Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11182 comments 20.1 - Most Improved Player - Mary P's task: Summer is for Relaxing
Help Thread
I drive a school bus for a very large school district, so for 10 months out of the year I am driving children back and forth to school, on field trips, and to sporting events. When summer vacation comes around, I have to admit I am just as exited as the kids.

One of my favorite things to do to relax is to sit on my back deck in the morning with a hot cup of coffee and read for awhile.

Pick 1 of the 2 options below and put your feet up in your favorite reading spot with a beverage of your choice and a good book and just relax.

Option1: If your to-be-read list looks anything like mine, there are not enough days in the summer to make a dent in it. Sort your to-be-read list or pile from oldest to newest. Choose one of the ten oldest ones to read and spend some time relaxing.

Option 2: At the moment I am enjoying the days of summer but all the seasons represent something special for me. Read a book that has Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall in the title. Possessives and plurals are allowed, but no other variations. The word does not necessarily have to be referring to a season.

20.2 - Rookie at the Top - Lauren Jodi's task: The X-Philes
Help Thread
It has recently been announced by the Fox Network that a miniseries revival of The X-Files is in the works. This was my first ever TV show addiction and I would await with bated breath for each new episode. In honor of the bizarre exploits of Special Agent Fox Mulder and his skeptical partner, Dr. Dana Scully, read ONE book from the option of your choice.

REQUIRED: State which option you chose when posting.

Option 1: THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE
Mulder is obsessed with the alleged alien abduction of his sister, Samantha. He is on a mission to discover the truth about what happened to her. Read a book from the Quests Listopia. Be careful as it is possible that some of the books do not meet the SRC rules.
Required: State on which page of the list your book can be found.

Option 2: I WANT TO BELIEVE
The existence of aliens is a major theme running throughout the nine seasons of the original TV show as well as the subsequent feature films. Read a book with “aliens or “extraterrestrials as a main page genre. The genre can be embedded.

Option 3: TRUST NO ONE
Loyalty and betrayal are constant concerns for Mulder and his stalwart partner. They are constantly wary of mysterious enemies with secret agendas or fellow FBI agents with traitorous intentions. Read a book in which the main character is a spy or a double agent.
Required: If the connection isn't clear in the ŷ description or genre list, explain how your book fits the task when you post.

20.3 - Best Review - Meghanly's task: ACRONYMS
Help Thread
Read one book with a title that consists of two or more words where the first letters of each word in the title spell an English word that is not a proper noun. Every word in the title counts, including "The", "A" "of" and "And". You should be able to read the letters from left to right and make a word (see examples below). Subtitles should be ignored. They may not be used. Titles that include numbers and symbols (ex: &) that are NOT spelled out cannot be used for this task. Need to check a word? This link might help:

Examples:
Sharp Objects = SO
A Little Life = ALL
Blood of My Blood = BOMB

When the park opened, it consisted of five lands: Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland. Read a book with American, Fantasy, Western, Adventure, OR Science Fiction as a main page genre. Genres may be embedded or stand-alone.

Option 3: Of those in my family with birthdays during June, July and August, 8 of us are female. Read a book by a female author whose birthday also falls within these three months. This link might help:

Option 4: My only two nieces, Kimberlyn and Kaitlyn, celebrate their birthdays in July and August, respectively. Read a book whose title/subtitle (excluding series titles) contains a word beginning with the letter K.

20.5 - Bigger is Better Camilla’s task: Dragon Kings
Help Thread
During the summer I love spending time near the water, either by a lake or a sea. Because of this, I chose the theme of Dragon Kings for this task.

**Note: Books with the genre children or kids may NOT be used for this task.**

Read ONE book from one of the following options.

Required: State which option you chose when you post.

A Dragon King is a deity in Chinese mythology commonly regarded as the divine ruler of moving bodies of water, such as waterfalls, rivers, or seas. For this option, read a book that shows a body of water (e.g., waterfall, river, sea, lake, pond, pool) on the cover.

For this option, read a book with one of the following words in the title or subtitle: king, queen, prince, princess, palace, castle, royal, court. Plurals and possessives will work, but no other variations.

Letters may be used only as many times as they occur in the name of the direction. Middle initials should be ignored. Hyphenated names count as one name.
Examples: Susan Ee (EAST), Thomas Harris (SOUTH or NORTH), Nora Roberts (NORTH)
Required: State which direction the author's initials can be found within.

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11182 comments 20.7 - Shorter is Sweeter - Ana's task: Summer Celebrations
Help Thread
Summer is the season in which my husband and my daughter were born. My Anniversary is also in the summer. So I created this task in honor of these special occasions.

Read ONE book from the following options.
Books with genre options may be stand alone or embedded

Required: State which option you chose when you post.

Option 1 - My daughter is a young woman whose favorite book is The Maze Runner. Read a book with the main page genre "Science Fiction" or "Young Adult". The genre may be stand alone or embedded.

Option 2 - My husband enjoys reading about WWII. Read a book with the genre "War." The genre may be stand alone or embedded.

