It’s time for the next Monthly Reading Wrap Up! This Month I Read

Who Moved My Cheese? by Dr. Spencer Johnson- I read this for a work related professional development exercise. It reads very corporate propaganda and is outdated in a lot of ways, so I don’t necessarily recommend it in that sense. However, the group discussion we had about the text was good and I got a lot more from that than from reading the book itself.

Rivals by Katherine McGee- Ok, I do enjoy this series; but man was this one a soap opera. I have to say I didn’t like Beatrice much in this book. Her plot made minimal sense and her blow up fight with Teddy made no sense. Sam’s storyline of Marshall having to give up his title for her made sense, however the solution seemed pretty easy to me? I mean Samantha is the heir to the throne, but Jefferson can take that on until Beatrice has children. I understand needing to think about it and weigh pros and cons and have serious discussions about it, but this didn’t even occur to her until close to the end of the book? I really liked Nina and Daphne’s storyline. I loved seeing Daphne get more depth and I felt like I understood her better. That regression at the end really stung though and I hope she can rebound her growth in the last book. Long story short, this is definitely my least favorite of the series so far and it really amped up the drama factor. I’ll still tune in for the last one though.

Beach Read by Emily Henry- I really liked this one. A fun, comforting, contemporary romance. The main character, January, is done well and fleshed out. She ends up at a lake house owned by her Dad that she didn’t even know about after finding out that her Dad had a mistress at his funeral. She is trying to come to terms with not being about to be the sunshine in life anymore and feeling like she was living a lie. I would have liked more resolution as a whole from this story line, especially in terms of her relationship with her mom. Gus is dealing with his own baggage and they mutually engage in a writing bet against each other as they work through their issues, of course falling in love along the way. Gus didn’t seem as well fleshed out, but I liked the chemistry between him and January. Every single minor/background character was nothing but a flat one trick pony which wasn’t great but it didn’t ruin anything. Overall still good writing and an enjoyable story. Emily Henry is one of my favorites lately.

It was a fun exploration of what happened after Frankenstein. I really enjoyed it.

The Weight of Blood
I wholeheartedly recommend listening to the audiobook production of this book. It was masterfully crafted and I got lost in it so easily. It felt like I was watching a movie.

House of Earth and Blood
I did a buddy read on this one and it was one of the first times I've done that. It was super fun sharing reactions with each other in real-time.

Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery
There were times that this one lost me. I really enjoyed it by the end. The only regret I have was that I listened to the audiobook and missed out on the illustrations that were included in the print version. I looked them up afterwards, though.

Ariadne
I wasn't super impressed with this one. It was okay. I think I expected more from the story than the mysteriousness of Ariadne's life on the island and her not really seeking anything more than being a mother. Don't get me wrong, that's a completely noble pursuit and I myself would love to simply be a mom and work the land, but the premise of the book made me think that she'd be doing more than that.

Episode Thirteen
It went from being something paranormal to exploring otherworldly beings and astral ascension. It lost me at the end. I was expecting ghosts and this was not ghosts.

House of Sky and Breath
This was also a buddy read. Not really anything remarkable to say here. It was good haha!

The Dead Take the A Train
I had really high hopes for this. I did not like it. I gave it three stars at the end because I think if I tried again I may like it better.

House of Flame and Shadow
The ending of this book felt like a Marvel movie. It was all over the place. I loved it, but goodness it feels like this series should be broken up into more than just three books.

Belladonna
I liked this one. It was a fun mix of romance, fantasy, and mystery. i'll probably read the next one too.

Stolen Tongues
I like the sort of folklore meets modern day feeling of this book. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes cryptids.

I read a lot this month, but it's because I was on a reading challenge. Our team ended up winning. My mind needs a break for a bit.
