Pecuchet
-A Maggot
-The blindness of the heart
-Simon and the Oaks
-The Stechlin
-I'm not stiller

message 4: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments Wow, I have read 28 of these, including the long ones. I have A Sentimental Education, North & South and The Magus on my TBR shelf - but they are all quite long. I could vote for Faces in the Water because I am interested in everyone’s responses to this N.Z. work.

I’ve read 32. I have on my shelf
The Good Soldier
A Maggot
Hideous Kinky

There are others I am interested in so I’ll be anxiously waiting to see what the randomized and votes will choose.

message 6: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 554 comments I've read 12 of the eligible books, which is a good showing for me. I'm most interested in Cold Comfort Farm, Mary Barton, and Promise at Dawn, but I have a few of the others too.

message 7: by Rosemary (last edited Mar 15, 2023 01:54PM) (new)

Rosemary | 664 comments I've read 29. I think the only one I have on my shelf is Eclipse of the Crescent Moon, which I found used recently.

Of those that have been mentioned, the ones I haven't read are
-The Blindness of the Heart (aka The Blind Side of the Heart)*
-Simon and the Oaks
-The Stechlin
-I'm Not Stiller*

*My library has these two. Simon and the Oaks isn't expensive. The Stechlin has a cheap Kindle edition with a bad review for the translation, or an expensive paperback (in the UK).

I have only read 10 of these. I really enjoyed Simon and the Oaks, Faces in the Water and Hideous Kinky. I don't think I want any more Ford this year. I would like to read more E.M. Forster but that doesn't seem popular with the group.

message 9: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2100 comments I have read 11 and would like to read Faces in the Water and will likely vote for that.
On Amanda's list I have only read I'm not Stiller so I would be open as usual any way the voting goes and actually I would even like to read any of the Forsters.

message 10: by Mette (new)

Mette (therealmette) I've only read 4 (I've only recently decided to start reading the list more seriously). Think I'll vote for I'm Not Stiller.

message 11: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 554 comments I've read all the Forsters except for Passage to India. I'm open to reading that, but I find him a bit dull. I think I am generally not that keen on the 1900-1930 period of British literature.

message 12: by George P. (last edited Mar 21, 2023 01:08PM) (new)

George P. | 697 comments I've read 18 so far (41%), more than my usual proportion. The only one that's in my next 100 to-reads is Neuromancer, but Stiller is only a little farther down- Mette says she voted for that and maybe another member will too, so I'll go with Stiller.
There's about a 2% chance the randomizer will pick Neuromancer also.

I thought it a great read, rated it 5 stars

message 14: by Karen (new)

Karen | 421 comments I've read Tom Jones (excluded), The Great Gatsby, Madame Bovary, Casino Royale, Howards End, A Room With a View, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Hideous Kinky, Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris, Love in the Time of Cholera, Mary Barton, Cranford, North and South and Cold Comfort Farm.

I am most interested in Effi Brest or The Collector.

message 15: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1664 comments Don't know how popular it will be but I'm voting for I'm not Stiller.

Announcing Winners for May 2023
Popular Vote was I'm Not Stiller by Max Frisch. Swiss author. Only a few people voted and only 3 books received votes.
Randomizer chose: The Stechlin by Theodor Fontane. German author.

What will you be reading?

I did not own either of these. I purchased I'm Not Stiller. Audible had it. I will not be reading The Stechlin as it $32.22 at Amazon. Of course I will check to see if it is available elsewhere but I think it is going to be hard to find.

message 18: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2100 comments I have read I’m Not Stiller so I will be looking for the Stechlin at a lower price than $32.22

message 19: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1664 comments This is exciting for me: 2 books I haven't read! I'm not Stiller is available as an ebook on my library app, and just found the Stechlin on kindle for 5$. It has ratings saying the translation is awkward but I read a little bit and it was fine.

message 20: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2100 comments Great. $5 is doable. Thanks Amanda

Unable to find a kindle version when I searched. Could this be in Canada only? I see you’re in Quebec. Is French your primary language? Do you read most of your books in English or French?

message 22: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1664 comments It's an English translation I found (I do read most of my books in English since it's my first language and French is my second), might be exclusive to Canada though?

I just went on Amazon.com instead of amazon.ca to check and it seems to be here:

It's 3.99$ US which checks out for price differences lol. Hope this works for you!

message 23: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2100 comments Kristel, try going to “the kindle store on amazon rather than through their main site page. It is there for $3.99.
If anyone reads German it is widely available and very inexpensive.

message 24: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 554 comments Der Stechlin is in the public domain and there's a free version for Kindle, so I'll give it a go.

I'm not Stiller is £15 on Kindle, and not available in print through amazon. lol Even the German edition is £13 for a paperback. And I'm not sure if he wrote in standardised High German or in Swiss German (which I will not attempt to read).
I might look for a second hand paperback in English. But I'll probably be plenty busy with Stechlin.

message 25: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments I’m Not Stiller is in Open Library. And The Stechlin is on Kindle so I am all set for May!

message 26: by Rosemary (last edited Mar 24, 2023 02:44PM) (new)

Rosemary | 664 comments I will also get The Stechlin for Kindle. Let's see what we think of the translation, given that bad review!

I'm Not Stiller is in my local library. I can also see one on eBay UK for £5.99 inc postage, but I will leave it there :)

Leni, eBay is often cheaper than Amazon for books in the UK (if you are still in Wales!). Also more choice of editions, you can see better what you are getting.

I don't have either and they would be quite hard to get from here in Australia, so I'll skip that month. That would probably help me to finish Clarissa earlier than I expected.

Thank you, I now will be trying to read both

message 29: by George P. (last edited Mar 30, 2023 06:16PM) (new)

George P. | 697 comments I'll read I'm Not Stiller. I've read one book by a Swiss author before (de Botton's On Love). The local libraries don't have it but I can get the ebook from the Oregon library account of my son and read on my kindle.
Betterworldbooks which is a nonprofit charity in the US, has some copies for about $7, free shipping.

message 30: by Mette (new)

Mette (therealmette) I'm probably skipping this month as I already have several other bookclub reads going on and none of those books is very short.