Option 3 - Read a book with the word "Birthday" or "Anniversary" in the title. Plurals and possessives will work, but no other variations.

Option 4 - Their favorite colors are Pink and Blue. Read a book that is predominantly (at least 50%) one of these colors. Required: Include the cover when you post.

NOTE: Books with the genres “graphic novel, “sequential art, or “comics etc MAY be used for this task as long as they meet SRC requirements.

20.8 - Nickels & Dimes - Mhairi's task: UNESCO Cities
Help Thread
This summer, I'm leaving my beloved Glasgow for Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. Both cities have UNESCO status: Glasgow is a City of Music, and Edinburgh is a City of Literature. Choose ONE option.

Option 1: Read a book set at least 50% in, or by an author born in, a . Required: The author's place of birth must be listed on their ŷ profile and the book's setting must be found either in the book's description, metadata, or in the reviews on the book's main page

Option 2: Read a non-fiction book with the genre 'Music.' Genre may be stand alone or embedded.

Note: Graphic Novels may be used for this task as long as they fit all other ŷ criteria.

REQUIRED: State which option you have chosen when you post.

20.9 - Moderator's Pet - Wayne's task: It's Stampede Time!
Help Thread
From July 3-12, Calgary will be hosting the 103rd edition of the Calgary Stampede. As part of my effort to bring a little piece of Calgary to the world, my task is centered around this celebration.

Required: State which option you chose when you post.

Option 1: For many people, wearing Western clothing is part of the fun. Suits and ties disappear, to be replaced by denim skirts, checkered shirts, and, of course, cowboy hats. Although the white cowboy hat is an official symbol of the Stampede, hats of many colors can be seen: black, brown, and even (shudder!) pink.

Read a book that has a cowboy hat on the cover. Ex:

The Rustlers of West Fork by Louis L'Amour Corralled (Blacktop Cowboys, #1) by Lorelei James Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry Close Range Brokeback Mountain and Other stories by Annie Proulx Broken (Broken, #1) by Kelly Elliott Midnight Cowboy by James Leo Herlihy Cowgirl at Heart (The McCord Sisters, #2) by Christine Lynxwiler Return of the Stardust Cowgirl (Lucy Hatch, #4) by Marsha Moyer

Required: Include the cover when you post.

Option 2: The Stampede always kicks off on the first Friday in July with a huge parade through the downtown core, and it is most of the most popular events on the Stampede agenda. For that reason, it's important to get downtown early to stake out a spot on the parade route. Otherwise, all you'll be able to see are the backs of other people's cowboy hats!

Read a book whose author's initial can be found in the phrase STAMPEDE PARADE. Letters may be used as many times as they appear in STAMPEDE PARADE. Middle names or initials may be ignored.

Option 3: The rodeo is the central event of the Stampede, and of the rodeo events, bull riding is the most popular. In this sport, the rider attempts to remain on the bull for 8 seconds, while the enraged bull does everything it can to prevent that. The bull usually wins, so this is the sport for people who like to cheer for the underdog. Personally, I think you'd have to be a huge glutton for punishment to want to be a bull rider.

Read a book that is #8 in a series, as identified on ŷ (series name, #8).

Option 4: I have to admit that I'm not into the Stampede as much as most Calgarians are. I'm not a big rodeo fan, I'm content to stay home and watch the parade on TV, the midway rides terrify me (with the possible exception of the merry-go-round), and I'd rather have my head explode than see a cowboy hat perched atop it! However, there is one aspect of Stampede that I look forward to eagerly: the free pancake breakfasts! I attend at least one per day, and more than one if I can possibly arrange it. I know I'm having a good Stampede if I can actually feel my arteries hardening. :)

Read a book with Food or Cooking as a main page genre. Genres may be stand-alone or embedded.

Happy Stampeding, everyone!

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11182 comments 25.1 - Angel **Book Junkie**'s task: In a Series
Help Thread
Read TWO books in the same series. Each book must be indicated as part of the same series in parentheses after the book's title - Book Title (Series, #).The books may be consecutive in the series, but they do not have to be. For example, you can read Book #1 and Book #2 or you can read Book #4 and Book #7. Whole numbers ONLY (i.e., Book #1.5, Book #2.1, etc will not work).

25.2 - Shiraloo's task: Summer’s Bounty
Help Thread
Summer is my favorite season because it means my farm will be bursting to the seams with gorgeous, fresh fruits and vegetables. Yes, that’s right, this city gal is a secret farmer. I volunteer in my free time and I can’t wait for June to roll around so I can start getting my hands dirty.

This is a TWO BOOK task.

There are three options which represent each month of the growing season. You can choose the same option twice.

REQUIRED: State your chosen option(s) when posting.

OPTION 1 JUNE: The farm I currently work for grew a bumper crop of rhubarb that we are just now harvesting. With June’s best strawberries as well, I see a rhubarb-strawberry pie in my future.

