I always read two books at the same time! Usually a current thriller or mystery and a classic- Right now I am just finishing up- The Elusive Pimpernel- the sequel to The Scarlet Pimpernel- so my mind is very much on Revolutionary France! Also I am almost done with Exposure by R. J. Pineiro a very tense techno-thriller. I am really interested in what our Members are reading

BTW- DO NOT READ THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL before you first read The Scarlet Pimpernel as there are many references to first book in it- which can be very confusing to those not familiar with Scarlet Pimpernel.

Suzanne (bellamy22) '20th Century Ghosts' by Joe Hill ...
Yes, I said I do NOT like collections of stories, but this is Stephen King's son, sooooo I made an exception!!! :)

Will start 'The Man Who Made Vermeers' by Jonathan Lopez hopefully by Friday.

message 4: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (texasaggieteacher) I'm in the middle of the Twilight series and then I'm reading Just Jane by Nancy Moser, it's a novel about Jane Austen's life. Nancy Moser actually has a whole series on historical figures and their lives.

message 5: by Sadie (new)

Sadie I just finished The Giver by Lois Lowry last night, am listening to Flora Segunda, and reading Frankenstein with my husband...which we should finish right around Christmas at the rate we are going! I'm also reading about a chapter a night from Cordelia Underwood: Or the Marvelous Beginnings of the Moose Path League.

wonderful titles all! I enjoy seeing what others are reading- it makes us more into a community- rather then just another Group!

Bree (breej6434) | 1 comments I love the giver, such a great book, did you enjoy it?

message 8: by Sadie (last edited Nov 04, 2009 06:55PM) (new)

Sadie I did enjoy it, but I can't say that I loved it. I did like many elements of the story and the characters. It was a great look at the importance of choices and feelings (good or bad). That though we may suffer there is always a silver lining in being able to enjoy more fully the good moments.

message 9: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (bellamy22) Jennifer*Thank you for admitting to 'Twilight'. It receives great scorn and derision here in GR.

All I can say is, to my absolute astonishment, upon opening the first book in the series ...
I discovered that the empty space in my chest must have a small bit of tissue left, because I LOVED them ...
I love Edward and Bella, and the way he speaks to her, and the underlying monologue of her voice.
I love the movie, as well.

I realized that there is still a romantic in here, somewhere.
I thought I would never see her again.

But it was very nice, for one second, to know what she used to be like.

message 10: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (texasaggieteacher) :D I was skeptical at first, but I actually really like them so far. I'm about to start the third book and I just started reading the series Saturday! I read fast. They read like the Harry Potter books.

Ah, The Giver brings back memories of my childhood. It was one of my favs.

message 12: by Sadie (new)

Sadie I, too, liked the Twilight series and, yes they are not in any way a serious work of fiction but are fun and appeal to the 16 year old inside me. I plan on reading them again. :)

message 13: by Suzanne (new)

While I have not read the Twilight Books- I do know many who have- of all ages- who love them! It is very important to me that regardless of what one reads- there is NO SCORN directed towards them in our Group.
It is our very diverse taste in books that makes the Group so wonderful!

Sadie wrote: "I will be starting Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler this weekend."

Sadie- you will have to let us know how the book is as you progress- I read The Accidental Tourist when in College-for a course- and as I was in a Fraternity- and a bit younger! Literature was not Tops on my list!

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan (boswellbaxter) Sadie, hope you enjoy Ladder of Years! It's one of my favorite novels, and Tyler is one of my favorite novelists--actually probably my favorite living novelist.

message 19: by Sadie (new)

Sadie This will be my first Anne Tyler novel. She's my friend's favorite authors as well. I'll let you know what I think.

s•u•n•s•h•i•n•e «§KENZ§» Has anyone read Faro's Daughter? I don't remember who it's by (as usual), but I'm gonna go look for it...

s•u•n•s•h•i•n•e «§KENZ§» Ah-ha! It's by Georgette Heyer! I loved the book (read the older edition), and would highly recommend it.

Thanks for info Mickey- here is some more on the title

Faro's Daughter is a Regency romance novel by Georgette Heyer which was first published in 1941.

Plot summary
The beautiful but poor Deborah Grantham presides over her aunt's gaming house in Regency London. Here she meets Max Ravenscar who is determined to prevent his young cousin and ward from contracting an inappropriate marriage to Grantham.

s•u•n•s•h•i•n•e «§KENZ§» I have to admit, that is one of my favourite books.

