In the opening scene, a nine-year-old boy runs from an unknown danger and throws himself into the ocean. He is followed by a man. Twenty years later, his sister Amanda wants to find out what happened to him. She meets Larry, retired police officer and widower. They form a friendship and begin an unofficial investigation, which leads to uncovering a sad story and puts the duo into peril.
I picked up this book on the strength of two others I have read (The Child Finder and The Enchanted). I do not usually read thrillers, but Denfeld has an engaging writing style. I found the first half more appealing than the second. The characters are interesting, especially Amanda, who appears to be on the autism spectrum. She takes care of a polar bear in an Oregon zoo, and this animal connection is one of the highlights. I also enjoyed the friendship between Larry and Amanda. A major element involves child abuse, which is a topic I try to avoid. Regular readers of thrillers will probably enjoy this one more than I did.