Read a book where the author’s initials can be found in the word RHUBARB. Letters can only be used as many times as found in the word (2 Bs, 2 Rs). Middle names/initials *do* count. Hyphenated names count as one name. For multi-author works, only the FIRST author as listed by ŷ can be used for this option.

OPTION 2 JULY: July is usually the busiest at the farm as much of the spring planting has to be pulled out and the late summer things aren’t ripe yet. Living in the UK now, I never know what is in season, so I always consult to find what's available.

For this option, pick a fruit or vegetable from this list: blueberry, cabbage, carrot, cherry, cucumber, lettuce, pea, raspberry, spinach, strawberry. Then read a book with the name of the fruit or vegetable in the title/subtitle OR pictured clearly on the cover. If choosing the title option, plurals and possessives are ok but no other variations.

Here is a list of potential ideas for both the title and cover options for Cherry, for instance: Cherry Listopia

REQUIRED: List the vegetable you chose. If you choose the cover option, you must also include the cover in your post.

OPTION 3 AUGUST: Because of my love for fresh food, I’ve decided to pursue a graduate degree in nutrition starting in August!

To celebrate this, read a book that has the genre Nutrition or Food as a main genre. Genres can be standalone or embedded, and the book can be fiction or nonfiction.

25.3 - Andy P's task: Straight Letter, Crooked Letter
Help Thread
This is a TWO book task. You must choose one Book 1 option and one Book 2 option.
**Books with the genre Childrens or Kids as a main page genre may NOT be used for this task.**

For the purposes of this task, the following will be considered "Straight" letters: A, E, F, H, I, K, L, M, N, T, V, W, X, Y, Z
The following will be considered "Crooked" letters: B, C, D, G, J, O, P, Q, R, S, U

Book 1 - Read a book written by an author whose initials are ALL "Straight" (including middle initials, if used). Repeated initials are NOT allowed. Coauthors will be accepted but BOTH authors names must fit the criteria. Ex: Elizabeth Lowell or Andrew Klavan would work, but A.A. Milne would not (repeated A).
OR
Read a book in which the beginning letter of every word in the title (AND subtitle, if applicable) begins with a "Straight" letter. Titles must contain at least two words and repeating letters CANNOT be used. Ex: Murder In Thrall will work, but Ten Thousand Islands will not (repeated T).

Book 2 - Read a book whose author's initials are all "Crooked". As above, no repeating letters can be used. Coauthors will be accepted but BOTH authors names must fit the criteria.
OR
Read a book in which the beginning letter of every word in the title (AND subtitle, if applicable) begins with "crooked" letters. Again, titles must contain at least two words and repeating letters may not be used.

The title/name you choose must use modern Latin language characters (based on A-Z). Accents and diacritic marks should be ignored.

25.4 - Beth Robinson's task: Science & Writing
Help Thread
When I started the Spring challenge I said I hadn't read this many books in such a short time since college. Now I'm not even sure that I did it then and I was doing a double major in Materials Engineering and in English and reading for pleasure too. In memory of my college years...

This is a TWO book task. Read one book from each option.
**Books with the genre Childrens or Kids as a main page genre may NOT be used for this task.** Graphic novels/manga/collected comic books ARE allowed if they meet the other requirements.

Option 1: Read a non-fiction book with the genre or sub-genre "engineering" or "science" OR read a book in which the main protagonist is a scientist or engineer of some variety.

Option 2: Read a non-fiction book with the genre or sub-genre "writing" OR read a book in which the main protagonist is an author or journalist as a career, not just as a hobby.

The protagonist can be either the main character in a fiction book or the subject of a biography or autobiography. Their profession should be clear from the description of the book on the ŷ page.

25.5 - Bluemoon's task: Summer Fun
Help Thread
In the Northeast summer is so short we have to try and pack a lot into a few short months. This task is based on my summer activities.

Please chose TWO different options and read a book for each.

REQUIRED: State which options you chose when you post.

A. IN THE GARDEN - I love to garden. My husband decided he wanted to contribute something to the gardens around our home. He works for the town we live in and as part of his job he travels all around the town. He always has his eyes peeled for objects to put in the garden. So far we have a Tonka truck, a Tonka crane, 2 tricycles, a small wine barrel, a gumball machine, and several galvanized pots of varying shapes and sizes.

In honor of my husband read a book that you got for free. It can be borrowed from the library, a friend or family member. Or it could be a gift. Just as long as it was free.

REQUIRED: State where you received the book.

B. ON THE WATER - We have friends who recently bought a boat. We have a standing invitation to come spend the day on the boat. Can't wait to spend some time relaxing on the water.

For this option read a book that has a boat on the cover.
Sail by James Patterson Dockside (Lakeshore Chronicles, #3) by Susan Wiggs The Captain's Bride (Northern Lights, #1) by Lisa Tawn Bergren Life of Pi by Yann Martel The Log from the Sea of Cortez by John Steinbeck Frenchman's Creek by Daphne du Maurier The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor Lethal by Sandra Brown Down River by Karen Harper

REQUIRED: Include the cover when you post.

