Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments yeah, my daughter is in FL and there is a hold on it. she works at the library and is the one who unpacks the new books and check them in so she gets first dibs on everything. she laughed when i told her she submarined me on this one

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments What's a "recall" function at a library? Sometimes I'm, like, "what the fuck? I have a book for four months and some fucker recalls it?" Then again, I've probably recalled books without knowing I have.

I call my friend Laurie and she cancels the recall when people recall books:) I'm evil, too:)

message 103: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
You don't know what a "recall" is, yet you have your friend Laurie do it for you?

message 104: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Well, let me put it this way. When I check a book out from the library, I assume I have it until the due date assigned to me. I plan for it. And then some fucker "recalls" it and I have to take the book back sooner. What the fuck?

And I don't have Laurie recall books for me. I have Laurie cancel recalls:)

message 105: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Yeah, I get pissed when people recall my books too. But I also get sick amounts of pleasure out of being able to have a book I need for class or a project right away.

And right, I meant what you said about Laurie.

message 106: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments wait...you can recall things. this matter i will have to investigate at the kokomo-howard county public library. if you ask some of the staff there about a book recall they will prob look at you and go "i don't really recall that book"

message 107: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments at our library the "recall" functions as a hold and prevents the person who has it checked out from renewing it - but the person who has it still gets their three weeks with the book.

message 108: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments ahhhh. now that makes sense

message 109: by [deleted user] (new)

That does make more sense, I have never heard of the recall function. But I wouldn't take it back early anyways, I would take it back either when it was due, or when I was done with it, which ever came first.

message 110: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments This might be a university thing, where sometimes they let you check out a book for an entire semester...

how our library handles non-compliance on their recall rules. the Recall Squad as they are known.

message 112: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Yes, that's true. I can check out books at the university for months on end. And renew them for more months. But there a recall really is a recall - they will ask me to bring the book back early. Which seems fair, since I'm getting books sometimes for 6 months.

message 113: by Ivan (new)

Ivan I'm reading "Howard's End is on the Landing" by Susan Hill - all about a year of reading books she already owns. It's quite well done. Lots of essays on what she's read (not just this year), writers and books that have inspired and informed her. I'm a sucker for books about books.

message 114: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments My next read will be In the Woods by Tana French. I'm looking forward to it.

Leslie | 777 comments When I went into the hospital on 1/4 and rehab because I had to have my knee replaced, I wanted to read, but I was all drugged up and in a lot of pain. I kept starting books and then not wanting to read them. About ten of them. Then I finally read Holy Cow, and it was really good, but I had to force myself to finish it. And now I'm reading Pope Joan and it's really good, but I'm forcing myself to finish it. My second book of the year. I don't know why I don't want to read books and finish them since the surgery. Because, the thing is, I want to want to, the desire to read a lot like always and finish books is there. It seems like it's taking my brain a long time to get back where I was in a lot of different areas. Maybe it's the pain pills, I don't know. I can feel that it's getting better, and I'm taking a lot less of them.

message 116: by Gus (new)

Gus Sanchez (gussanchez) I'm reading Colum McCann's Let the Great World Spin, which won the National Book Award for Fiction last year.

message 117: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Is it good, Gus? I like the title.

message 118: by Kallie (new)

Kallie I have built up quite a list of books to read in the months following graduation. I tend to fall behind on recreational reading since I have so much mandatory reading to do. I am in the middle of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn but I ended up putting it down halfway through when the semester began again. I already have a stack of soon-to-be read books on my desk that I am just itching to get started on.

I like that title too!

message 121: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11826 comments Today I was reading "The Implacable Order of Things." I'm really liking it, and will likely finish up tomorrow. The writing is fantastic - it really conveys to me the essence of what the characters are living and feeling.

message 122: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments just starting Malcom Gladwell's What The Dog Saw. Gladwell is my current favorite writer. incredibly smart yet down to earth books

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I like him, too, Kevin. I loved The Tipping Point, especially.

