Richard (mrredwood) | 123 comments The Book of the Month for December, 2009 is Hyperion , written in 1989 by Dan Simmons:
On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope—and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.
This is the first volume in the four-book series , which continues with The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion. According to the , a movie of Hyperion is in production (see ).

Bill Wellham (stereodeluxe) | 2 comments An awesome book. I will be interested to hear what everyone else thinks of Hyperion. I still have clear visual images in my head of the all the characters and scenarios. Brilliantly written.

I may well have to read it again!

Scott Danielson (sddanielson) I've read this one, too - very recently. I second the words "brilliantly written" from Bill's post.

Kiri (kirious) | 2 comments Utterly amazing work. It's been a while since I read them, but I was so completely gripped when I did. A movie could be interesting!

Brett (battlinjack) | 2 comments This is very strange. I have been thinking about rereading Hyperion for some time. Today I have been going through a ton of book groups and there are several discussions going on about Hyperion right now.
It must be a galactic conspiracy! They put the command in all of our minds to read it now! -grin-

Marko (msusimetsa) | 2 comments Finished this a couple of weeks ago and I was well and truly impressed. The "novellas" within the book were all very different, fleshing out the characters extremely well.

The only downside was that every start of a "character's story" ground the main story to a halt for a few moments before the character's story itself got to full speed and took you with it.

I liked the Poet's and the Academic's stories the best, personally.