C. WITH THE FAMILY - We have many family gatherings this summer including family picnics, weddings and graduations to name a few.

For this option read a book where the authors initials can be found in FAMILY GATHERING. All initials count and letters may only be used as often as they appear.

Help Thread
This summer, my kids won’t have many lazy days. One has an internship, and the other is going to summer school.

This is a TWO book task. Read one book from two different options:

REQUIRED: State which options you chose and include any additional required information when you post.

1) On-the-job Training Read a book with a main character learning how to do a new job (either via an internship or because she has just started.) The new job must be an important part of the story. Examples: The Beekeeper's Apprentice, The Year They Tried to Kill Me : Surviving a Surgical Internship Even If the Patients Don't
REQUIRED: State the new job or internship when you post.

2) Braaaains -The internship is at a brain-imaging lab. How cool is that? Read a book from the first 300 titles on the Best Zombies Books list (i.e., the first 3 pages). Important: Ensure that the book you choose meets all SRC rules. REQUIRED: State on which page your book can be found when you post.

3) School’s Not Out For Summer Read a book about university student life or with a main character attending college. The campus life in question is for that of a student, not anyone else on campus (such as a professor or administrator) and campus life must be an important part of the text. Examples:Fangirl, Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town
REQUIRED: If the college setting is not obvious from the GR description, explain how your book fits the task when you post.

4) Music History The summer course is on music history. Read a book with an instrument on the cover. Examples: The Jazz Palace by Mary Morris , Lick (Stage Dive, #1) by Kylie Scott
REQUIRED: Include the cover when you post.

25.7 - Nikki's Task: Drug of Choice
Help Thread
If you are reading this, you love books, you love reading and reading is an integral part of your life. The Seasonal Reading Challenge is not for the occasional reader, you're not a person who buys a single book at the airport to read while on holiday, in fact you probably put more thought into planning your holiday reading than you did planning what else to pack. Do you hide the amounts you read? Do people really know how many books you buy? Have you ever walked out of the library and mumbled something about the 11 books being for a friend?

So repeat after me. My name is .................. and I am a book addict.

This is a TWO book task. Read one Book 1 and one Book 2.

Book 1 - The Dragon
What book helped cement your love of reading? Was there a book in your childhood that you specifically remember? Or did you come back to reading as an adult? If so, what book brought you back?

Re-read a book that is special to you. Caution: All books must conform to all SRC rules, including the use of children's books.

Optional: Write a few words to explain why the book is special to you.

Book 2 - Honouring your dealer
Who was your enabler? For me it was my childhood friend Lynise with whom I shared every book and who introduced me to Dean Koontz at the age of 12yrs (you know, to take my childhood nightmares to a new level :). Perhaps it was your parents that embraced your needs, or maybe a friend or sibling or kindly librarian that would allow you to borrow more than the stupid 2 book limit.

So read a book that clearly includes the person or relationship that describes you and your book dealer in the ŷ summary. Example: Parent, Teacher, sibling, best friend, neighbour, librarian etc.
Required: Explain how your book fits the task when you post.

NOTE: Books with genres “Graphic Novel, “Sequential Art, “Comics, and “Manga that conform to all other SRC rules MAY be used for this task.

25.8 - Catherine T's task: Diverse Reading
Help Thread
This is a TWO book task. **Both books and at least one of the authors should be new to you.**

In an essay by Roxane Gay titled , Gay reported that nearly 90 percent of books reviewed in The New York Times are written by whites. Gay researched the racial background of every author critiqued by the paper in 2011. She yielded predictably striking results: 31 black authors, 655 white ones. Eighty-one reviewed books in all by writers of color.

My challenge: to read more ethnically diverse authors. So, for this task, read two books by authors from diverse backgrounds and/or cultures. Co-authored books or books with multiple authors will work as long as ALL contributors have ethnically diverse backgrounds.

For the purposes of this task that means:
** Asian-Indian - authors whose origins are from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Sri Lanka
** Asian-Pacific - authors whose origins are from Japan, China, Indonesia, Macao, Malaysia, Taiwan, North or South Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Trust Territories of the Pacific or the Northern Marianas.
** African - authors who have origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.
** Hispanic/Latin - authors who have origins of Hispanic/Latin heritage, defined as the the following regions: Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean Basin
** Middle-Eastern/North African - authors who have origins in Turkey, Iran, the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, or the Maghreb
** Native/Indigenous People - authors who have origins in the cultures of the North American Indian, Eskimo, Aleut, Native Hawaiian or Oceanic Aboriginal peoples.

Required: If the author is not identified as one of the qualifying groups on their GRs profile, you must include a link to a reference establishing their ethnic origins. Also, state that neither book is a reread and identify the new-to-you author(s) when you post.

25.9 - Elizabeth B's task: Roll of the Dice
Help Thread
During another GR challenge I participated I had to solve cryptograms in English. I was searching for statistical information regarding frequencies of the letters in the English language and found the following list -
1 - E - 12.51%
2 - T - 9.25%
3 - A - 8.04%
4 - O - 7.60%
5 - I - 7.26%
6 - N - 7.09%

For this task, you should ONE time. You may choose to re-roll the dice ONLY if you get two of the same number or you may use the same number twice.

