George P. | 697 comments I've read 17 of these, a little over my usual 1/3. There are a few of these in my to-read list but none close to the top so I'm somewhat open to suggestion.
The Long Dark Tea-Time has been in my to-read list a long time, so that would be good. I'm wondering why Akutagawa's Rashoman isn't in this list.

message 3: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2106 comments I have read 29 of these which is my all time record for books read. I would like to read Tent of Miracles, The Bosnia Chronicles, or any of the Peter Ackroyd.

I think it is alphabetized in the Rs. I noticed that but often the Asian names are alphabetized differently. I know it isn’t over 600 pages.

23 is about the average for me. Only two on my TBR shelves:

- Americanah (Adichie)
- The Old Devils (Amis)

No strong preference on either, will wait and see what the common interest is like.

message 6: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 553 comments I’ve read 14 of these. I would like to read one of the Ackroyds and also have Americanah on my TBR. I’d also be up for ¹ó²¹²Ô³Ùô³¾²¹²õ or The Twilight Years, so I’ll see what others say.

I’ve read 29 of these including the ones excluded this year. I’ve read both Americana and The Old Devils. I haven’t read Lambs of London. I think I would like to read one of Amado’s book or Novel with Cocaine or Bosnian Chronicles.

message 8: by Jenna (last edited Mar 16, 2025 10:10AM) (new)

Jenna | 140 comments I have read so few of these (10) but both Americanah and Old Devils, actually!

I am going to Brazil in June for a conference so Amado’s Tent of Miracles would work for me.

I would also be happy to vote for Ackroyd’s Lambs of London, it looks like fun.

message 9: by Jane (new)

Jane | 311 comments I've only read six. I can get behind Long Dark Tea-Time and/or any of the Ackroyds. The House of Dr. Dee sounds interesting, but I'm not married to it.

message 10: by George P. (last edited Mar 16, 2025 07:19AM) (new)

George P. | 697 comments I havent read any of Ackroyd's three on the list. Hawksmoor is the only one still on the most recent edition and has the highest average goodreads rating. I see that Kristel has read it and gave it 4 stars. It's short and I would read it.
I've read the two Amados.

message 11: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 837 comments I can access Hawksmoor, so may put a vote towards it. May is a busy month for me, so there will be less reading time.

I have read 15 of these a good amount for me. I read Lambs of London last year, it was a fun book. Happy voting, I think I will be sitting on the side lines.

message 13: by Rosemary (last edited Mar 16, 2025 10:09AM) (new)

Rosemary | 668 comments Tent of Miracles would work for me. I've read 26 including the Ackroyds, Adichies and most of the Amises.

Thanks for checking that point George, I too have a bias towards things that are still core! Hawksmoor looks like mystery/genre fiction too, so a bit of something different.

I really liked Hawksmoor but don't let the pg count fool you. It is a complex story that is, due to its historical chapters written in archaic language and its exploration of complex themes, can be very challenging.

The BOTM for May by
Popular Vote: Tent of Miracles
Randomizer pick: Hawksmoor which was actually the second runner up in votes.

What will you be reading in May?

message 18: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 553 comments I will try to read both of these, they both sound interesting.

I've already read Hawksmoor. I need Tent of Miracles in French, but I don't have it. It's a long shot, but I am going to London in May, so maybe there could be a little miracle from an impromptu shopping trip. Otherwise, I'll read Daniel Deronda, our second quarterly.

message 20: by George P. (new)

George P. | 697 comments I have read Tent of Miracles a few years ago. I will read Hawksmoor, which I put 2 votes on. I can borrow a copy from university library, it's not at the public libraries here. Sounds challenging and interesting.
On the upcoming quarterly read, I would like to read Daniel Deronda, but I'm reading Infinite Jest and don't want to be reading two long ones at once, so I will get to Daniel later and try to remember to look back at our discussion posts.

message 21: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2106 comments I will endeavor to read both books in May

message 22: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 668 comments I'll be going for Tent of Miracles.

message 23: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 140 comments Oh that’s kind of exciting, since I couldn’t decide and split my vote so I will try and read both also!!

message 24: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 554 comments Oh, fantastic, I have Hawksmoor and I was thinking about reading it over Easter. But I can wait until May!
