Jessi | 7 comments This book has some of the most beautiful writing in it. I can actually feel the love of nature and the profound way Marie Laure views the world. She’s definitely my favorite point of view in this book.

Eldana | 3 comments I am still reading it, but this book is something else. It's like Doerr reached into my soul and just shook it up. The way he describes everything, from Marie-Laure navigating her blindness to Werner's struggles in Nazi Germany, it's just so vivid and real. Total goosebumps. It's one of those books that sticks with you, you know?

Agree! The writing is incredibly beautiful

Julie Grindal (julesgrin) | 99 comments Has anyone read other books by this Author? I am curious if his writing in all novels is so deep and touching that you can feel as if you truly know the characters.

Jessi | 7 comments One of my favorite things about this is the bond between Marie Laure and Daniel. He devotes his life to making his daughter’s life easier and more fulfilling. He teaches her how to navigate the city and builds a miniature model of the city so she can feel the world in her hands. Marie Laure is resilient and a truly an inspiring character for me. She is the heart and soul of this story.

I also enjoyed Werner’s story as well. He’s a brilliant boy who’s curious about how machines work and doesn’t care about glory and the propaganda that’s being taught to the kids. He wants to use his talents for something good. I think in a different time he would have been a famous scientist. His relationship with his sister Jutta is very touching.

I have not but I’ve had Cloud Cuckoo Land on my list for a while. I need to read it. I do love the writing in this one.

Jessi | 7 comments Cloud Cuckoo Land is also a great one from Doerr! It has a lot more characters in it and the story spans quite a few genres , history , sci fi , thriller. I want to read The Shell Collector since I heard Marie Laure was based on a character there I think .

Pat of Rocks | 37 comments I'm so glad to hear that about Cloud Cuckoo Land. I quickly added that on my TBR list after finishing. If Doerr keeps his writing style consistent, I'm confident I'll enjoy it as well.

Julie Grindal (julesgrin) | 99 comments I had not heard that The Shell Collector had the Mail Laure character in it. I’m adding it to my TBR list now! I have a hold on Cloud Cuckoo Land with the library. I have 3 different library cards and the soonest available is “several months. For a book a few years old that is surprising. I have read that it is a difficult read. I will need to ensure I’m in focus mode to begin that reading journey.

Kristen Fort | 85 comments I'm now at p. 217. I agree that Doerr's use of language is beautiful. Marie-Laure's love of the natural world through her other senses is wonderfully captured, and I like how she and Etienne are forming a bond as he reads to her from Darwin's travels.

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 154 comments I've listened to the audiobook, and that's where I experienced the beautiful language. Also loved the Netflix mini-series. Reading your comments here is prompting me to pick up the actual book so I can experience it all again. Alas, so many titles on the TBR pile.

This book is taking me a while....but that's ok as it's written so beautifully.

Kristen Fort | 85 comments I am into the groove of reading - and one heartbreak so far. (view spoiler)

David Hesson | 11 comments I recommend this book to so many people. The use of language is so beautiful but it also has such strong character development.