The numbers you roll will determine the target letters and how often the letters must appear in your book's title and/or subtitle.

Read TWO books, one Book 1 and one Book 2:

For Book 1- use the first number you rolled as the number of occurrences of the letter and the second number to select the letter from the list (from 1-6)

For Book 2- Switch the 2 numbers you rolled. The second number now determines the number of occurrences and the first number identifies the letter on the list

If you rolled a 2 and a 5 then for book A: Read a book that contains exactly 2 I (fifth letter in the list) in the title. For book B: Read a book that contains exactly 5 T (second letter in the list) in the title. Subtitles can be used or disregarded.

**Books with the genre Childrens or Kids as a main page genre may NOT be used for this task.**
Graphic novels/manga/collected comic books are allowed as long as they meet the task requirements.

REQUIRED: State the numbers you rolled when you post.

25.10 - Sirena's task: My Mom Is the Best
Help Thread
I love my mom, and I probably don’t tell her enough! So, she is my inspiration for this task.

Choose either A OR B:

A. Is a TWO book option: pick 2 different options and read 1 book from each.

1. My mom’s western astrological sign is LEO. And she is SUCH a LEO: A born leader, highly competitive, and an occasional procrastinator. Read a book by an author who was born under the sign of LEO (July 23 August 22). This site might help:
REQUIRED: If the author's birthday is not listed on their ŷ profile, you must provide a link to the information for verification.

2. My mom moved around as a child and as part of her career in the Air Force. Read a book that is set at least 50% in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Hawaii, Wyoming, New Mexico, California, OR Guam.
REQUIRED: If the setting is not stated on the book's main page, explain how the book fits the task.

3. My mom is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant who served honorably for over 20 years! Read a book with Military as a main page genre. The genre may be stand alone or embedded.

4. My mom loves a good mystery! Read a book from the Best Crime & Mystery Books List or read a book written by her favorite author, Mary Higgins Clark.
REQUIRED: If using the list, identify the page on which the book can be found when you post.

5. My mom is one of those lucky women whose hair turned a beautiful shade of silver. Read a book featuring at least one person with white, gray, or silver hair on the cover.
REQUIRED: Include the cover when you post.

B. Is a ONE book option: My mom is an overachiever! For this option, find 1 book that fits 2 of the above options. Since my mom is turning 55 this August, if you choose this option the book must be at least 550 pages long.

NOTE: ebooks without print versions cannot be used for tasks requiring a specific number of pages. If you read an ebook or listen to an audiobook, use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.

REQUIRED: Identify the options you chose and include any REQUIRED information for each option.

Help Thread
I live in NYC which is a great place to live and to visit. The streets are very busy in summer and we have a lot of tourists. To celebrate all that is great about NYC you have 5 options.

This is a TWO BOOK task. Choose TWO DIFFERENT options and read a book for each.

Required: State which options you chose when you post.

1. New York City! Read a book set in NYC. Required: If the setting is not apparent from the GR description or metadata, you must provide a link to an external source verifying the setting.

2. Music: There are lots of concerts that take place in and around NYC in the summer. I am looking forward to the annual NY Philharmonic program in Central Park. Read a book with a main character who is a Musician or with "Music" as a main page genre. Embedded genres are allowed.

3. Sports: NYC has a number of great sports teams and I love being able to hop on the subway and go to a baseball game at Yankee Stadium. Read a book with "Sports" as a main page genre. Embedded genres are allowed.

4. Restaurants: I think it's possible to find whatever you have a craving for in NYC. My sons love to go to Chinatown while I prefer to find great Mediterranean restaurants. My family, friends and I typically go to or order Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Greek, Persian, Middle Eastern, Indian or Mexican. Read a book set in one of the corresponding countries: Japan, China, Italy, Greece, Iran, Saudi Arabia, India or Mexico.

Required: If the setting is not apparent from the GR description or metadata, you must provide a link to an external source verifying the setting.

5. Arts/Entertainment: NYC is known for its museums and art. Lots of movies are set in NYC. It's nice to cool off on a hot day by going to the movies or ducking in to a museum. Read a book with "Art," "Film," or "Movies" as a main page genre. Embedded genres are allowed. Be cautious, books consisting primarily of images or photographs without a substantial written component (essays, criticism, etc.) may not be be claimed for points in the SRC. These books often have the genre "Art."

25.12 - Delicious Dee's task: 500 Questions
Help Thread
So I know I should have been busting my butt reading to finish up more than the day the challenge ends, but over the last couple of weeks, I found myself sucked into the trivia show, 500 questions. This was a 7 night event that was aired on ABC and totally fit my trivia junkie addiction. So what better idea, that to base my task around it

For this task, you will read TWO books from 2 different options and since (at this time), no one managed to complete the 500 questions, the combined page total for your book MUST BE LESS than 500 pages.

