October 2023 Monthly Reading Wrap Up

This month I’ve read a bunch of different genres but totally loved Black Cake and Tom Lake. Fabulous tales told from the present into the bast and back again. Such different times of life and so captivating!

I would've liked more ghost story out of this one than there was. I also think I would've enjoyed it more if the author utilized the "show don't tell" mindset a little more. It's frustrating to me to read the descriptions of people and/or actions and then have them immediately analyzed in an internal monologue.
Graveyard of Lost Children
So spooky! As someone who struggled with a lot of post-partum anxiety after the birth of my daughter, I could relate to the MC on some of the issues she was facing. I worried that I wouldn't like this one since I tend to shy away from body horror (especially involving children/babies) but there really wasn't much here to upset me.
Hopefully I can get back in the swing of things to read more this month!
Sarah, I had the same flash backs to 9th grade English reading Percy Jackson. Not sure if it's only NC that studies Greek Myths in 9th grade, but my class sure did.
Casey, you definitely stayed on point with the spooky for October! Love it!

Bookish People by Susan Coll- This one was just ok. It sells itself on having a cast of quirky characters, which is true, but they are also characters that don’t have much depth outside of their quirks. Many were unlikeable too. The book definitely revolved around the characters therefore there wasn’t much plot which left an ending that felt unresolved since there wasn’t really anything to be resolved.
The Lioness by Chris Bohjalian- This was pretty good. Didn’t feel like much of a mystery or thriller, which is what I was hoping for. There was a good bit of suspense, but it felt like it got a little bogged by all the backstory and political explanations. Speaking of the political explanations I didn’t really understand any of it anyway. Also, just a warning for those that might not like gore; this one is gory and not many characters make it out alive.
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan- I listened to this on Audio and I really liked it! I have never read the Percy Jackson series before and I figured it was about time to dive in. I really liked that the playfulness and childlike behavior of the kids was carried over into this. It really felt very true to the tales I remember of the Greek Gods. I’m excited to continue with the series!
