FAH Reading Challenge discussion
Introductions and FAH Talk

1) I live in Italy, I'm in Puglia (the heel of the Italian boot)
2) first sketch I have seen was "WTF is Brexit?" because a friend send it to me ("Since you love Ireland, they're Irish) - didn't follow them then, but in November 2019 when I watched "Paper bag hats"
3) Favourite genres: fantasy (I am becoming less interested in sagas) and historical - recently I found myself into mythological re-telling
Favourite sketch... ooh, several, hard to choose one... I like Nutrition in Therapy, a lot of those made during lockdown - they showed how creative they are.
I like to read different things, fantasy yes, mysteries sure... historical too - though, I prefer to read some authors from those genres rather than books of authors I don't know... guilty pleasure: romance ;)

Donatella "I live in Italy" They have not performed in Italy yet, have they?

Glad I'm not alone XD

2) First FAH sketch I remember seeing: Either the RISK sketch or the Guess which country you are sketch, then one about Brexit and then the dating game about the Irish question, I think.
3) Favourite sketches / videos (just to name a few): also the ones above
4) Genre preferences: Now literary fiction and poetry above all, poetry esp from Flanders and young poets.
English speaking favourite writers: Claire Keegan (Ireland), Doireann Ni Ghriofa (Ireland), Max Porter (UK), Ka(t)e Tempest (UK), Jane Austen (UK), Carson McCullers (US), Margaret Atwood (Canada), ...
I used to read a lot of Scandinavian (esp. Swedish) thrillers/detectives until about a couple of years ago. Favourite writers from Scandinavia: Henning Mankell, Arne Dahl, Stieg Larsson (NOT Lagercrantz), Roslund & Hellström, Hakan Nesser, Jussi Adler-Olsen, ....
During my secondary school, I was also interested in and read various British crime novels/series. (Colin Dexter's Insp. Morse, Ruth Rendell, Agatha Christie, Patricia Highsmith, ...)
I read in Dutch, English, French and sometimes in German and in Swedish. When I speak, I mix a lot of expressions. 😜
One of my French favourite writers is Philippe Claudel.
Further interests: various comedians, literature events, music concerts, sometimes art exhibitions and some theatre

My first FAH sketch may have been about the Irish language. At the time, I was teaching it. :)
Favorite sketches include anything with Anne/Oisin or Anne McCormack, but Maths Quarantine is probably the biggest guilty pleasure.
I’ll read anything, but often struggle with sci fi. If something piques my interest, I’ll go on a research bender and obsess for a few months. Life is too short to be able to learn enough or read all the good books. :)
This reading challenge and group was such a great idea. I’m really excited. It’s great to meet everyone! :))

Oh, one of my friend is a New Yorker who now lives in Ireland (Dublin) ^_^

I get the same way researching topics that interest me.

Which prompt(s) on the challenge are you finding difficult?
(Ask for recommendations if you want or just share.)

Read a book you think Hog would recommend - I may have to re- watch some Patreon live streams to get ideas. I know what I would recommend to Foil & Arms, but Hog is challenging.
Read a book with a room of the house on the cover - I've looked at all the covers on my TBR list and I can't find anything appropriate.

I'm impressed and envious that you can read so many languages. What a wonderful perspective you must get.

I have no idea but I will try to find something like a fantasy with a funny note - also, it will probably one of the last prompt I'll do

I agree! :))

We know a bit more about Arms and Foil's reading habits, but alas, no insight to Hog's literary likings.

If I see anyone with a book or recommend it, I like to look it up. FOMO or ocd? :)).
Bee Sting isn’t helping me figure out Foils tastes. Maybe he knows the author? It’s 650 pages. 😳. It’s very long and doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Has anyone read it?
This reading challenge has really been a lot of fun so far! 😄

That's so cool that you talked to them about reading.
Did it take them long to give their answers?
I've been thinking about something D&D related as a book Hog would recommend.

650 pages? No wonder he carried the book around so long that Arms slagged him.
For a book Foil would recommend, I'm thinking about something related to the environment.

I liked it - I have read something else from Ishiguro, I find it... delicate? Can't find a better word for his writing

I did it during the M&G (told them there was a Reading Challenge based on their sketch/them), so it had to be a little bit quick - Foil gave the answer straight away, Arms had to think about it and Hog started laughing and gave immediately his answer... The more I think about it, the more I am sure he was trolling XD

I'm not sure why, but I always imagine Hog reading the least of the three, Arms the most and Foil in between.

Thanks.

thank you very much Melissa for putting the challenge up there ^_^

Foil, Arms and Hog in Europe: 'We never thought that we’d be playing these places'

I got tickets for the shows in November in LA and San Diego and for the spring show in Toronto, Canada.

Indeed Donatella, Edinburgh is very expensive, certainly during the summer and August especially because quite some festivals are happening there the whole month.
You do know there is the Edinburgh International Book Festival also in August? I have been in Edinburgh in the summer of 2022, but I would only like to go back to Edinburgh once during another month, I think to see more of the city and the surroundings.
I have stopped following the Book Festival over a sponsorship issue regarding the Israel - Palestine crisis as well as the ridiculous press communique by the festival organizers about that in fact. BUT if you are there anyway, I do hope you will take the chance of seeing some international acclaimed writers there really. Have great fun!

I am not able to plan anything at the moment, but I will be happy to hear your gig stories, if you want to share them
before I forget, I was thinking of doing the challenge again next year - though, I have trouble in organizing and keep organizing thing, so I have searched how a reading challenge could go without prompts/suggestions. There are reading challenge where you don't have them, people just need to follow the main theme - in our case FAH. So, I was thinking, for next year: read books and connect them to any FAH sketch? Readers will find a connection.

Donatella - it will be cool to see the changes the show goes through over your three nights in Edinburgh.
I looked into going to Edinburgh for both the book and the fringe festivals, but I couldn't manage it this year. (I wonder what FAH will do for Edinburgh in 2025. Skittish looks like a two year tour, and with Hogwash they were only in Edinburgh for a week in 2023.)

❤️

I will try to think about it! ;-)

How was the show in Amsterdam?

I gave an intro about myself in my "progress" post, but I'll add the following:
1) I live in the USA in New York State, less than a mile from the Canadian border.
2) First FAH sketch I remember seeing: It was either "Quarantine Maths Class Disaster" or "Quarantine Catholic Confession".
3) Favourite sketches / videos (just to name a few): "When You're Addicted To Tea", "Why the Hell did Lockdown have to End?" & "How to Be a Lad" (and so many more)
4) Genre preferences: Historical mysteries (usually the time period "between the wars")
Please share something about yourself!