1. Trivia I love trivia (of course) most nights, you will find me watching Jeopardy or similar and I never turn down a chance to play Trivial Pursuit. In my ŷ explorations, I found there is a Trivia Genre. For this task, pick a book that appears in the top 300 (first 6 pages) of the Popular Trivia books list. Required: State which page your book was found on when you post.

2. Format - 500 questions consists of 10 rounds of 50 questions each; each round has 10 categories with 5 questions in each category. Read a book that is either #5, #10, or #50 in a series. The book must be identified as part of a series (Series Title, #) on ŷ.

3. Contestants - There were 4 winners over the 7 night event. Read a book written by an author whose name matches EXACTLY one of the winners names (either first or last) - Dan McCarthy, Steve Bahnaman, Adam Villani, Richard Mason.

4.Top Ten Challenge This occurs when the contestant has to name five of the top 10 topics in a category. For this option, read a book that appears on one of the . This list will change, so make sure to note the day the book you choose appeared on the list. REQUIRED: State the category your book appeared in and the date you picked it.

5. Battle Occurs when the contestant and challenge face off against each other in a naming battle. Read a book that shows 2 (and only 2) people facing each other on the cover. Both faces must be visible; profiles are fine. Required: Include the cover when you post.

6. Triple Threat means that the contestant must provide all three correct answers to the question. Read a book that is #3 in a series, as identified on ŷ (Series Title, #3).

25.13 - Morgan Faeriesfolly's task: It's not Usagi
Help Thread
The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter tells the story of a childless man who cuts down a glowing stalk of bamboo and finds a thumb-sized baby girl inside. He and his wife choose to raise her as their own and every time he cuts down bamboo from that day forward, he finds a gold nugget inside. Kaguya-hime grows from a tiny thumb-sized infant to a beautiful young woman.

This is a TWO BOOK task. Choose TWO DIFFERENT options and read a book for each.

Books with the main page genre 'Sequential Art(Graphic Novels/Manga/Comic Collection)' ARE ALLOWED.

Since Kaguya-hime gave FIVE impossible tasks to FIVE princes, I'll give you all FIVE not-so-impossible options to choose from.

REQUIRED: State which options you chose when posting.

Option 1: Stories of tiny infants found in plant-life or via other means, or similar stories with older, childless couples adopting infants they found are scattered throughout folk & fairy tales in many different cultures. They are told and re-told and beloved in many forms. This story alone has multiple versions. For this option, read a book with the main page genre 'Retellings'. The genre may stand alone or be embedded. (ex. 'Fairy Tale Retellings')

Option 2: Kaguya-hime is saddened when she sees the full moon, and finally admits to her adoptive Earth parents that she will have to return to her people on the moon. Why she was sent there in the first place varies from version to version. For this option, read a book where a full moon can be seen on the cover. The full circle of the moon must be visible for it to count. Required: Post the cover when claiming the task for completion.

[Examples]
A Creature of Moonlight by Rebecca Hahn Milk Glass Moon (Big Stone Gap, Book 3) by Adriana Trigiani The Nightmare Dilemma (The Arkwell Academy, #2) by Mindee Arnett Murder on a Midsummer Night (Phryne Fisher, #17) by Kerry Greenwood A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness (IL: MG+)

Option 3: Since Kaguya-hime is sent to Earth alone and keeps her sadness to herself for awhile before she tells her parents what has made her so upset, read a book with a single girl/woman on the cover. There should be no other human or human forms present on the cover. Animals are okay. Can be a cartoon version of a woman, but not a doll or a only a silhouette.
Required: Post the cover when claiming the task for completion.

[Examples]
Maplecroft (The Borden Dispatches #1) by Cherie Priest The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan This is Not a Test (This is Not a Test #1) by Courtney Summers How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran What's a Ghoul to Do? (Ghost Hunter Mystery, #1) by Victoria Laurie Captain Marvel, Vol. 1 Higher, Further, Faster, More by Kelly Sue DeConnick

Option 4: The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is a 10th century Japanese folktale and is thought to be the oldest extant Japanese prose narrative. Even though I majored in English and Bio, History was always fascinating to me--history of books/stories? Win/win. For this option, read a NON-FICTION book with the main page genre of 'History'. Any genre listing that includes "History" will work (i.e., History > World War II, Military > Military History, etc.).

Option 5: Whenever the Bamboo Cutter cut down a stalk of bamboo after finding baby Kaguya-hime, he found a small gold nugget. This was sent from the people of the Moon to him to help in the costs of raising their temporarily exiled princess. To help him count all these gold nuggets, read a book with a counting NUMBER found in the TITLE. The number can be spelled out like one, two, three or in numerical form; 1, 2, 3. Hyphenated number words, like twenty-one and thousand-dollar, will work.Ordinal numbers (First/1st) do NOT work. Once, Twice, etc. also do NOT work.

[Examples]
Ten, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, One for the Money, Bitten in Two, Movies In Fifteen Minutes: The Ten Biggest Movies Ever For People Who Can't Be Bothered, 1776, The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line

30.2 - Jonquil’s task: Takin It to the Streets
Help Thread
This is a TWO book task; you may read books from both options or repeat one option with two different books.

