The beginning of this book was fantastic. Something so horrifying about being shipwrecked out in space.

@ Marc,

There's not really a new 'list'. The list is all the books on our bookshelf. Next year's challenge is set up already though. You can check it out here: /topic/show/....

Some great reads ahead for you, Marc!

Marc, we don't post any lists here. You can access the bookshelf here:

/group/books...

or our Google Spreadsheet here:

/topic/show/...

And then you are free to pick as many as you'd like! The only caveat for the RATB series is that it be a book from the backlist or the current year's winners

We do pick re-reads together, the schedule for that is here:

\

This is member-generated three months at a time, so please help us pick!

message 260: by Kaia (new)

Kaia | 578 comments Try as I might, I was not able to end on a prime number, but I did exceed my goal of 17 books by quite a few - I ended up reading 30 in total! My favorites were (in no particular order):

A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge
The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K Le Guin
The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold
The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo
Among Others by Jo Walton
The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
Hyperion by Dan Simmons
Dreamsnake by Vonda McIntyre
Alphabet of Thorn by Patricia McKillip
Dawn by Octavia Butler
The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie
Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky
The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord

DivaDiane SM | 3633 comments I’m calling it for the year. I achieved my low-bar goal of 11, quite by accident. I read only one of the books I had declared I would. Here’s the list of the ones I did read:

1. The Terraformers
2. My Real Children
3. The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi
4. Ship of Magic (reread)
5. Gideon the Ninth
6. The Path of Thorns
7. Gods, Monsters, and the Lucky Peach
8. The Tusks of Extinction
9. Strange the Dreamer
10. Lonely Castle in the Mirror
11. Remarkably Bright Creatures

I periodically look at that list (not the spreadsheet, I should check that out!), mainly to see if I inadvertently read something mid-year that turned out to also be on the list. I must have seen the newly added books and didn't realize it!

I'll undoubtedly do that again, but I guess right now, it's those 10 books I listed earlier!

message 263: by Steve (new)

Steve Fiori (stevefiori) | 52 comments Oop, only read 5 out of 10 of the bookshelf books this year (and 16 out of 20 of the main challenge) - though have already put the others I've not read on the shelf I've earmarked for the 2025 challenge. Here's what I did read from the group bookshelf this year:

His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett (a re-read)
Nettle & Bone by T Kingfisher
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 612 comments Whether I manage to complete Ancillary Mercy before midnight (unlikely) or not, I'll finish the year with either 9 or 10 books from the group shelf. So the challenge is nearly but not quite complete.

message 265: by Olga (new)

Olga Yolgina | 589 comments I read 48 books out of my goal of 30 and I feel very proud of myself :)
Looking forward to the new 2025 with SFFBC Shelf!

message 266: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 1259 comments Well I did not hit my 25, I am on the 20th right now, A Natural History of Dragons. But 20 is not a *tragedy.* :).
I will blame the shortfall on Nicholas Nickleby, which took up much more time than I expected, and also my IRL group changed from 1 to 2 books per month. So I ended up re-reading some titles so I would be able to discuss them with group. Not that I really mind re-reading Ursula K Le Guin or James Tiptree Jr.

I have several of the recent group picks ready to go.

message 267: by Cheryl L (new)

Cheryl L | 404 comments I didn't think I had read that many books off of the shelf this year, but I hit 24 first-time reads and 4 rereads. I am also sad it's not a prime number, but it's unlikely I will finish another book before midnight.

My favorites from the shelf in 2024 in no particular order:
Semiosis
Piranesi
The Word for World Is Forest
Too Like the Lightning
Annihilation

message 268: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 1259 comments If I counted Re-reads I would have hit 25, but

I don't (personally) for this challenge, because I am trying to Read All the Books!
It was interesting though to experience again

The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia
Dune
The Left Hand of Darkness
The Martian Chronicles
An Unkindness of Ghosts
The Word for World Is Forest

Also, Thank You to Anna and other moderators who do extra work to run the Re-read program. Because that's how I managed
A Scanner Darkly
Infernal Devices
His Majesty's Dragon
A Natural History of Dragons

Marc Towersap (marct22) | 340 comments book 1 off crossed off!
Just finished Katherine Addison's The Goblin Emperor!

now on to book 2
Becky Chambers' A Closed and Common Orbit.

I'll slow down after that, got other books not on this challenge to complete!

message 273: by Marc (new)

Marc Towersap (marct22) | 340 comments I did finish both Becky Chambers' A Closed and Common Orbit and NK Jemison's One hundred thousand kingdoms.

Finished Becky's entire series, and on book 3 of NK Jemison's inheritance trilogy.
