Karen Witzler (kewitzler) | 173 comments The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is horror/mystery/literary and historical fiction.

I learned about the sci-fi/mystery hybrid The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal over on a different reading challenge.

Denise | 58 comments Maybe I'll also read The Historian

Cynthia Parkhill (cynthia_m_parkhill) | 13 comments TJ Klune is an author whose books can fit in multiple genres. Right now I'm reading Under the Whispering Door, which deals with the afterlife and includes elements of romance, found family, and personal redemption. Some of Klune's other books could also apply in this category: The House in the Cerulean Sea (found-family, fantasy, romance), Somewhere Beyond the Sea (romance, found-family, fantasy, political allegory), How to Be a Normal Person and How to Be a Movie Star (romance and laugh-out-loud humor).

Elizabeth (elizabethlk) | 359 comments I love stuff that blends genres in new and fun ways, so I'm looking forward to this task. I would totally recommend Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell (cozy fantasy, romance, and horror), Even Though I Knew the End by C.L. Polk (historical fiction, fantasy, crime thriller, romance), Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas (historical fiction/western, horror, romance), The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin (horror, domestic thriller, sci-fi), and Strangers by David Alexander Robertson (SFF and mystery).

I'll especially be keeping my eyes out for horror blends, and historical horror in particular since I really love that stuff and have been wanting to do more, but I'm also interested in seeing any unexpected genre blend suggestions. Some of the ones I'm considering right now are The Hunger by Alma Katsu, The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson, The Scarlet Alchemist by Kylie Lee Baker, A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal, The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas, A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark, The Tea Master and the Detective by Aliette de Bodard, and The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher.

Audra (themonkeygirl) | 101 comments I'm reading The Sun Down Motel for this one.

Carly Really Very Normal (seullybwillikers) | 43 comments I think I'm going to go with "The Paradox Hotel" by Rob Hart for this one.

message 9: by Becky (new)

Becky | 4 comments Reading An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole a blend of Romance and Mystery .

This book I started but never finished. So trying to get all my DNF books actually finished using the Book Riot Challenge this year.

message 10: by Erin (new)

Erin (tangential1) | 47 comments I love this category so much! I have quite a few books in my to-read that fit in.

In addition to some of the great suggestions already made, I recommend:
Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies by Misha Popp (Cozy Mystery/Fantasy)
The Accidental Alchemist by Gigi Pandian (Cozy Mystery/Fantasy)
The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Ann Older (Sci-fi/Mystery)
Brilliance by Marcus Sakey (SFF/Thriller)

I'm thinking my current bookclub pick fits this one so I'll be reading The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton.

Robin (grayeyed) | 67 comments House of Leaves is my choice and it also checks off task 11 and 24 for me.

message 12: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 416 comments The Goddess of Nothing At All is fantasy and myth retelling, Hollow Kingdom is post-apocalyptic and anthropomorphism.

Krista | 140 comments Do you suppose one a book tagged as Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comedy/Humor, and Contemporary would fit this category?

I just finished Starter Villain last night.

I ready it because I love his writing, and it didn't disappoint. Wondering if it would fit somewhere in Read Harder and that's the only challenge that might work.

Erin | 26 comments Just finished ORBITAL by Samantha Harvey (sci-fi/literary fiction). It’s February and GR has a list up of some genre crossing books. Check the main page for a link.

message 16: by Judith (last edited Feb 18, 2025 05:11AM) (new)

Judith Rich | 124 comments I went with Moon Over Soho, the second in the Rivers of London series, which blends fantasy/magic with police procedural crime in modern London. I'm not normally a fantasy fan, but I read the first with my book group last year and quite enjoyed it, so immediately thought of the series for this category.

message 17: by Denise (new)

Denise | 58 comments I read America Fantastica Tim O'Brien

A mystery/historical fiction/crime/literary fiction with humor book

Kathy Irvin | 11 comments I read Consulting Detectives by Tim Major - 5/4/25. It's a sci-fi/hist. fic/mystery combo and an interesting take on the classic Jekyll and Hyde story.