REQUIRED: State which option(s) you chose when you post.

1) When I was a child growing up in New York City, a trip to Chinatown was like visiting a magical place. The phone booths had pagoda tops, food was shaped like flowers, red and gold contrasted with the bland beiges and grays I saw everyday, fortune cookies were baked in basement “factories.

Read a book set in a place that you now consider, or once considered, magical. It can be a real-world or fictional place. The book may be fiction or nonfiction.
REQUIRED: Tell us why you consider this place to be magical when you post.

2) Summer was also a time for festivals to honor a neighborhood church’s patron saint. Celebrants feasted on funnel cakes; or sauteed peppers, sausage and onions; or cotton candy (or all three). Bands and singers performed until 1:00AM. People danced in the streets.

Read a book in which a group of people takes to the streets to celebrate. Examples include Holi in India, an annual neighborhood block party, Britain’s Guy Fawkes' Night, a parish fete, a founder’s day celebration, high-fiving neighbors sharing a six-year-old's first solo bike ride, kids making the first leap of the summer into the town swimming hole, etc. The size of the group, the impromptu or organized nature of the celebration, the trigger for the revelry isn't as important as your belief that you are reading about several (or many) people sharing a public moment of celebration. A book will qualify for this option even if that public moment of celebration is only mentioned once and is described in just a few sentences. The book may be fiction or nonfiction.

REQUIRED: Name or describe the celebration.

30.3 - Donna Jo's task: Going My Way?
Help Thread
I love to travel. In fact, some of my friends tease me, saying that all they have to do is stop the car, open the door, say "Do you want to ride along?" and I'll jump in and ask where we're going later. Now that I'm retired I can indulge in the love of travel a little more. This summer you can travel a little with me.

Pick two different options and read one book for each (two books total).

REQUIRED: State which options you chose when you post.

Option 1: In June I will be traveling to my old home town in Iowa. I'll be driving my sister to her class reunion (50th) and attending my own (55th). Read a book from one of the following lists: Popular Iowa Books or Books Set in Iowa. Some of these may not meet SRC guidelines, so choose wisely.
REQUIRED: State which list and on which page of the list your book can be found when you post.

Option 2: In July, my friend Mary will drive from her home in Indiana to Kansas to pick me up. Then we will travel to Colorado to pick up our friend Kathleen and go on to Santa Fe, New Mexico for most of a week at the opera. Read a book with an author whose first name is Mary, Kathleen, or Donna OR choose an author whose last name begins with the letter A, or L, or O. If using the first name, spellings must be exact. No variations allowed.

Option 3: In August, my brother, sister-in-law, her sister, and brother-in-law, and I are going on a tour of Scotland, England's Lakes District, and Ireland. In honor of the Union Jack, read a book with the title written in solid red OR white OR blue lettering. The title words should all be the same color (either red OR blue OR white). Only the title applies; subtitles, etc. may be different colors. When you post, link to book cover.
Examples: Who's Writing This? Fifty-five Writers on Humor, Courage, Self-Loathing, and the Creative Process by Daniel Halpern (red) Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (white) The Valdemar Companion by John Helfer (blue)

Option 4: When it comes down to it I'll go near or far, in a bus or a car, on a plane or a train. I'll hike or I'll bike, go by camel or horse. I just love to roam, so don't leave me at home. Read a book with one of the following words in the title/subtitle: bus, car, automobile, plane, airplane, train , hike, bike, bicycle, camel, horse. Plurals, possessives, or -ing endings are allowed, but no other variations. No compound or embedded words. Series names will NOT work.

Option 5: Read a nonfiction book about a country you would like to visit (or that you'd like to visit again). The book may be about any time period in the country's history, but it cannot be about the country you live in currently. If the book takes place in several countries, it must be at least 50% about the place you'd like to visit.
REQUIRED: When you post, state the country you live in now and the name of the country you'd like to visit.

Book 2: The Distance Between Us

Book 2: Valley of Dry Bones

30.5 - Teri-k's task: Good Old Summertime?
Help Thread
Summertime - everybody loves it, right? Actually, it's my least favorite season. I especially don't like the terribly hot temperatures and high humidity we can get here in the Southern US. But there are a few perks that enable me to survive. This task celebrates the good and bad of Southern summers.

This is a TWO book task. Please choose two different options.

REQUIRED: State which options you chose when you post.

Option 1: At it's worst, summer here means opening my front door to the kind of heat and humidity that makes the outdoors feel like an out-of-control sauna.
For this option, the title and subtitle of the book you read must contain all the letters in SAUNA, including two A's.

