They were sisters and they would last past the end of time.
Sam and her sister, Elena, dream of another life. On the island off the coast of Washington where they were born and raised, they and their mother struggle to survive. Sam works long days on the ferry that delivers wealthy mainlanders to their vacation homes while Elena bartends at the local golf club, but even together they can’t earn enough to get by, stirring their frustration about the limits that shape their existence.
Then one night on the boat, Sam spots a bear swimming the dark waters of the channel. Where is it going? What does it want? When the bear turns up by their home, Sam, terrified, is more convinced than ever that it’s time to leave the island. But Elena responds differently to the massive beast. Enchanted by its presence, she throws into doubt the plan to escape and puts their long-held dream in danger.
A story about the bonds of sisterhood and the mysteries of the animals that live among us and within us Bear is a propulsive, mythical, rich novel from one of the most acclaimed young writers in America.
(view spoiler)[ wow, I can't even imagine opening the door to a bear interesting how Sam is relating this to their life - giving it more of a legend telling because they are upset and sad and feel stuck - but feeling guilty that they are stuck because their mother is dying.
Elena's response to the bear is getting worrying though. why is she not reporting it? and is so excited to see it? also, is she out walking with Danny and the dog? hmmm (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ wow, I'm with the younger sister. The terror I would feel - I would barely be able to keep my feet there. I know the older sister is sad that their mom is dying and feeling like she doesn't have control over her life - but wild life is WILD!
I worry she's going to be hurt or someone else is and the older sister's interactions with the bear is going to get the bear killed (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ oh no. there mom passing was so sad but wow, the little sister was definitely living in a fantasy world if she didn't know the financial situation was that bad.
We know the bear is finding food - now he's eating things left by neighbors - but what now? now she can't leave and her sister is only making the bear more dangerous (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ wow, I figured someone would be hurt - but I never thought they would actually kill off the sister - although I think this is realistic. the sister was lucky it hadn't killed her yet and she was making him more and more dangerous.
when her sister told her to just leave - to just move out - my heart broke for her.
I liked the ending - I was glad she went with Ben and decided to try her hand at living and fulfilling her own dreams (hide spoiler)]
