Talk freely about what you think of the first part of the novel, which ends, at least in my edition, on page 82 =)

Michael (knowledgelost) Is heroin white? I always was under the impression that it was a brown colour ... *goes buys some heroin to check*

*update* it does depend on the purity, so obviously they got the good stuff

Michael (knowledgelost) do you think Jonny's nickname for Oskar; Piggy is a nod to Lord of the Flies?

I've never read The Lord of the Flies, although it's been sitting on my shelf for a couple years...

I like how complex Oskar is. Usually our knee-jerk reaction to bullying is just feeling sorry for the victim but this time it gets a bit creepier because of his fascination with murders and death penalty. great character.

Michael (knowledgelost) Oskar is a great character...definitely showing signs of having an antisocial personality but I would never call him a sociopath....yet.

I wonder if Oskar will have the same fate as Piggy in Lord of the Flies.

Also, I finished the first part last night. I really liked it. There was a part in particular that made me feel empty so I'm kind of afraid what the rest of the book will be like.

Gregory A (inook_u) | 2 comments I just finished reading the first part just now, and I already like the friendship between Oskar and Eli. But man Hakan is one f'd up dude. Btw my name is Greg, nice to meet everyone. :D

Maddie (themaddiehatter) | 4 comments I just finished part one also! I am really liking this book! The atmosphere is so chilly...

Oskar is great...his dark side makes him a very interesting character. I wouldn't call him a sociopath either though...I love how protective he was getting of Eli towards the end of the first part.

Overall, it has been a bit unsettling. I won't be able to easily forget the scene (view spoiler).

On to part 2 now! Also, nice to meet you too Greg!

Bekah (bezzabee) Just finished part one. Wow! This books is so...dark! It will definitely stay with me. Likely because I just read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I couldn't help but compare the feel of these two stories. Lindqvist & Larsson write things that could make one feel physically ill and yet yearn to carry on reading, demanding a resolution of some sort. There is something in the water in Sweden, I am sure of it!

J. (jellybeanlegs) | 3 comments I'm about to finish part 1 (about time, yes, I know. The snail of the read-along-readers). And this is so chilly. It pokes at my insides with a pool stick.

J. (jellybeanlegs) | 3 comments Oskar is called Piggy and the boy murdered is hung by a tree like a pig ...not gonna get conclusions out of this but I need to let it out