I recently read a thriller by Seth Harwood, who is a member of the Group called JACK WAKES UP- it was simply stunning! very much atmospheric and character driven, I was so taken by the lead character and his plight that I literally could not put the book down!
It is a crime thriller and has so much noir prose that one feels as if Chandler was reborn as Seth Harwood! Very Recommended

Also just finished The Elusive Pimpernel- I enjoyed it- but not as much as the first book-The Scarlet Pimpernel as this one had much less action and more wordy.

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 71 comments Call me a moth to the big flame ... I'm reading Dan Brown's Lost Symbol.

I wanted to identify his writing style to see what seems to interest general readers. It's highly conversational (rather than narrative), to the point (little character emotion, background story, or description), except when there is a new widget, puzzle or architectural place ...

I hoped it would help me with my own writing ... it did, a little :o)

I have to say I am not impressed with the plot though.

s•u•n•s•h•i•n•e «§KENZ§» I read and finished The Way of the Shadows (could be off by a few words on the title) by Brent Weeks . It was interesting, to say the least.

message 29: by Tod (new)

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 71 comments I'm interested to hear what you thought of the Shadow's book...

I loved the premise, but thought there were editing issues.

It's a three part saga and it gets much deeper and darker.

s•u•n•s•h•i•n•e «§KENZ§» So I've heard. It reminded me of the Farsala trilogy, actually. I loved the plot and story, but I didn't like how once something new came up, that's what the story immediately jumped to. It made the book less... intriguing, I'd say, although that's not quite the right word.

message 31: by Tod (new)

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 71 comments I think you will find that holds consistent throughout. I immediately understood what you meant :o)

Gary F | 170 comments I am currently reading The Infiltrator which is a memoir of an undercover agent who busted a drug ring. Quite good so far.

I just completed Exposure by R. J. Pineiro - really kept me interested- excellant plot- good characters- a fine thriller- although the political angle never really gelled.

just started The Patriot Club by Chris Reich- seems to be a neatly plotted thriller
Also next classic I am reading is The Law and the Lady by Wilkie Collins

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 71 comments I just started The Unabridged Edgar Allen Poe. Poetry isn't really my thing, unless there is a substantial mood to it. I want to understand his work better though and will try to get through most of it, especially the novellas and major poems.

Brown's Lost Symbol was both good and bad. I wrote a review on it ... if anyone's interested.

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 39 comments I am reading Dead Until Dark for a book club I moderate. I wouldn't ordinarily read a vampire book or series. I just feel like I should try to read the monthly group reads, since I didn't do too well with the first three months.

Tod- I have the Poe volume- and - my it is large!!!
let me know if it is worth the effort!
I-believe it or not- must be the one person who has not read The DaVinci Code- so I will read it (2 day read) and then your review of the sequel!

Thanks - Tod

Tod Langley (todlangley) | 71 comments It's huge...I lugged it through the aiport last weekend in my back pack. I read a few poems last night and then got to Talmaridge. I fell asleep!

I'll try again tonight.

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 39 comments It is a teen book club. I am way past my teens, but I like a lot of their books. I have a certain amount of days set aside for nominating books and a certain amount of days for voting for the two nominations each person liked to read. I then pick the two that were most voted on. I put them in a category with all of the other chosen ones from other months so that anyone can comment on a book from any month at any time. I hope this helps, Tod.

I feel book clubs are wonderful- but have held back adding one to this group- because it seems as if most members are already reading books- and the Group has become quite diversified - topic wise- which I love- also I am quite sensitive to the fact that there might be some who wish to participate in a book discussion group- yet cannot get the chosen title at their local library- or afford the cost of buying it- perhaps I will have a poll on if we should institute a reading group- but I welcome all comments!
Catamorandi - pleaselet me know how your reading group handles the above issues.
Rick

Jennifer (texasaggieteacher) You have to be in the right mood for Poe since all of his stuff is really dark. I've read several of his stuff in my literature classes in college. It was emotionally draining at times cause it's so dark and deep.

s•u•n•s•h•i•n•e «§KENZ§» I'm trying to memorize one of his poems by tomorrow morning. (bleh, English). It's called "Dream-land".

lol, no kidding.

"By a route obscure and lonely,
haunted by ill angels only,
where an Eidolon named NIGHT,
on a black throne reigns upright,
I have reached these lands but newly,
from an ultimate dim Thule,
from a wild clime that lieth, sublime,
out of SPACE-- out of TIME."

The first stanza of five longer ones.

message 50: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (texasaggieteacher) It always helped me to write it out stanza by stanza a few times and read it aloud as I did. It eventually sunk in.
