Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. (view spoiler)[I love the idea that literature is the most important faculty ever. It is def a fantasy setting, but still... dreaming can be so good!
But it is not so good that women can't attend that. I so hate sexism!!

I am feeling sorry for Effy, a lot. Especially because of her mother! But I am not so sure I like her. I hope things will change!
And I wasn't expecting the manor to be so ruinous!! It sounds like a ghastly and insalubrious place to live in! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I like Preston and I like the literary investigation. It sounds like a woman wrote the book, and I would say the widow is the most probable "culprit" but I am worried because we don't know if she is even real! Nobody has seen her or talked with her.
And Ianto is acting mighty strange! And Effy too. They are acting like nothing happened but... It's not normal!! Not normal at all! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ The portrait of a literature student is amazingly well done and there is thought behind it and knowledge too, but the architecture one is poorly done. It is astounding how bad it is.
Ianto is stranger and stranger but Effy and Preston took it in stride like nothing of significance happened. It is so wrong! And so maddening!

(view spoiler)[I am sorry, but I didn't really enjoy this book. I didn't like Effy, I didn't like the story, I didn't like all the lecherous men, I didn't like that a lot of things that are no normal by any standard happen and they jut do nothing about them, I didn't like that there is so much imbalance between the literature works and the architecture one (and I think that I would be more mad about it if I was an architect), and so on...
There are some good things, sure. I liked Preston a lot, I liked the literary investigation and the gothic atmosphere. But this is sadly not enough (hide spoiler)]

I feel like it hinted that she knew about it but the author was trying to leave it open for the reader to guess. Not the best way to do it, but still enjoyed the book.

I started the audiobook over the weekend but I was not focusing on it and I definitely missed some important things. I need to go back and figure out what I missed but I'm not very invested in this so I don't really want to.

It's kind of one of those books that you need to pay attention to. I read the ebook and liked that. Usually I save audiobooks for when I don't have to pay as much attention to the book.

Chapters 1-5
(view spoiler)[ Rereading the beginning was helpful. I thought I had been focusing on it but clearly not. Once I read the first three chapters I was able to jump back in and get it. I don't like how prejudiced Effy is against Argantian's and Preston I hope part of her journey is overcoming that as it's not a good look. This house is creepy and I'm very interested in the Fair Folk / Fairy King, hoping we learn more about that soon. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ How are these kids so dumb, it’s obviously his daughter and she wrote it / married him and he took the credit. Stop looking at the men, it’s none of them. This storm is really something, wow. I’m glad they talked about what happened with Master Corbenic and she’s starting to understand that it’s not her fault. (hide spoiler)]