Option 2: Summer does have some good points. It's a great excuse for eating ice cream, for one. I also love watching the fireflies rise up in my lawn during the evening. And finally, there's baseball. I can't play, but I sure do love watching it, whether it's little kids hitting off a tee or pros smacking it out of the ball park.
For this task read a book whose cover has ice cream (popsicles or other frozen novelty desserts work, too), a firefly (1 must be lit up), or a baseball uniform, bat, ball, or mitt. (Not all of the object has to be shown, just enough to make it clear what it is. A person doesn't have to be wearing the uniform. A baseball cap alone is not considered a uniform.)

Covers that work:
Just Desserts (A Savannah Reid Mystery, #1) by G.A. McKevett Scoop to Kill (A Mystery a La Mode, #2) by Wendy Lyn Watson Catching Moondrops by Jennifer Erin Valent Firefly Lane (Firefly Lane, #1) by Kristin Hannah Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella Calico Joe by John Grisham

Covers that don't work:
The Natural by Bernard Malamud (This may have been a baseball once, but it isn't now.)

REQUIRED: Include the cover when you post.

Option 3: Finally, there's something about rising temperatures that makes me want to switch from my usual driving music and head down the highway belting out the songs I sang along to as a girl. I may not play my sound system loud enough to blast anyone, but I do turn it up over the sound of the AC and play lots of good old-fashioned, classic rock-and-roll.
This final option lets you put on some classic rock, or other music of your choice, and read a classic genre book. Because I feel a classic really should be older than I am, it must have been originally published before 1956 as well as have the genre listing "classic(s)", which can be embedded.

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11182 comments 30.6 - Sandy's task: Dancing in the Streets
Help Thread
To me, summer is all about the music, and my favorite summer memories involve lots of dancing to 60s Motown music. For this task we'll revisit some of the songs and artists of 60s Motown Music.

Read two books, one from each of the following options. **The two books must have a combined total of at least 500 pages.**

NOTE: ebooks without print versions cannot be used for tasks requiring a specific number of pages. If you read an ebook or audiobook use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.

No books with a main page genre of childrens or kids may be used for this task.

Book 1. In a 2013 Rolling Stone reader's poll, the following songs were voted the top 10 greatest Motown Songs:
10. Let's Get It On (Marvin Gaye)
9. Dancing in the Street (Martha & the Vandellas)
8. Ain't No Mountain High Enough (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell)
7. Tears of a Clown (Smokey Robinson & the Miracles)
6. Ain't Too Proud to Beg (Temptations)
5. Tracks of My Tears (Smokey Robinson & the Miracles)
4. Papa Was a Rollin' Stone (Temptations)
3. I Heard it Through the Grapevine (Marvin Gaye)
2. What's Going On (Marvin Gaye)
1. My Girl (Temptations)

Definitely some Marvin Gaye fans voting here!

Read a book, the title/subtitle of which contains a word of at least 4 letters from the title of one of these songs . Words must match exactly - no variations.

Book 2. Some of the great Motown groups/artists from the 60s were:
Four Tops Jimmy Ruffin
Marvin Gaye The Supremes
Gladys Knight The Temptations
Martha Reeves Mary Wells
Smokey Robinson Stevie Wonder

Read a book whose author has the same initials as one of these Motown artists. The author's middle initial may be disregarded.

30.7 - Pamela3265's task: Celebrating Summer
Help Thread
This task will feature some of the fun events that traditionally take place during the summer months.

This is a 2 book task. Choose 2 different options below and read a book for each option.

Option 1 June Wedding: I will be travelling to attend the wedding of one of my closest cousins. Since June is a popular month for weddings, read a book with a wedding dress/veil, wedding cake, church (or other religious building such as a mosque or synagogue), or a floral bouquet on the cover. Required: Include the cover when you post and, if it's not obvious, identify the wedding-related object.

Option 2 Family Reunion: I have several family reunions scheduled for this summer. For this option, read a book whose authors initials can be found in the word REUNION. Letters may be used as many times as they are found in REUNION. Middle initials may be ignored.

Option 3 –Vacation: I will be joining members of my extended family for a week-long vacation in the mountains. For this option, read a book set in a place you would like to go on vacation. Required: Identify where you would like to go on vacation.

Option 4 County Fair Time: My family enjoys visiting the county fair to enjoy “fair food and look at the exhibits. For this option, read a book with an object on the cover you would expect to find exhibited at a county fair such as fresh produce, farm animals, handcrafts, art, etc. Required: Include the cover when you post and, if it's not obvious, identify the county fair object.

Help Thread
In honor of recent victories highlighting the power of love in this crazy, mixed-up world of ours, read THREE books from the following options.
Graphic novels that fit the rules of the challenge ARE allowed for this task.

Book 1: Read a book with the genre GLBT as a main page genre. GLBT may appear alone or embedded.

Books 2 and 3: Read TWO books from the following options. You may choose the same option twice. The genre GLBT is NOT required for these books, although it may appear. Required: State which option(s) you chose when you post.

A) Read a book written by a GLBT author on this list: .

B) Read a biography, autobiography, or memoir about someone who is GLBT. Ex. Happy Accidents, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography

C) Read a book by the same author as one of your other two books. For example, if you read Tricks for your first book, you can read another book by Ellen Hopkins for your second book.
