Killman Creek by Rachel Caine
Date Read: 4/17/2025
Rating: ✮✮✮✮
Review:
Killman Creek by Rachel Cain is a mystery, murder, thriller, suspense story. It is the second in a series about Gwen Proctor and her children. They are survivors of a serial killer father Melvin Royal and a group of terrorists but they are not safe. Melvin Royal has escaped from prison and is on his way to reclaim his family.
This category is not my first choice in stories to read, but I like Rachel Caine and thought I would give it a try. Her writing brings the story to life and puts you right in the middle of the emotions of the characters.

I have been watching too...

Review: Viv, an orc, gives up mercenary work to set up a coffee shop in Thune. She carefully selected the town and location to introduce this new beverage. She buys a derelict livery stable and over time hires a carpenter/jack-of-all-trades (elf), a baker (rattkin), and a barista/co-manager (succubae). There are problems building the business, dealing with the local mob, and a person from Viv’s past. But these were great quirky characters, and Viv was the perfect heroic but awkward MC. And there is a queer slow burn love story.

I was bored through most of the book. Didn't connect with the characters. I do want to know what happens overall but am not in a hurry to continue this. I really thought I would like this more.

Review: Trude has been in love with Viggo since she was 8, but he was always obsessed with Lisabet and then married her. Five years later Lisabet dies, and he is left with a young daughter and depressed. His business is suffering. Trude offers a marriage to help with his daughter and her father offers money to help with the business. Trude intend to make this a real marriage. But there are strange things making happening that make father and daughter moody and turn hot and cold. Then a mirror arrives from his dead wife.
This is very loosely based on aspects of Snow White and told by the step-mother who is not the evil person in the story. This story is tied to the first in this series by the appearance of Mara and Njils near the end. I liked Mara’s story a little better. Supposed to be a third volume but doesn’t show up anywhere yet. Hope that it gets written.

I loved this book. How can it be #60 and I still like these. I think this may be the best one. Homicide detective Eve Dallas teams up with her hunk of a husband Roark to stop a murdering kidnapper. As a bonus we finally get an in-depth look at her faux nemesis and mysterious major-domo Summerset.

Jackie Leon is a bar owner, bartender, and a werecat. She owns her own territory with her peaceful sanctuary in the center of the property to keep others away. Carey Everson, a young human girl drops on her doorstep asking for protection from her father’s enemies. Jackie is honor bound to protect Carey and this is their adventure.
I chose this book because I saw #4 in the series is the book read for the month of April. I loved it. Jacky Leon is a great character. She is down to earth practical and straight forward. I will definitely continue this series.

St. Mary's Institute of Historical Research analyzes historical events using time travel under the guise of Research. Crazy things happen often to the historians. I liked learning about the historical events but didn't enjoy the romance at all. Will probably continue the series to see what happens next.

Review: The first part of this book is the title novella. It is the prequel to the X-Ops series and introduces John Loughlin the Director of the Dept. of Covert Ops, a well hidden part of Homeland Securities that works well off the books. He is in NYC investigating a potential recruit. Were animals are in the population but deal with a lot of prejudice. John suspects Cree is one. The actual confrontation and recruitment is fun and sexy. There is a side plot about a former recruit who had a bad departure from the department and a possibility that there may be some bad players in the Dept. with a hidden agenda. These things I think will play a part in the series to follow.
The rest of the book is the first 5 chapters in each of two series written by Tyler. One is the follow-up to this prequel and the other is the first volume of a series involving a werewolf SWAT team in Dallas. Both of these were intriguing enough to make me want to read the 2 series.

Review:
Kane and Lana were childhood best friends then a couple. Lana stood by him through a career ending sports injury turned drug addiction until he broke her heart. She asked him to never come back to his family lake home where she was raised and he spent summers growing up in the town of Wisteria Lake. Kane had no intentions of coming back until his grandfather died and the will required he spend a summer at the lake house before he can collect his inheritance. I enjoyed the story line, the characters, and the town of Wisteria Lake.

Review:
The Devil Wears Prada, the movie I enjoyed years ago when it debuted. When I noticed it on the page for Happy/ humorous I was intrigued. I didn’t consider the movie happy or humorous, so I was interested to revisit the full story in the book. As we all know, the book is always better than the movie.
The story is compelling and written so well that I was fully emerged in the story. I didn’t find it happy or humorous. It was intense and stressful. The stress experienced by the main character was easily transferred to the reader.
Andrea had a PhD in English and dreams of being a writer for the New Yorker. She believes she has discovered a short cut to achieving this dream through a one-year internship at a fashion magazine. She only had to survive a year. She believes this is possible until she gets into the position and comes to the realization it is total servitude. She has to be available 24/7 to fulfill any and all demands of her boss. Her life becomes a living hell as she caters, panders, and suffers repeated humiliation at the hands of her Miranda.
I did not enjoy this story and did not find it happy or humorous.

Review: Greg and Fiona have been together 18 years and married 14. They have 2 children and Greg's job as a petroleum engineer has him away from home for months at a time. Fiona is overwhelmed and dealing with constant headaches leading her to worry about a recurrence of her brain tumor. Greg comes home for 48 hours and they have a blowup before he leaves. Then a disaster happens and the story turns into an action adventure, lots of angst, humor and romance. Great read as always with this author.

Olivia has an argument over the phone with her boyfriend and accidently hits a wolf with her car. I was late and she was on the way home from her vet practice. This changes her life and she meets the mysterious Naomi. I enjoyed learning the wolf lore in this and also liked the chemistry between Olivia and Naomi. The plot was predictable in a few areas but still had a few twists that surprised me. I will continue with this series.
