It honestly surprises me how many Disney movies are based upon books. I wonder if it would be easier to ask how many Disney movies aren't based upon books. I've only read 26 books on this list...

Another vote here. Bill is right. But, they are very definitely children's books, so you have to read them when in the mood for something playful and sweet. Not when you want to read some serious nonfiction. :-)

I didn't get to read them as a child, but I got to read quite a few children' books due to enablers in this group, and I am happy that I did. My TBR list is growing...

Cool list, thanks!
21 for me, and I'm surprised that some are Disney movies. The Help ?
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln ?

I agree, I never think of those movies as Disney films, although I suppose The Help was distributed by Touchstone.

I think Lincoln (the movie with Daniel Day Lewis) was based on Team of Rivals, and was also a Touchstone movie, but I could be wrong. I am not very good with movies. I don't watch enough.

Great update, and glad you enjoyed Ford County. It was better than I thought it would be when I picked it up.

I am also glad that you liked Leviathan enough to keep going. I didn't get to book 3 yet; but I have it (of course)

I don't think my reading will ever be where it was, but I am not doing too shabby. I am actually reading longer books and enjoying the ride.

I agree about Ford County.

I'm actually really excited about continuing Leviathan. Sometimes a GRC Award series is not to my taste, but I can see this one opening up more and I think I'm going to like where it is headed.

Our lives have different seasons, and we get to enjoy them all. For many years, I didn't read any books at all for pleasure. I was too busy and too stressed out. I can't imagine going back to that, although I know that it is highly unlikely that I will forever continue at my current pace.

I think it is a very solid Grisham book. My favorites are The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town, A Time to Kill, A Time for Mercy, The Firm, The Runaway Jury, and The Pelican Brief. If you've already read those, or they don't appeal, Ford County is a good add. It even has some relationship to A Time to Kill and A Time for Mercy, since they are all set in the same place. :-)

Previously discussed:

Ford County
Winnie-the-Pooh
The House at Pooh Corner
Flawless Execution: Use the Techniques and Systems of America's Fighter Pilots to Perform at Your Peak and Win the Battles of the Business World
When We Were Very Young
Now We Are Six
Assistant to the Villain
In the Lives of Puppets
The Island
The Patchwork Girl of Oz

Recently finished:

The God of All Comfort - I finally finished this book that had been given to me in 2010. I put it off for years until I was in the right mood for it and I am glad that I did. It's a book written by a Quaker woman and her understanding of who God is. While I didn't agree with everything, I found it to be a very comforting book. I don't think non-Christians would get much out of it, but I would recommend it for some Christians. The first publication date was in 1953 and it definitely reads like a book of that time period. 4 stars

Feedback - This is the final book in the Newsflesh trilogy (a good trilogy always has at least four books!). It is much of the same events from Feed, just from journalists on the other side of the political campaign. I liked it, but it wasn't as good as Feed. We already knew what was going to happen and while this did illuminate additional conspiracies, there was a little "been there, done that" feel to the book. 3 stars

The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store - I've been wanting to read a book by James McBride and everyone was talking about this one. I liked it. However, there are a lot of characters and you really have to pay attention to the details. The story starts out with a mystery, but it grows into more than that. Racial issues and the disparate impact of disabilities as a result of where you are in society are the center of the book, and in the end, cause the mystery to be quite anticlimactic. I liked the book, but I did not love it. 3 stars

Son - This was the final book in The Giver quartet, and I liked how this book tied the other three books together, but I was disappointed by the ending. I can't say too much without spoiling it, but I will say that I wanted more from the series. 3 stars

The Canterville Ghost - A short play by Oscar Wilde. It's a fun ghost story. An American family comes to live at an English manor house that is haunted by a ghost. The family, especially the twin boys, decide to turn the tables on the ghost. It's funny. And short. I did the audio, and the cast was great. 3 stars.

Burned - This is the seventh book in the Fever series. I was really disappointed by the sixth book, Iced, but this one was a little better. I just don't like any of the characters and I feel that there are better faery stories out there also. 2 stars

Happy Place - I buddy read this book with Lindsey and we both liked it. However, we both preferred Book Lovers to this one. This one is about a long term group of friends and there was so much miscommunication between all of them that I wanted to shake them all. 3 stars

Before We Say Goodbye - This is the fourth book in the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series, and I have to say that I may have enjoyed this installment the most, perhaps because they explained some things that had been bugging me. Also, I read the first three books as a single volume and I think twelve was too many trips to the coffee shop for me. Four was better. 3 stars

Currently reading:

2010: Odyssey Two - This is a sequel to the movie, so there are some inconsistencies between this sequel and the first book. I read the book, and haven't watched the movie. That said, I think this started better than the previous book. It reads slow, but I'm still reading it.

Behemoth - This is the second book in the Leviathan trilogy (a real three book trilogy!!) and I'm really enjoying it. It's a steampunk book about an alternate history for WW1, where the British are the "Darwinists" who breed and fabricate living creatures and the Germans are the "Clankers" who use war machines. The second book is more interesting than the first one.

It's so hard. We all have various ways we try to corral all of our series books, but it seems impossible.

I can't stop myself from starting new series, (14 so far this year!!)
so what is currently working for me is to tell myself that I should finish every new series I start. I try to read the next book in the series the following month, or at least the month after. Unfortunately, that just means I'm keeping up with current series, so I do try to finish out at least one of the "older" series every year. You'd think I'd make some progress with that strategy, but I really am not. I still have over 100 series on the go.

However, the problem with my strategy is now I can't even remember what happened in some of the older series...

but at least this stops me from starting new series that I'm not making any progress on.