I'm about to start Going Bovine, which just won the Printz award, for best teen book of last year. Which, of course, is being hotly debated in teen librarian circles. :)

message 124: by Knarik (new)

Knarik I am finishing "The Historian", in the middel of "Brave new World", am planning to begin F. Nietzsche's "Thus spoke Zarathustra" and Saramago's "Blindness" tomorrow. AND my classes begin the day after tomorrow!

message 125: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I'm draggin' through the first Sookie Stackhouse book and want to start some Faulkner next...

I imagine debates in teen library circles get heated, eh?:)

message 126: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I started The Liar's Club last night. I read it a long time ago, now I want to read it again.

message 127: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11826 comments Finished "Implacable Order of Things" (good book!) and got back to "The Selfish Gene."

RA, I think the Sookie Stackhouse books need, very much, to be read along with some serious lit. They are so fluffy, you might float away if you don't read something substantial at the same time.

message 129: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I don't know why, seems like I can't get into anything lately. I've only finished 2 books this year. started about 20! UGH!!!

I have to admit I'm not liking this book at all. It's sooooooo poorly written. Like, Twilight and Outlander look like Paradise Lost and Macbeth next to this book kind of poorly written.

Faulkner next.

message 131: by Gus (new)

Gus Sanchez (gussanchez) I'm liking Let the Great World Spin so far. But I'm only on page 60.

Ouch! I read Outlander yeara ago I liked it until the end. I'm not a fan of glorifying spousal abuse. I read the first Sookie Stackhouse book. I loved the characters of Sookie and her grandmother but I was put off by the ending. The author tried so hard to point suspicion away from the real murderer, it just didn't feel right when it came out at the end.

I just started The House on the Borderland the other day. Not sure about it just yet.

message 134: by Rannie (new)

Rannie which Faulkner, RA?

message 135: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I hate the Outlander series with the passion of a thousand burning suns.

message 136: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Rannie, most likely As I Lay Dying.

I didn't mind Outlander or Twilight. I've got nothing against "lighter" literature...as long as it doesn't suck.

message 137: by Allan (new)

Allan | 10 comments Somehow I usually end up with 2 books current at the same time. Right now it's Winnie the Pooh and London: the Novel.

I have great intentions of reading more Faulkner, beyond AILD. The books are on the shelf, calling to me but everytime I start one I wake up when the book hits me in the face. I'm either too sleep-deprived or too much of a lightweight.

message 140: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I got a book from Amazon yesterday, so I'm reading it along with the Liar's Club--it's called Between Therapist and Client--the New Relationship. Very interesting. If I do come back in another life, I hope I'm a therapist (instead of an ant or wasp--who would then sting a therapist probably)

I'm also taking another shot at The Divine Feminine: Exploring the Feminine Face of God Around the World.

And a book called The Power of Point of View--so I can get everything possible from my book being in first person.

Kathryn (ktron) | 8 comments I usually ask my friends for suggestions because I am very indecisive myself (yet privileged enough to have friends with great taste in lit!). I would also use this site. My next read though is Ulysses so I don't think I'll have to think about my next read for a long time.

I'm reading, finally, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!!!

And it is refreshing to follow up a good book, Her Fearful Symmetry, with another good book. The worst is trying to read something lame after something so gripping and pageturning!

message 148: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Infinite Jest, still and probably forever. I don't know why I can't make myself finish this, it's not that bad, really. I keep getting side-tracked by other books--just finished No Way Down: Life and Death on K2 and am planning to read The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet when my husband is done. Meanwhile I'm reading a modern-day bodice-ripper which I'm too embarrassed to name.

message 149: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I never finished Infinite Jest either, Mary.

I saw The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, movie, so I'm not reading the book. I already know what happens.

I just started As I Lay Dying. I'm next on the library hold list for the new Anthony Bourdain, but I don't think a copy will arrive until at least early next week.
