What would happen if water ran dry in Southern California? This book offers an answer, and it’s not pretty. It is a plot-driven story focused on a group of five teenage main characters. Told from multiple points of view, it examines scarcity and survival, and how quickly civilization could break down. I particularly liked the differences among the characters. Each of the five stands for a typical personality type that acts in accordance with their temperament. Alyssa is altruistic and idealistic, but as the situation worsens, she must make difficult choices. Her ten-year-old brother, Garrett, represents youth and innocence. Their next-door-neighbor, Kelton, is pragmatic and has been steeped in a survivalist mentality. Henry represents the opportunists. Jacqui is creative and tough the quintessential survivor. Each voice is distinct. There are a few plot holes, but overall, it is a fast-paced engrossing read.