The older ones will just have to live out there until I get back to them. :-)

Lea (leaspot) | 3458 comments Ioana wrote: "I will get the audiobook soon, will that be too hard to follow?"

So...you'll have to see what you think. The majority seem to love the narration, the narrator does use different voices to distinguish between characters. However, unfortunately, some of the voices were really hard for me to understand, so I found myself having to re-listen to certain scenes in order to better understand what happened. I knew who was talking, but I couldn't figure out what was being said. I hope you have a better experience than I did - most people do! :-)

I know, I need to do the same thing with my 12+4.

One year my 12+4 was one book from 16 series, but that didn't work well for me, because once I'm into a series, I want to keep reading it. Once it was 12 books in the same series, and that didn't work well for me either, I wanted to read everything but that series. I think I need to stick with 2-4 books in each series on my list - I'm too moody for anything else.

I once made a rule that I'd only start a series once I've finished two open series, but that was a mistake. It just made me rebellious. Too many rules. I blame about 30 of my open series on that rule. :-) :-) :-)

Lea (leaspot) | 3458 comments August Mid Month Report

Books Read: 8 books this month and 113 year to date. 38,625 pages.

Books from Filling in the Gaps: 58/100; 2022 Books 1/4, 2023 Books 5/12, 2024 Books 52/84

Books from 12+4 Challenge: 15/16

Recently finished:

Behemoth - This is the second book in the Leviathan trilogy, which is a steampunk book about an alternate history for WW1, where the British are the "Darwinists" who breed and fabricate living creatures and the Germans are the "Clankers" who use war machines. I enjoyed this book much better than the first book, and am looking forward to reading Goliath soon. 4 stars

The Passengers - This was my first book by John Marrs, and now I want to read more! The book is a thriller about eight self driving cars that are hacked and set on a collision course. However, it is also about so much more. The hacker claims he might spare one passenger; how do you pick which one to save? It's not heavy on the science and you will have some quibbles, but if you are able to lay those aside, you're in for one wild ride. Will I ride in a driverless car in the future? Yes...but cautiously. 4 stars.

Saga, Volume 10 - Something keeps drawing me back to this graphic novel series, even though I have a lot of quibbles. It's good and I'm kind of curious what happens, but if it were a longer book or a harder read, I'd tap out. 2 stars.

2010: Odyssey Two - This is a sequel to the movie, so there are some inconsistencies between this sequel and the first book. I read the book, and haven't watched the movie. The book was a really slow read for me. I enjoyed the beginning more than the first book, but the middle dragged here for me. I had to force myself to continue, but the ending was again pretty good. I will be reading the sequel. 3 stars.

Little Wizard Stories of Oz - Four short stories set in the land of Oz. I'm not always a fan of short stories, but these were kind of fun. 3 stars.

The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy: The Shocking Inside Story - This was a story about a horrific murderer, but what made it so interesting was the relationship between the author and the murderer. I had heard that they used to volunteer together, but I didn't realize that they were more than passing acquaintances. The relationship between the author and Ted Bundy is the reason to read the book. It also creates a situation where I'm unsure if the author was 1) vacillating back and forth on whether he was guilty as she seems to be in her book and this is a genuine portrayal or 2) she was caught in his thrall then and is now trying to appear like she wasn't by also including things she did to help the police and unsubstantiated conversations with him regarding her doubt or 3) she soon suspected he must be guilty, but was concerned about how a reader might think she used their relationship to write this book and profit off of it, so she had to continuously play up their close relationship. At the end of the book, and four afterwards, I still don't know which one it is. That's what makes this a very interesting book. 4 stars.

Bridge to Terabithia - You guys. I don't know how I haven't read this book already. This was my first book by Katherine Paterson. It's about two fifth grade friends - Jess and Leslie - and their love of running. It's a Newberry winner, and I can see why. It's not perfect, but it is really good. My audiobook included an interview with the author and her son, and learning the story of what this was based upon was really thought provoking. 4 stars.

Return to the Hundred Acre Wood - The Milne family agreed to this sequel of the Pooh books, and I have to say, for the most part, I thought he did a very good job. He did try to tie together this story from the other stories, and I felt like most of his character depictions were pretty good. It does not reach the level of the first two books for me, but it was sweet. I rounded up to 4 stars.

Currently reading:

Bleak House - This book is over 1,017 pages, so I will be reading this for a long time. So far, it's another orphan story the Victorian authors are so fond of. I'm about 7% in.

Feverborn - Book 8 in the Fever series. I can't really say anything about the plot, since it will probably spoil other books in the series, but this is some sort of urban fantasy/paranormal romance type of book. Basically, the characters learn that the Celtic myths regarding the faeries were not all made up. I'm about 35% in.

Ooohh, this has been on my TBR forever. I think I actually own it, are you saying I should get to it now?

There have been movies based on The Bridge to Terabithia. The one that I watched (1985) was very emotional. Not sure if it was a made-for-TV movie, but it was excellent as I recall. Very touching and emotional. I've not read the book, although I had a copy for the longest time... I'm not sure I could.

I agree with you about Saga. Just the right size to keep your interest going. I'm really enjoying it. Good luck the rest of the month.

I think it is a wonderful book and I do think you'll enjoy it. I will warn you, it broke my heart in two and I may never recover from reading this book.

I was going to watch the movie, but I'm not sure I can right now. Maybe after a few years, when I have an entire box of tissues close at hand, I will consider it.

I was going to abandon Saga, but I am glad I decided to read Volume 10. I hadn't read very many graphic novels this year, and didn't want to start a new series. I now need to lay my hands on Volume 11. :-)

I admit, I love books that break my heart. I had a lot of meh books this year that did not touch me. I'm ready to feel again.
