Ivy
2. Who was your least favorite character?
Gillian or Betony
3. If you could change one part of the book, what would it be? (Spoiler?)
I would up the intensity some to match the next two books. This one feels middle-grade, whereas the next two have a more mature, but still YA, feel. In doing that, more of the MMC’s background could have been brought out in this story which would make us long to know more. As it is only briefly mentioned at the end, it lowers the level of anticipation.
4. What did you think of the ending? (Spoiler tags, please!)
I think it’s a great set up for what is to come in the next two books without it being too much of a cliffhanger. The main plot of this story is over, but the overarching plotline continues.
5. What was your overall opinion?
I love this trilogy—especially its characters and themes. Two of my favorite MCs ever are Ivy and “Richard.

I echo your thoughts! I really liked Ivy, hated Betony the most, and I thought this book felt MG, but I did like it enough to borrow the next one, and already, the second feels YA to me. I'm not sure how the author could make it match the tone of her next books. That is beyond my understanding, but you never know, I might think of something! Anyway, I'm happy to find another good book and series.

Ah, yes! I am glad you persevered into Nomad! The tone really is different, I think, because of Martin's story coming to light. While I love Ivy's story in this trilogy, Martin's is my favorite, probably because of reading the trilogy before this one, No Ordinary Fairy Tale: The Complete Trilogy. That trilogy really puts Martin's story into the proper perspective, although it's not really necessary to read it first.

2. Least favorite characters were Gillian and Betony
3. What would I change: The pacing was very slow at first, I would personally pick up the pace in the first half of the book to keep readers more engaged.
4. How did I feel about the ending: The ending I felt like wrapped things up enough to not make it feel like a cliffhanger ending, but still left enough unfinished and without a resolution to want to continue the series to find out what happens. I thought it was a good and solid ending as far as a trilogy is concerned.
5. My final thoughts: This was a cute book and I enjoyed reading it. It’s definitely more geared to older children/YA, but that didn’t bother me much. I just had to remind myself at times when things felt a little juvenile that it was written to be exactly that and meant to be geared towards the YA crowd. The story itself was adventurous and compelling, and overall kept my attention pretty well. It started out slow and I’d say the first 40% of the book I kept thinking it would be a 2 star read for me- but as it picked up in the second half of the book, I really began to enjoy it as it picked up pace. I will probably read the next 2 in The Flight and Flame Trilogy as I’m curious now how the rest of the story will unfold, and then will likely pass them on to my 15 year old stepson as I think he might enjoy them, as well. Overall well-written, good storyline, interesting and entertaining characters, and I’m glad I gave this one a chance, especially as someone not familiar with fantasy. â¤ï¸

2. Who was your least favorite character?
Gillian - Betony
3. If you could change one part of the
book, what would it be? (Spoiler?)
I wouldn’t liked multiple things to be different, but i guess the biggest thing would have been more character development.
4. What did you think of the ending?
(Spoiler tags, please!)
It was ok. I was a little unsatisfied with it and I felt like the climax was a lil disappointing.
5. What was your overall opinion?
It was ok. I definitely enjoyed reading it (I mean I read it in 1 day😂) but I didn’t love it.

Richard! (I wish he would’ve been in it a little more.)
2. Who was your least favorite character?
Betony and Gillian were both annoying, but honestly, I didn’t care much for Mica. He was a poor excuse for a brother.
3. If you could change one part of the book, what would it be? (Spoiler?)
I’d have less focus on spells and the use of blood in connection with them. Given that this book seems meant for a middle grade audience, that content (especially coming from a Christian author) made me uncomfortable.
4. What did you think of the ending? (Spoiler tags, please!)
It was pretty good! For some reason, I didn’t feel that invested in it, but I don’t know if that’s a problem with the ending, or just the story overall.
5. What was your overall opinion?
I’m still trying to decide my overall opinion, lol! I think it was well-written and interesting enough, but there were worldbuilding things that could have been explained better, and some character choices/reactions that didn’t feel realistic

I genuinely liked Ivy; she was young but had a strong character. I hate when the younger characters come off as overly annoying and selfish, but I didn't get that vibe from Ivy, which is a nice change from some YA books. Richard drew me in from the second he showed up. So maybe Richard, then Ivy.
2. Least favorite character(s):
Gillian and Marigold. I don't know; maybe I'm just too sensitive for the whole lousy mom routine, being a mom myself and seeing all the terrible role models. Maybe I should take it as a sign that I'm doing much better at being a mother than some of these characters 😆. I just would like some good parenting for everyone in a while. We are doing our best over here.
3. What would you change?
See above. I think there could have been a better reason for (view spoiler)
4. What did you think of the ending?
I liked it, I think someone else mentioned it already, but it gave a sense of closure while still making me put the next two in the series on hold at the library.
5. what was your overall opinion of the book?
I genuinely liked it. The Knife series by R.J. has been on my list, so I was excited to read this book series. Besides the examples of bad parenting and terrible sibling relationships, the story was really intriguing, and I am excited to read the next book. I thought the author did a good job building the world and characters, even if I didn't like the relationships. I think the story needed more Richard scenes.

A: Molly; loved her energy and vivacity
2. Who was your least favorite character?
A: Betony; her power hunger really put me on edge
3. If you could change one part of the book, what would it be? (Spoiler?)
A: Maybe fasten a bit the pace at the beginning... It took me a while to really engage with the book.
4. What did you think of the ending? (Spoiler tags, please!)
A: I like it. As it was already said, it gives a good closure to this first book, with no cliffhanger, while still setting some expectation for the second book.
5. What was your overall opinion?
A: Honestly, because it was suggested as Christian fiction/fantasy, I was expecting a bit of a Christian connection, but didn't really find any. It was nice for entertainment, but I wouldn't say it added much to my personal life or faith.
I'm curious to know what kind of Christian connection others were able to get.

@Tori, how did you like Nomad and Torch??

Ah. Actually, when I first read Torch, I downgraded it a star because of what happens with her in the beginning of the book.🤠I went back and gave it a full 5-stars later, though, because I didn't think it was fair of me. I think her story was ready to be told, but then it wasn't.
No Ordinary Fairytale isn't as good a trilogy as Flight & Flame, but it's worth it for the backstory on Martin. Marigold isn't in it, though, so you don't have to worry about her.💜
