Grace Meredith (koreantrash) What did you read this week? I read The Diamond as Big as the Ritz, and Other Stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Did you enjoy the book? Yes, yes, YES! It was so much better than The Great Gatsby!

Would you recommend it? I would definitely recommend this to all the people who, like me, read The Great Gatsby and felt sorely disappointed. It's a much better example of Fitzgerald's excellence as a writer.

What was your favorite short story and why? The Lees of Happiness, because it really touched me. The thought of that poor woman tending her paralyzed husband year after year, until he died in his sleep.... :(

Bana AZ (anabana_a) | 414 comments What did you read this week?
The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury

Did you enjoy the book?
Absolutely!

Would you recommend it?
Definitely. Sci-Fi lovers and people who like to dig deeper into a text will enjoy this.

What was your favorite short story and why?
I have to choose? It's so hard! Hm...one of them I guess would be "The Last Night of the World" because it's so unexpectedly calm.

What did you read this week?
The Lottery and Other Stories

Did you enjoy the book?
The stories are awkward and the people are weird. It was well written and paced, but it wasn't the type of short stories I like. So, no.

Would you recommend it?
I recommend only The Lottery if you want to read a weird story with creepy people.

What was your favorite short story and why?
The Lottery because the suspense is very good all along and the characters act pretty normally until the last page.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) What did you read this week?

St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves by Karen Russell

Did you enjoy the book?

Yes, I did. The stories were full of quirky characters which I love!

Would you recommend it?

Yes, to fellow lovers of the weird and quirky.

What was your favorite short story and why?

I loved the concept of the minotaur father taking his family off in a caravan west, "from Children's Reminiscences of the Westward Migration" because it was told realistically even though obviously fantasy and I'm going to go with "ZZ's Sleep-Away Camp for Disordered Dreamers" as a close second because dreams are fascinating.

message 6: by Susan (new)

Susan Hanna | 14 comments What did you read this week?Miss Marple: The Complete Short Storiesby Agatha Christie

Did you enjoy the book? Yes, although I would much prefer a novel to a collection of short stories.

Would you recommend it? yes

What was your favorite short story and why? "Miss Marple Tells a Story" because it emphasized some of the humor of the character of Miss Marple.

Ali Like The Lit Lover, I also read F. Scott Fitzgerald this week!

What did you read this week?
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Other Jazz Age Stories. It is a compilation of his first two short story collections--Flappers and Philosophers (1920) and Tales of the Jazz Age (1922)--in one volume.

Did you enjoy the book?
I loved some stories and hated others, so I think it averages out to an unenthusiastic "It was okay." I much prefer Fitzgerald's novels. He wrote more than a few of these stories in college, and I thought it showed.

Would you recommend it?
For a Fitzgerald fan, one who's interested in his juvenilia, yes. For anyone who has never read him, or who had a bad experience reading him in school, I would cherry pick certain wonderful stories, but I wouldn't recommend the book as a whole.

What was your favorite short story and why?
Again like The Lit Lover, I choose "The Lees of Happiness." Roxanne and Harry were wonderful characters, and I just ached for them.

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments What did you read this week? The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling

Did you enjoy the book? Oh yes, so much!

Would you recommend it? Definitely, to anyone who is a fan of Harry Potter and anyone who loves fairy tales. I like that it helps to add depth to the world of Harry Potter. You can really imagine young witches and wizards being read these stories at bed time, and the comments from Dumbledore are just the icing on the cake. :-)

What was your favorite short story and why? The Tale of the Three Brothers is easily my favourite, even though it's quite short. I can't help but imagine the animation from the film as I read it. Other than that one I quite liked The Warlock's Hairy Heart. It was quite dark and creepy.

EllenZReads What did you read this week?

I read "Contents May Have Shifted" by Pam Houston.

Did you enjoy the book?

Yes, somewhat. I like how the themes of the book were around travel and exploration, but couldn't really relate to the characters in her stories.

Would you recommend it?

Yes, if you like short stories about travel and are a Pam Houston fan.

What was your favorite short story and why?

Didn't have one.

message 10: by Krysta (new)

Krysta (booksaremyfavthing) | 115 comments What did you read this week? Stone Mattress: Nine Tales

Did you enjoy the book? It was okay. I'm not a big fan of short stories.

Would you recommend it? Probably if you like short stories it would be okay. I'm not a fan and so I would not recommend it.

What was your favorite short story and why? Stone Mattress. It was the easiest to get drawn into.

Jessica | 225 comments What did you read this week?Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders

Did you enjoy the book? Would you recommend it? For the most part, no. There were only a handful of stories that peaked my interest, but other than that I found it quite boring.

Would you recommend it? I can't bring myself to recommend it, maybe just pick a couple random stories and see for yourself.

What was your favorite short story and why? Hmm, probably "Sunbird". Although still creepy it is not as creepy as the other stories, and made me wish for more of the past of the main guy. Don't want to spoil who that is as there is a slight twist. A bit slow to start for a short story but well worth it if you are into mythological creatures :)

message 12: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments What did you read this week? The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories

Did you enjoy the book? Not really - I don't feel that it lived up to the hype. /review/show...

Would you recommend it? No.

What was your favorite short story and why? I didn't have one - the fiction was terrible, and the non-fiction essays weren't much better.

message 13: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich2689) | 122 comments What did you read this week? Smoke and Mirrors

Did you enjoy the book? Overall, yes. I didn't think it was fantastic though. I gave it 3 stars.

Would you recommend it? Yes, but I wouldn't recommend all the short stories in it. Some I loved and some I hated.

What was your favorite short story and why? Snow, Glass, Apples because I like the twist on a well-known fairytale. There were other close favorites too: Murder Mysteries, Chivalry, The Price, and We Can Get Them for You Wholesale.

message 14: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 304 comments What did you read this week?
Mixed Magics: Four Tales of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones

Did you enjoy the book? Some of the stories, very much; others, not so much.

Would you recommend it? Yes, of course.

What was your favorite short story and why?Stealer of Souls, because shows a part not so perfect of Cat and his fear of losing his position as sucesor to Chrestomanci.
