This begins a group discussion of our Modern book selection, Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, nominated by Andi.
Here you can comment, without spoilers, on any aspects of the book, either before, during, or after reading it.

Zeljka | 470 comments I'm still not sure whether to read it or not. Can anyone give opinion on the book to help me decide?🙂 I don't like DNF-ing:-(

Ali | 138 comments So far I can't help but laugh every time I see my own name on the pages XD
I don't encounter main characters I would share name with too often.

message 7: by Inga (new)

Inga | 14 comments I have already finished it, and I absolutely loved it. I loved it so much that I went ahead and read the entire trilogy. Maybe it’s because this is one of my first fantasy books, and I might have been a fantasy book fan all along. I can highly recommend it to anyone still deciding whether to read it, and I’d be happy to start a discussion about the book!

Zeljka | 470 comments Thnx Inga, I guess I'll give it a go. I loved your review 🙂

Aura Rose | 18 comments Shadow and Bone has been on my tbr for a looong while. I've already read the Six of Crows duology, which is set in the same universe, and absolutely loved it. I'll see if I can get the book at my local library.

I am glad to hear that duology is also great. I have already bought the books, willing to read them this year as well!

I'm reading this YA fantasy with some trepidation, on the lookout for teeny-bopper love problems. I'm half-way done and so far, so good.

You definitely should!!! The worldbuilding and characters are so good!!! The duology is a bit more 'stand-alone' (it's set in the same world, but the plot doesn't really impact what Shadow and Bone), but it'll add a lot more depth to the world.

Aura Rose | 18 comments Also: the Netflix Shadow and Bone series is pretty good in my opinion. The first season adapts Shadow and Bone & serves as a prequel to Six of Crows (there aren't any spoilers for that one, I believe).

Nice! I am actually glad to hear that the duology is a separate story. I loved the trilogy but the story seemed pretty complete at the end of the third book, in my point of view:)

I want to watch the series, but only after I finish the books. I prefer not to have any pre-existing visualization of the characters. I experienced this with the Harry Potter books—when I read a book after watching the movie, I couldn't help but picture the actors' faces as the characters while reading...

message 17: by Ali (new)

Ali | 138 comments The series is really good. I say it as someone who can never finish any series.

When it comes to the Crows, I'd rate the actors around 78% close to my imagination. From Shadow and Bone, so far (I'm not very far) it looks like only the Darkling was chosen to be book-accurate, but their casting choices do make sense to me (they might have gotten more storyline out of that, though)

emma | 2 comments I first read Shadow and Bone in 2022 and remember being completely obsessed. Then I finally got around to Six of Crows last December, and it just hit differently. Now, rereading S&B, I still love it, but I can tell it’s meant for a younger audience—which makes sense because I’ve grown too. So if you’re loving this book and its world, SOC might be worth checking out!
